Saving Face

April 26th, 2006

so it looks like Microsoft has announced that they are going to be taking a huge step forward in the direction of an anti-piracy utopia! starting today with your next Windows Update, if your copy of Windows is a pirated copy, you’re gonna be getting pop-ups screaming ‘PIRATED COPY!!!’ on your desktop from time to time, rudely reminding you of your clandestine counterfeit-supporting secrets in the most unpleasant manner possible.

local newspapers here did write-ups on the issue yesterday, and i find it very amusing how there was so much emphasis being placed on the ‘embarassment’ that corporate execs and businessmen would face if their bigshot clients were to glimpse their ‘tattooed’ desktops. upon reading that, i started laughing and thinking to myself how true that is, that we’re all such a concerned bunch of face-savers. and if anything, i’ll bet the prospect of that potential embarassment probably had all the companies dispatching their IT teams on a mad quest for Windows a la Authentique yesterday.

fear of embarassment is such a powerful tool. i know cos i utilize it sometimes when dealing with one of my brothers, who is DEATHLY afraid of anything that may cause him to seem slightly different from his peers. some of my classmates back in school were like that too, but from an academic vantage point. even the stronghold of my life (daddy) occasionally displays phobic tendencies when it comes to the idea of embarassment. a fine example would be last week when he went out and bought a spanking new HIGHLY EXPENSIVE set of golf clubs simply cos someone remarked that businessmen should always have clubs worth a month’s pay. rollseyes.

sometimes it’s funny to see adults behaving like that. heehee. maybe i should tell him that it’s an elite thing for businessmen to give their teenage daughters half of their month’s pay every month. and perhaps quote a made-up survey by Forbes. or even PRINT out said made-up survey. kakakakaa.

oh, shoot. i’m going to be late for my lunch date if i still sit here blogging. but never mind lah.

okay okay no no i have to go. it’s not nice to keep people waiting.

BUT I WANT TO CONTINUE BLOGGING ABOUT MAN’S INHERENT FEAR OF EMBARASSMENT.

cannot cannot. you must learn to be on time instead of being 2 hours fashionably late.

okay lah. cibai.

I see no point in this. It’s just stupid. A few months ago, Microsoft allowed all illegal copy to become “legal,” as in, they were going to turn the other way. So, that means, if anyone who installed windows from that point on is in deep shit. One may ask, why is Microsoft doing this, is it for the money? Fuck no! They have enough money from windows and office. The windows and office depts are making a shit load of money. If you were to get one of those new Intel Macs, you need to back a new copy of windows, no other way works. So, they are still selling out the Windows XP editions. Microsoft is hurting in the gaming and media center areas. The Xbox and Xbox 360 are money eaters. They lose a shit load. The gaming division has been in the red before we even sold a system. And with media center, if you wanted a media center type computer, most people would turn to a Apple computer or a Linux computer as they are better and Linux is open source. So, why is Microsoft doing this? The same reason why Windows 95, 98, and ME are no longer supported. With Vista’s launch around the corner, they need to create a fear, a need for a “safer and more secure” Operating System. Many geeks would scream out that OS X is safer and more secure, however because Windows, no matter how shitty the OS is, is still the choice for the normal man. Remember when I said “Fuck no!” for the money question? I take that back. They want more money, because the gaming and media center dept. blow. And Vista is prolly gonna blow too, but hey, miracles can happen right?

fear of embarassment? haha me and my friends use that on each other allllllllllllllllllll the time.

thats y i will never ever arrange a meet up between my current friends and my ex school friends (and i hope to god none of them is reading this).the latter will be having fun telling them allll the embarassing thing i did back in school and the former will be having fun teasing me and i’ll never win in the next “battle” since they will have an advantage over me!

I never update my Windows too. NEVER. Not that arsed to do so.i nstantly click [X] everytime i see that notification. And dear, who doesn’t fear of embarassment? We all have ego bigger than our asses therefore it’s acceptable that your dad actually spent that kinda moolah on his golf set. tell me abt it man. I thought I was the only one out there having a problem understanding fathers who buy stuff just for the sake of buying. Real expensive antiques, chinese embroidery framed pictures, carvings, GOLF CLUBS, and oh, bonsais too. Yeah, highly ridiculous and not acceptable prices for bonsais.

A friend of my dad who is a gemologist offered him a precious stone ring for 32K. and he did buy it eventually. And why? because businessman collects rare gem stones and for the sake of investment or passion, it’s worth all that shit. Said the gemologist. I say? Bullshit.
