Time To Change

March 29th, 2006

everyday, i love DiGi more and more. not because of their wide coverage, or their good customer service, or their attractive rates .. but solely because of …

their ads.

OMG. i honestly do wonder which advertising firm does their shit. because seriously, some of their ads are like fucking works of genius that just leave me floored each time i see em.

have y’all seen their daily full-page print ads on page 7 of The Star? man, EVERY DAY i flip through the newspaper, i see a whole different new ad by DiGi! and good ones too. i’m just so amazed at how they keep churning out all this brilliance. ooooh and have you seen the DiGi Choice ad that plays in theatres before the movie starts? that, is hands down, my favourite ad of all time. it’s right up there with Carlton Draught’s ‘big ad’ :D

during today’s showing of American Idol, i caught DiGi’s latest ad that featured a high-jump athlete. it was so unbelievably hilarious that i just started laughing in the middle of the gym. i didnt care who was looking, i just wanted to laugh. i giggled so much that i had to stop my workout, sit down on the treadmill, and laugh my ass off with my head in my hands. it was a complete ROFL moment!!!

oh wait i just remembered another good ad campaign DiGi had. remember when there was this whole Call and SMS Plan thing that Maxis put into motion? well okay for those who dont, sometime ago Maxis launched this new Plan concept where their customers could choose to pay less for either Calls, or SMSes. so it really depends on whether you’re a call-person, or an SMS-person. many people were all for it, and as a result people started subscribing to Maxis Hotlink in throngs!

but then …. DiGi upperhanded them by kickstarting this wonderfully ingenious ad campaign that bore the slogan ‘Why Choose When You Can Have Both?’

:D

ABSOLUTE DEXTERITY. and the best part was that in the newspapers, that print ad came directly after the Maxis Hotlink ad. hahaha omg. i cant imagine how pissed off the upper echelons of Maxis must have been when that happened. all i know is that i choked on my Milo laughing when i read the newspaper that day.

so. maybe one of these days i may just switch to DiGi :D simply cos they have genius ads.

(i use Maxis btw. hehehe)

You should switch to digi, it’s damn cheap lor okay? =)

  • 2. pinkpau  |  March 29th, 2006 at 9:29 pm

eh really ah?! haha how cheap? i’m not a prepaid person though ..

  • 3. waifon  |  March 29th, 2006 at 9:58 pm

Ooohh..nice one there. I’m a DIGI fan all the way. well, mainly because most of the ppl I know use Digi and the fact that it’s basically cheaper to call them, I continue subscribing for like 4 years? The irony is, most of the time I’ll be calling and msg-in 012 and 019 numbers which doesnt really make any economic sense, but oh well.

I never really keep track of their ads and how hillarious they are but no doubt it’s one hell of a creative job done. Everytime Maxis lower down their prices for starter packs, Digi can somehow go beyond and lower just to beat Maxis’ market price. RM8.50 for a starter prepaid SIM pack and a bonus of RM25. Who in the world with such cow sense will do that but for all we know, that’s market strategy no?

‘Why Choose When You Can Have Both?’

That’s classic. Love it. So much for a payback and an “in your face” statement.

That reminds me of this bank in KL if I’m not mistaken it’s the umm..Bank of Nova Scotia at Menara Boustead. They have these 2 ferocious looking lion statues right outside their entrance like those feng shui-ed buildings and on the odd side, you’ll see it in front of most temples or chinese restaurant. It was meant to be emitting some glaring opposing aura towards the building at the other side of the road which is obviously a competitor.

That building’s owner was apparently smarter though. They installed a mirror at the highest point of the escalator right in front of that building to reflect the so called “bad aura” back towards the bank itself.

A mirror Vs. two grang lions. Dirty cheap tricks. Effective nonetheless. I guess. How hillarious:D

Typo error: Hilarious. Geez..how could I have gotten that wrong. Sheesh kebab~

    DIGI!
    ALWAYS THE SMARTER CHOICE!!!! =p=p

  • 6. lishun  |  March 29th, 2006 at 10:34 pm

their marketing team super kicks ass. i absolutely love their ads too. however, i use maxis just because most of my friends use maxis and it’s cheaper to contact them when we use the same service provider. heh. anyhoo, i’d love to see the people behind those brilliant ad campaigns.

  • 7. justakid  |  March 29th, 2006 at 11:28 pm

hehehe. im a digi subscriber! was originally a maxis fan, but then my frens were all using digi, so it made sense to switch.

    but nowwww .. i’m sms-ing more 2 maxis and celcom ppl. >

  • 8. dropper  |  March 30th, 2006 at 12:40 am

maxis will continue to rule la regardless of how smart the digi ad team is…coz, too many ppl use maxis already, n not economic to switch to digi. maybe digi too slow n not aggresive enough during the bloom of mobile tech. i’m sure u all agree.

