KL’s Next Top Brownie

April 9th, 2006

one of my fav desserts in the whole wide world is the chocolate brownie with ice cream. and since almost every cafe and restaurant in KL serves it now, i thought i’d take it upon myself to suss out the #1 Brownie in town :D

what a mission!!! tough job, but someone’s gotta do it.

Brownie #1 : Alexis Bistro

Alexis’ reputation for good cakes can be justified by their famous Tiramisu alone, so i went to see if their Brownie was up to the standard of sharing that prestige.

Alexis serves their brownie really warm, and i love that cos it makes the brownie so delicously moist! their brownie has walnuts in it, nicely balancing out the soft cakey texture of the brownie. for chocolate lovers, this is the brownie for you, as the distinct taste of dark chocolate is definitely there. the frosting is thick and gooey, comforting to the tastebuds, though not the best in terms of presentation cos it was oozing butter oil at the sides and kinda put us off. at RM10.50, this brownie was good, but not worth the price. Alexis has way better stuff, i’m definitely sticking to their Tiramisu and Mango Cream Pie!

Brownie #2 : Secret Recipe

Cake = Secret Recipe, no?

at RM3.50, this brownie was a steal. i am kinda partial to this one because i think an important criteria for a good brownie is the frosting, and this brownie definitely had superb frosting! it’s creamy, chocolatey, and not too heavy, with a nice aftertaste of butter. yummmy.

the texture of this brownie is slightly fudgy, and that’s the bestttt texture for a brownie, ever. the best part was that instead of the conventional boring walnut, this brownie had pistachios at the base. pistachios are the bomb! this brownie is great, the only setback to it is the chocolate syrup they pour on the ice cream - it’s pretty low quality stuff. also, even though the frosting is utterly scrumptious, you cant ask for extra. however, for the super cheap price it’s going at, you’re definitely getting more than your money’s worth at Secret Recipe.

Brownie #3 : Chilis

this was actually the first place i went to, and i have to credit it for the inspiration. the reason i wanted to go on a search for KL’s best brownie was cos this one was so bad, dissatisfied me had to go find myself a better brownie.

in terms of presentation, this brownie actually looks pretty promising. but upon first bite, and even the second and the third, it doesnt deliver what you expect. the texture is harder than most brownies and almost crispy - great if you like dry brownies, but it just totally turned me off. the hot fudge was lousy and very runny, like Hersheys syrup sorta rubbish. i didnt like it one bit.

the plus side of this brownie is that it’s served with lots and lots of nuts, so if you like nuts then yeah, get this one. and the ice cream is strangely of better quality than most. overall, this brownie misleads you into thinking it’s chocolately purely from how it looks, but really it’s more sugary than anything. all i could taste was sweet, sweet, sweet and absolutely no chocolate. not worth my RM9.90.

Brownie #4 : TGIFridays

i love TGIFriday’s Brownie. everytime i go there, it is the only dessert i get cos it’s just so darn good.

their brownie comes in a stack of 3, topped with a scoop of ice cream, drizzled with hot fudge and liquid caramel, and nicely topped with chopped almonds. the brownies are cakey and very rich, i absolutely love how it feels in my mouth. the chocolate taste is most definitely there, though it’s more milk chocolate than dark chocolate. the caramel and hot fudge mixture lends a nice butterscotchy taste to the bite, and paired with the almonds, the whole thing is simply explosive. this brownie is yummy, yummy, yummy. goes for RM10.90.

Brownie #5 : Delicious by Ms Read

Delicious is a cafe extension of the Ms Read boutique, known for their scrumptious pasta and lovely desserts, especially the famous Banoffee Tart. the food here is so yummy, as are the desserts, so i was hoping that their brownie would be just as good.

it did not disappoint!

the texture of this one is very similiar to TGIFriday’s - fudgey and chewy. but the edge that it has over TGIFriday’s is that it has a slightly more homemade taste to it, almost like it was freshly baked. it was utterly fantastic! and of all the 5 brownies above, Delicious’ had the best hot fudge. it is to DIE for. so damn rich and thick, and does not solidify too quickly like most do. it is the perfect hot fudge, i kid you not.

this brownie has chopped walnuts in it, which was a good addition as the brownie might have been a tad too overpowering without them. the walnuts complimented the flavourful brownie very well. loved this one to the very end. it goes for RM 8.50.

also, major props cos their service is like THE best. the staff were so helpful and professional, yet maintaining a warm and friendly demeanour. if there was an award for best waiting staff, i’d give it to Delicious.

****************

and so, verdict :

the best brownie is a tossup between Delicious’ and TGIFriday’s.

there is no way i could pick, they were both too good :D why dont y’all go try them both and let me know which one is better?!
