Vincenzo

July 21st, 2006

you know an Italian restaurant is good when it attracts customers who drive Lambourghinis with the license plate ‘DADI’ :P

Vincenzo is a nice Italian eatery that’s situated at the end of the One Bangsar strip of restaurants. i havn’t actually heard very much about Vincenzo prior to this, but the place looked so pretty that we just had to go check it out! arriving at 8pm, we found the place already full on both floors. there aren’t many tables in the place, plus they often hold private functions, so making prior reservations would be a wise move if you plan to eat at Vincenzo. dont be like azlan and i, okay - of the 375498756 times we go out to have dinner, we probably only make reservations like once. hehe. but we’ve learnt our lesson.

Vincenzo has quiet, understated and classy ambience with just the right amount of warmth. mellow jazz music is piped throughout the place, and there’s a little patio section for you to dine in if you want a bit of sun during lunch hours or some fresh air.

for my starter, i had … hehehe seafood soup! yes, again! cos i like lah. but the soup here wasnt very good though. it was so forgettable that i couldnt even remember whether or not i liked it, and had to ask azlan to jog my memory. he says that i didnt like it. then i remembered that i thought it was too tasteless and watered down despite having a lot of seafood stuff in it.

azlan had the caesar salad which he didnt like, cos the dressing wasnt creamy enough. i quite agree, but i guess salads arent meant to be sinful :P it was a pretty huge portion though, and the cheese was of great quality.

azlan’s venison main was up next, served on a bed of asparagus shoots and potatoes. he thought it wasnt up to standard, but i felt it was okay. the marinade could be better though. probably would not order again ..

once again, my expertise at picking the better main shines through! heehee. i had the sea bass which came with a lovely lemon butter sauce. this was soooo superbly good and quite possibly the best fish i’ve had in a while. every bite was flavourful and the fish was unbelievably fresh. very yum, i totally recommend it.

the waiter recommended the tiramisu, and despite being really sick of tiramisu, we had it anyway. we didnt think it was going to be good, since every place touts their tiramisu as their bestselling dessert even when it’s not very nice anyway … but Vincenzo’s tiramisu was actually pretty yummy! it’s served in a glass, and has very dense layers of mascarporne, which is exactly how tiramisu should be. none of that light and fluffy cheese crap!! the coffee liquer taste is strong and thick too. overall, pretty boring and nothing special, but still good. a 4/5 :)

okayyyyy this is their chocolate torte, and it is TO DIE FOR. the base is this nice crunchy biscuit pastry, the filling is the most amazing bittersweet dark chocolate, and finally, a thick blueberry confit lends the dessert a slight sweet tanginess. sooooooooooo gooooooooood. it’s like forkfuls of heaven!!! this dessert totally made up for the below par seafood soup, caesar salad and venison - and it’s the only reason i would go back to Vincenzo.

if you like creme brulee, i think theirs should be pretty good cos the table behind us were raving about it. plus it was the waiter’s first recommendation of dessert. we’re not creme brulee fans though, so we didnt get it.

i quite like the service here. very professional, very warm. well-informed, too! and the price is actually really reasonable - cheaper than most italian restaurants of this standard. it’s cheaper than Cipolla, that’s for sure.

overall, Vincenzo was just alright. it’s a very nice chillout place to just kick back and have wine with one or two friends - but i wouldnt come here for anniversary dinners or birthdays or any other special occasion. it’s just not that kinda place. it’s still a delightful place though, which is more than i can say for some of the restaurants on the One Bangsar strip. next time you go there, try Vincenzo. avoid NiNe and Montien Thai at all costs -_-

There’s a very good Italian restaurant in Danau Desa, Taman Desa too. Not sure whether you know where am I talking about or not. Lupa what’s the name of that place, but they are probably the only Italian restaurant in that area.
And I’m surprised you feels that Fasta Pasta is considered as good. Coz in Australia most people avoid going there, coz they are deemed not authentic Italian enough.

Alright, I’m going to level with you, I didn’t read this review. I know, I’m a horrible person =P However, this is what I mean! You could do a podcast on this! But hey, this is just me talking and having ideas. I do this all the time. I have 10000000000000 ideas, but they only remain ideas.

well i dunno wat’s the big hoo hah about itallianies.. their food isn’t that good but the place is well decorated. there’s one very near taylor’s business school, can’t quite recall the name but the pasta i ate was pretty good and it’s owned by an italian guy who cooks the food himself :). he got quite horrified when i wanted to put tobasco sauce on the pasta hehehe. well i just wanted some spicyness that’s all.

  • 20. turquoise  |  July 22nd, 2006 at 6:02 pm

i’ve been to scalini’s before. which happens to be ages when i was a kid so i can hardly remember ( i’m only 15 now ! ) but i hear that not many people go there anymore. it used to be the ‘in’ place. doesn’t seem to be anymore.

fasta pasta is still fab. your reviews are good that they make me hungry. lol !

  • 21. inez  |  July 22nd, 2006 at 6:10 pm

  • 22. Jay  |  July 23rd, 2006 at 7:25 am

  • 24. pinkpau  |  July 24th, 2006 at 12:59 pm

samantha : it is good! it is VERY good

spiller : dont know enough about wine to review it properly .. haha i think i need to at least know all the wines inside out before i feel that my opinion can be taken seriously :P

sam : hi sam, yes i know, i read your previous comment and replied to it! and it’s CRAZY how small the world is..! i mean we didnt even introduce ourselves! @_@ how did you find my blog?!

director : price is moderate, about rm25-30 for pasta and pizza, rm50 for steaks and fish and the like. it’s cheaper than most places of this standard tho :)

supersara : hehe cos the blogger likes her food to much for it to not play a part in her blog .. :P

director : i dont think i would advertise on my blog unless it’s really really worth it or unless it’s like food reviews and stuff

jennie : hehe thanks, glad you decided to drop a line. hey what is this pizza vs satay thing??? it sounds WAY nice!!

turqoise : true, actually i never hear anything about scalini’s .. i only knew about it cos i was taking a walk on that street and just happened to pass by the signboard.. haha

inez : i think there was something up with the day that we went to Allegro (we went the day that ms mary recommended) because everyone’s food sucked! but then when we told other adp ppl they were like huh where got allegro’s food so nice. so i think i gotta go there another day .. as for venezia, once again, i am the only oddball who thinks its not nice :P it’s too expensive for the portions they give. pizza uno used to be sooo good but not anymore..

jay : it’s good to defy expectations every once in a while :D

    kyels : haha sadist!!

  • 25. Adrian C  |  July 24th, 2006 at 10:27 pm

try Opus. you won’t regret it … friend of mine used to be the floor manageress there and I had the one of the best ‘complimentary’ dinners in my life there EVER. Highly recommended! The ambience is also exceptionally relaxing there too. Let me know when u want to drop in, I’ll make a few phonecalls for u :).

  • 26. pinkpau  |  July 25th, 2006 at 2:44 am

  • 30. turbo  |  November 17th, 2006 at 10:25 am

I did not listen to your advise for having anniversary dinner, so i went there recently. You are so right … dont celebrate your anniversary there. We had a table inside but facing the car park on the main road. All you get then is car headlights flashing straight into your face … not is definitely not romantic at all!