  • 9. reallybites  |  March 30th, 2006 at 2:52 am

not using digi or maxis blek

  • 10. percy  |  March 30th, 2006 at 4:10 am

celcom not bad…450minutes plan help save lot as call is more cheaper than sms plus come with 3g services…

  • 11. Johann  |  March 30th, 2006 at 12:18 pm

I think the fact that you can analyse marketing campaigns like that mean something for your university subject/major choice :P

  • 12. Emily T  |  March 30th, 2006 at 2:29 pm

I flip through DIGI ads everyday but never notice the things that you do. Because I think I’m more drawn to Petronas-like ads, or anything Yasmin Ahmad (pure genius too!). The one time DIGI ever caught my eye was with their recent logo change (now it’s soooo plain!) and yes, that TV ad with the high jump guy. Haha.

BTW, I think you’d become a really good copywriter. Have you decided on what to major in yet? When are we gonna sit down and talk about future plans?! =D

  • 13. ss19flyover  |  March 30th, 2006 at 5:18 pm

hmmmm…..if you know who is behind run digi then u won’y be suprise of their creativity. :)

  • 14. will  |  March 30th, 2006 at 5:34 pm

Digi’s coverage sucks. It’s cheap, but sucky coverage is what you’ll get. It’s OK to admire their ads, but I wouldn’t switch because of that. Good ads won’t give you better service.

  • 15. Mellissa  |  March 30th, 2006 at 7:37 pm

Wheeeeee, I remember that Digi ad, LOL! I was using Digi at that time so I had a pretty good laugh over that :P I wonder which advertising company has the Digi account, hmm. Anyway I just dropped by to say hi, it’s been awhile since I’ve been here! Congratulations on your outstanding SPM results too!

  • 16. anisah shurfa  |  March 30th, 2006 at 7:53 pm

I DEFINITELY prefer the digi ads compared to the celcom and maxis ones. Why? Because celcom and maxis ads ALWAYS focus on stupid teenagers typically lepaking around and acting “cool” with their phones by their side. It’s so damn cliched. Their ads revolve around “what does Sara want to wear for her hot date?” or “hey! we can sing like doofusses for a cheaper price!”

    GAH!

By the way, I linked your blog on mine. Hope you don’t mind :)

  • 17. apple_green  |  March 30th, 2006 at 9:01 pm

yeah but digi dun have 3G so it sucks…and dunno when they are going to have 3G…

pinkpau…can i request sumthing? can u changed ur blog name to pink pau instead of quantly becoz i dun wanna miss ur entry..so when i see pink pau in my bookmarks i will click it…tks

  • 18. nat  |  March 30th, 2006 at 9:43 pm

YES OMG! I thought i was the only one who noticed their different “What If…” ads! Its so smart! ;O i thought of blogging about it to share it with the ones who didnt notice, well u did it already! HAHAHA.

waifon : wow i had no idea big corporate buildings took fengshui into account! haha i wonder if that stuff actually works :D

pierce : see, their copywriting efforts are working! people actually remember their slogans!

lishun : oh digi has a marketing team? haha crap i always thought big corporations hired ad firms. learn something new every day .. :D

justakid : is it really cheaper if you sms/call numbers with the same service provider? how much cheaper?

dropper : i quite agree with digi being slow, cos yes a huge number of people i know use maxis cos ‘they always have been’, but from what i hear one gets to save a lot with digi’s prepaid plans :) why do you say it’s not economical? anyhoo i think it’s great that digi knows they were lagging behind when the mobile phone revolution hit, and have formulated a brilliant campaign to catch up. i’m talking bout their tagline ‘Time to Change’. it’s sheer genius! i’ve never seen ads that are more aware than Digis.

    reallybites : hehe celcom!

percy : eh really, celcom is cheaper than digi? i always had the impression that digi has the lowest rates of all the providers

johann : that was barely an analysis..!! it was just me saying how i had to sit down and giggle like a maniac after watching their new ad .. :D

emily : eh yea i dont actually like their new logo! it’s so weird and .. odd to me. hate the font. but because they’re so genius there must be something to it. maybe they just want ppl to talk more about how ugly it is, so that they get more word-of-mouth. hahaha! and no laaaa havent decided major. i’m still trying to decide my STREAM, let alone major!

    ss19flyover : i wont? really? why?

will : for real? how bad is it?

mellissa : hello to you :D nice new blog!

anisah : hahahaha man! now that you mention it. hahahaha ’stupid teenagers typically lepaking around and acting “cool” with their phones by their side’ .. hahaha!!! and no no i dont mind at all .. !

apple green : haha you can rename your bookmarks, my dear! right click > rename

nat : yes, great ads arent they! blog about it la, would love to hear what u have to say :)
