college and HK’s out-of-this-world cuisine

January 10th, 2006

okay i think i’ve decided what i want to do in college. (though i’m still open to more dissuasion if you honestly believe i’m making a bad choice and you sincerely want to help poor ol me)

i’m gonna major in advertising.

minor in psychology.

question is, ADP Mass Comm or .. Diploma in Mass Comm? do advise and tell me all that you know about either course if you’ve already been down this road before!!!

and if you dont have any advice to dispense (bish), here are some pics of funny menus in a Hong Kong restaurant that julian sent me. sometimes i just dont get it. surely there must be SOMEONE in the business who can tell that “fuck to fry the cow river” should notttttttt be on a menu?! why dont they check with english-speaking people or relatives before printing the menus?! when customers point out that their menu is just weird, why dont they do anything about it?

or is it all just one big marketing gimmick? hmm!

I suppose there is a relation between advertising and psychology. They should compliment each other. Have you considered journalism? You could be an international correspondent for an international publication. I know of someone in that field and she says it’s a very rewarding experience getting to travel and actually getting involved with the local people, interviewing them.

    the menu is……………. *_*
f8ck to fry the cow river?!?! lol

anyway, i thought of taking major in advertising too. and there was a friend, my mum’s friend who was once a creative director in some company; singapore. he said that advertising industry is not as good as you think, unless you are real creative that you can really win the customers’ hearts.

we choose advertising because we like it; our interest. but he said. ya. its good doing what we like but dont it sounds bad when we need to do things we like when we dont want to. because normally we do it when we want to do it.

his points really hit me on my head and i changed my mind.

unless you”re doing it in oversea. malaysia’s advertising industry erm, are just like copy and play. they retake advertisement using local people by using the originals from foreign countries. people who works for advertising company works at night not like 9-5. bla bla bla..

i’m just telling you what a experienced guy told me. ;)
    dont mind me.

i think your choices suit you pretty well.. i dont know how advertising is in malaysia, but i suppose if it’s pretty much like everywhere else, your creativity and writing skills can get you pretty far. :) i’ve always been one to admire you so i’m sure you’ll do great. i don’t know the diff between ADP and diploma tho, so um.. sorry. good luck! ^_^

  • 11. Jason  |  January 11th, 2006 at 5:04 pm

hahahaha that is awesome! I’m saving those….

As for jobs, really think hard about the lifestyle you want… Sitting in front of a desk for 90% of your time isn’t great, even if you are earning a lot. Just try to study something you’re interested in, people change career several times in their life so chances are what you study might not necessarily be where you end up.

Just remember, you work to live, not live to work. :)

Hm….work to live, live to work

For me, I guess I am bending more towards live to work because i know what i am doing now (as in my work) is what I love to do in life! (0 ^ ^ 0 ) . Although a lot other external factors do distub this harmony most of the time, as long as the main objective is standing strong, nothing beats it! Look out for job that you enjoy most! Otherwise you’ll go through at least 8hrs x 5 D dreadfully!

Wens’s advise is very true as I have heard of plenty of those similar remarks. Psychology and journalism combo sounds fitting to your potential imho. I just thought that you are good in writing and psychology is a fun course for people with complex mind! Just my 2 cents.

The menu is just plain weird…not sure if i want to eat those food if those are the preparation!! lol

  • 16. pinkpau  |  January 12th, 2006 at 3:26 am

cheryl : am very torn now. every field seems to have people warning me about it :( majoring in psych i think is out of the question now, pursuing a masters or doctorate sounds like too much commitment for me. am considering journalism but kinda worried i’m not cut out for it.

  • 17. Cheryl  |  January 12th, 2006 at 3:45 am

Girl…you are worrying too much. I understand that there seems to be a lot at stake now but like what others mentioned, you can always switch if you think you can’t handle it.

Psych…yeah…to be a clinical psychologist, one needs at least a master. Agree that it’s demanding. Journalism…actually I dont have much clue …i cant think of any close buddy of mine who’s in this field.

My advice is what you heart says, if you find it too stressful, then it’s time to change but at least you tried. Sweetness comes after bitterness…

  • 18. Johann  |  January 12th, 2006 at 7:54 am

Why don’t you take them yourself when you are there with me ;)

  • 19. Passer-by  |  January 12th, 2006 at 6:37 pm

    Hello there.

I’m a mass comm student and well, in my humble opinion, ADP would certainly be a better choice.

They have more subjects (drama included), and unlike TCPJ, it ain’t located next to a dumpster!

Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

  • 20. vvens  |  January 12th, 2006 at 10:12 pm

do we need to select our major now? of a year later, because i cant decide now. either advertising or PR but not going to work as a advertiser etc etc.. hahaha..

i wanted something to do with TV and broadcasting. ;)

i thought you would like to try journalism. since you can really write. ;p just some suggestion. if you really like advertising maybe you can try it!

  • 21. pinkpau  |  January 13th, 2006 at 1:31 am

cheryl : i think i need more time to think about this .. :D]

johann : can i really come with you?! :D will u bring me to see the sights? haha its been yeeeears since i’ve been to HK

passerby : are you doing diploma? tell me more, tell me more..!!

vvens : no not yet, u select major when u go to uni! ooh then why dont u major in Broadcasting? haha go get the ASTRO scholarship ler :D

  • 22. eWe  |  January 13th, 2006 at 8:26 am

Just a warning. Advertising is a very competitive, stressful and hectic field to be in. But I definitely recommend ADP’s Mass Comm.

Just MSN me for questions, and decide which uni you want to go to if you want to come to America.

  • 23. sweeleen  |  January 13th, 2006 at 6:11 pm

i say go with ADP. their program is fun - as in their combinations of subjects are really interesting. i think it’s probably more to your liking compared to the diploma course (which is, btw, very hectic). i have many friends doing diploma in masscomm at Taylor’s and one friend doing ADP masscomm at HELP. my Taylor’s friends always say they regret doing what they’re doing and that they’d rather do ADP!

  • 24. pinkpau  |  January 14th, 2006 at 5:14 am

ewe : will hit you up on msn ..! though i never know if you’re really away/busy or if the status is meant to decieve :P

sweeleen : isnt hectic good? are your friends complaining bout the diploma course cos it’s too much work?

  • 25. eric lai  |  January 14th, 2006 at 11:18 am

hahaha…so about the menu…my cousin told me that “Gan”, means Dry in chinese. But Gan also means “fuck”… XP

  • 26. eWe  |  January 15th, 2006 at 1:55 am

Just leave a message la. I’ll always try my best to reply even though it’s an hour later. ;p

  • 27. pinkpau  |  January 16th, 2006 at 4:18 am

eric lai : hahaa yes i just heard too :P crap i’m surprised menus like this actually exist.

    ewe : okies !
