Haagen Dazs Chocolate Fondue

April 5th, 2006

yesterday, i went for dinner with wai min and ivan. then we went for dessert.

ohh, the dessert.

we went to Haagen Dazs, thinking, okay maybe just a couple of scoops of Dulce de Leche or Strawberry Cheesecake, and maaaybe a banana split … but but but but but there just so happened to be this huge poster that screamed at us …

… CHOCOLATE FONDUE!!!!!

of course we went for it.

and omg, it was heaven.

if you’ve been to Fondue at Desa Sri Hartamas and liked it, you have no idea what good fondue is. if you went to Shangri La and tried their fondue and liked it, believe me it’s the novelty of the chocolate fountain that swayed you. if you’ve been to Chocz KLCC and tried their fondue and liked it okay you’ve got good taste but you’re also very rich.

Haagen Dazsssssss on the other hand, is just flawlessly splendid in every way.

their fondue is quality dark chocolate melted to the perfect thick consistency, not watered (or milked) down like every other damn place who claims to serve ‘fondue’, and has no interfering nutty flavour for those who dont like the aftertaste of hazelnut. just pureeee bittersweet chocolate for your dipping pleasures, with a bowlful of chopped roasted almonds for you to coat your chocolate-dipped edibles with.

let me tell you summore why their fondue is better than anything i’ve ever tasted!!! i’m just so blown away at the fact that they don’t water down their fondue to a pathetic, runny, chocolate coloured substance that i have to say once again that they dont water down their fondue. that is just amazing. cos like the only place i know of that has unwatered down fondue is Chocz cafe in KLCC, which until yesterday was my #1 of *all* time.

but ah!! here is why Haagen Dazs is better than Chocz. when one eats at Chocz, one dies of Chocolate-OD after approximately 5 bites. or lives a lifetime forever afflicted with diabetes. i mean, i LIKE rich fondue, but there is a fine line between rich and wiping your ass with 100-dollar bills. congratulations to Haagen Dazs for finding that fine line and hanging onto it very well! i didnt feel like i was drinking sugar when i ate a spoonful of their fondue. all i could taste was CHOCOLATE. undiluted and unadulterated. in other words, perfection.

the chocolate fondue is served with 16 mini-scoops of good ol Haagen Dazs ice cream. there are 4 default flavours - Coffee, Strawberry, Cookies and Creme, Macadamia Nut - so that’s 4 scoops of each flavour. if you dont like the aforementioned flavours, no worries, a little coy pleading and eyelash-batting will get you where you wanna go :D recommendations - Cookies and Creme, Strawberry Cheesecake, Tiramisu, Dulce de Leche. actually, the coffee and macadamia nut isnt bad, but you totally have to ditch their strawberry for the Strawberry Cheesecake.

and of course, they’ve got fruits too. slices of banana (FCK YEAH), green apple (WHOO!!), peaches and strawberries accompany the fondue. get this, all their fruits are sweet and fresh. even their strawberries!!! such a rarity, is that not?! i get so annoyed everytime i find stunted sour strawberries in my dessert, so coming to Haagen Dazs and finding yummy fruits was such a pleasant surprise!

what else, what else. besides ice cream and fruits on the tray, there’s also these chocolate chip cookies which taste suspiciously like Famous Amos cookies. they’re not though, but they taste so much like them so i’m not complaining!! su ann loves famous amos. even their blatant ripoffs.

besides that, they serve pieces of the famed Haagen Dazs brownie (hock chuan, HAIH) and some yummy waffle biscuit thingies. the latter tastes soOOOo good dipped in chocolate, then dipped in nuts, then dipped in chocolate again! :D~

we had a serious feast despite having heavy dinners already. and it’s so totally affordable too, rm44.90 which comes up to about RM52 after tax inclusion. the fondue set can serve about 3-4 people, so that’s about RM13-17 per person?! so freaking cheap and worth it. at Chocz you pay like triple the amount for half the eats.

wait, i forgot the best part.

the chocolate fondue is refillable.

