Malacca

July 4th, 2006

at first i was going to make you guys guess where i went today after school hours, but then i realized that the post title would give it away. and i have no prize to offer the folks with the right guesses anyway, as y’all have probably already figured out seeing as nobody guesses each time i pose a guessing question!!! >:(

so since you wont guess, i’m just going to say it! i drove to Malacca today with julian! (okay obviously he was the one driving and not me. i think i’m not even capable of driving to the 7-11 down the street, let alone to another state). we went there for no particular reason - but just to hang out somewhere special, and because conversations in cars are precious :)

had lotsa fun if you exclude losing a bet (i bet with julian that Mahkota Parade wouldnt have cufflinks, was very wrong) and finding out that a lot of food places were closed when we arrived there around 2pm. no idea why that was, but the first place we hit was this little coffeeshop that had a huge sign saying PEANUT BUTTER BANANA SANDWICHES! and so we went to try it because there is just something about the marriage of the words ‘peanut butter’ and ‘banana’ that is so heartbreakingly beautiful!

t’was okay. i didnt really like it cos it was super salty and the bananas were bland. after that, we went to look for the famous (or as Theo puts it, MAINSTREAM!) Malaccan dish of chicken rice balls! the place Theo and my cousin recommended was - surprise surprise - closed, so we ended up at this cutesy little establishment at the end of Jonker’s Street. the place was so pretty, all red and traditional-looking, almost like a temple courtyard. good chicken rice balls too :) not excellent, but good enough.

we walked around the city streets for a bit after that - taking pictures, checking out the quaint Malaccan shops, and just having a really nice time :)

gorgeous Malaccan heritage shoplots

Malacca has really peaceful and idyllic streets, even in the middle of the city!

posing around Malacca

pretty clogs!

in the Orangutan Tshirt shop - i bought one that says ‘I Heart Chicken Rice’, julian got the ‘Play Safe - Buy Malaysian Rubber’ one

Malaccan graffiti by someone who comes from Sungai Besi in KL, hahaha (says so on the squirrel’s blue shirts)

we stopped for cendol at this cafe that sells the most yummy looking tarts in the whole wide world!!! i ended up buying home like, damn a lot of tarts. durian, blueberry, mocha, chocolate, peppermint, peach, banana and orange - they’re all in my refridgerator right now. :D i am so happy. nothing makes me happier than cutesy looking pastries! oh also had their Portuguese egg tart with the cendol - i just thought it’d be very funny to have something Portuguese in Malacca :D heeheehee.

the Christ Church area

the watchtower at the top of the AFamosa hill

had reaaaaaally good orange ice cream after that, and then a (quite bad) satay celup dinner before speeding over to Mahkota Parade to get julian’s cufflinks. my pessimism was at its peak - i kept trying to tell him there’s no way we can find cufflinks there, at 9pm no less. but we found cufflinks :( sometimes i think my pessimism is so out of line. then we had more ice cream. then we drove back and had more precious car conversation time.

and now i’m home :)

i think this whole roadtrip thing should be done more often! FUN!

Hi Su Ann! After dropping off the planet for a month, I finally have a chance to read your blog. Wah! What a busy girl. Going to college now and got in the papers for your blog! Well done you!
I don’t know if I mentioned it, but we had our holiday and came back to England and back to reality as well! Life goes on … as it always does. Anyway, take care and catch you later.

    looking for cufflinks?

those in M&S are quite nice….and also those you find in that kiosk in 1U’s new wing that sells silver stuffs…cant quite remember what’s it called. the singaporean chain stores. Raoul’s cufflinks are nice too….and to splash more dough..then it’d be those you find at the Mont Blanc, Dunhill, etc booths in those dept stores…think those are a bit too much.

  • 23. ront  |  July 5th, 2006 at 2:15 pm

heck…posted the above before i finish reading the whole thing…….only at the end of the posts read that you guys found your stuff.