MUAHAHA!!!!

so go try! however, only two outlets serve this - the one in Great Eastern Mall and the one in 1 Utama. reservations are completely necessary since both outlets only have limited fondue sets, and you aint gonna be the only people in the queue for their fabulous fondue .. :) the number to call is 03-4256 6893 for Great Eastern and 03-7726 2825 for 1U. you need to inform them at least 30 minutes before you get there so they can prepare the stuff, but it’s always best to call a day in advance.

oh, Haagen Dazs. i love you.

Oh Lordy..so so sinful yet temptingly delicious. I tried Chocz KLCC and I felt like dying upon eating the fourth or fifth choc. The sweet lingering taste is overwhelming and at that instant, I thought of a chocolate withdrawal for 2 months before the taste subside.
Chocolate fountain at Shangri- la is so- so. extremly awestrucked by that fountain machine cuz it looks so umm..i dont know..cute?
But the berries are tad small but i just love the marshmallows. The more you eat the more you feel like throwing up. That’s how I felt because the chocolate leaves a rather dry aftertaste. My tongue felt rough though.
Have yet to try a Fondue though. After going googoo gaga over your yummy post, Haagen Daaz here I come.Sad that they dont have it in KLCC but Great Eastern is good. Nearer to home too.
Where’s that chocolate shop in Hartamas btw? I’m there often but have yet to see such a restaurant. Damn..my comments are always so long. haha:D

Again, the US is left out. How come all the restaurant and food companies want to rebel against the US? Unlimited Gravy at KFC, 24 hr McD that delivers, peanut butter kit kats, and now…this. Well…at least I still have my coffee centered chocolates. woo.

  • 7. eWe  |  April 5th, 2006 at 10:32 am

  • 20. pinkpau  |  April 5th, 2006 at 11:43 pm

reallybites : ME LEH ME LEH

kevin : 1st reason = cos pinkpau is here in KL .. kekeke but nvm, in a year’s time i’m gonna come stay with you .. :D :D :D

artificially : I’M SORRY it’s just that they paid so well :(

waifon : actually the chocolates at Chocz are not bad, but you REALLY have to try their fondue one of these days :) it’s a bit expensive and not refillable, but still good. for the cheaper way out, buy their choc dipped banana, or strawberries or marshmallow :) those are priced quite reasonably. the Fondue restaurant at hartamas is opposite Coffee Bean at Desa Sri Hartamas. not the 7-11 block, but the other block! it’s behind Decanter

chin kian : i dont think it’s new, cos i’ve heard of this before i went to have it :)

jay : oh dont complain, you guys have White House and In N Out! and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups! and Wendy’s! and cheap Coach stuff! and and and Jimmy Choos!

ewe : no but i hear it’s very similiar to Shangri La’s .. haha i’m gonna boycott Equatorial cos they refused to supply their chocolate fountain for my prom. grr!

    ria : me tooo :(

johann : definitely!!! when will that be, darling husband?

bulat : hehe go go go

nina : we got ours really late too :( just this year. shanghai has been having them since forever. try sending in complaint letters to Haagen Dazs :D haha but i would totally exchange this fondue thingy for halo halo and turon ..

    sinta : *cracks whip* :D

lalita : almost every mall in KL has one! mid valley, klcc, 1u, sungei wang, etc

coco : go go go and take lotsa pics

gin : haha good for you..! i’m still gonna do bookings tho. damn potong stim to go there and find out they’re fully booked for the day!

    vvens : i know!!!

george : Fondue is an okok place .. not worth it tho i’d say :)

tze : GO :D very nice

emily : you live 15 mins away from 1U?! lucky thing!!!

  • 21. reallybites  |  April 6th, 2006 at 1:35 am

  • 22. waifon  |  April 6th, 2006 at 1:39 am

I just went there tonight and I saw the place. Yeah, pretty obvious it’s not at the 7-11 block cuz or else I would have noticed:D Actually went round the nooks and corners to search for it. Not today though..Souled Out was tonight’s option. Shall try Fondue on Saturday. Whee~thx for sharing the location. Chocolate makes life better no?
