Project Puasa

September 24th, 2006

and so ramadhan month is upon us once again! for one whole month beginning today, muslims worldwide will be observing the religious practice of fasting from daybreak till sundown. no food, no drink, no sex, no cigarettes, no nuthin’ in any natural orifices.

a long time ago, aira explained to me the reasons behind this muslim practice. firstly, she says, it is to seek closeness to God by relinquishing food and drink - two daily necessities that may distract you from seeking God lest you overindulge. secondly, it’s so that muslims will know for a month what it feels like to be a poor man who cannot afford to eat. this encourages charity, kindness, empathy and a general sense of fellowship in God.

damn noble. i’ve always been so impressed by that.

so! guess what i’m going to do this ramadhan month?!

i’m going to fast as well!

muahahahaha.

at first i had trouble deciding what i was going to give up. it ought to be my biggest addiction.

SO I SHOULD GIVE UP THE INTERNET.

i was very gung ho about the idea for like 2 seconds, then rationale and common sense took over and i realized that there is absolutely no way i can give up the internet for one whole month. wtf am i supposed to do??? not check my email for a month? give up busybodying at other people’s blogs? how can i not imdb a movie after watching one? how am i going to read my news? give up googling and wikipediaing? NO WAY WHERE CAN NEXT IDEA PLEASE KTHXBAI!

then it was suggested that i give up taking cabs cos i’m so reliant on them. i had to meet Yoe at Amcorp Mall today, so i decided to test out this idea by taking the LRT there. it was fun and all, but so impractical. yalar yalar so i saved like over RM30 cos i took the train instead of cabbing it back and forth, but think about it - it’s just so impossible to not take cabs! i mean it’s not like every single place i have to go to for the next month will be right next to a train station like Amcorp is! anyway blablabla to get to the point, if i give up cabs i am handicapped, end of story.

so, what else do i really love and need, that i can actually give up without totally killing myself yet will exert just the right amount of torture on me?

*lightbulb!*

… DESSERT.

and that is how i came to start Project Puasa 2006. i’m going to give up dessert (for clarity’s sake - cake, chocolate, brownies, milkshakes, biscuits, ice cream, pudding, sweets, tarts .. argh just about anything sweet) for a whole month. purpose : to instill charity and empathy in myself towards poor and destitute souls who dont/cant eat dessert. eg- diabetic patients, anorexic models, cranky old women with no sweet tooth, Martian.

sigh! it’s going to be a long, sad month. to hold me up for the next 30 days, i went to Baskin Robbins today and ate cookies&creme ice cream until i almost puked. my stupid friends think that i’m not going to be able to do this (except ivan, who believes in me. thank you ivan i love you!) and will cave after two days. HUH! i shall show you the extent of my willpowahhh!

*shifty eyes*

die lah there’s like all this chocolate on my desk and all these cookies on the dining table.

-___-

wei encourage me lah! i really wanna do this. if any of y’all meet up with me over lunch or dinner in the next month, you MUST make sure i dont touch dessert, okay? okay?????

eh seriously. you all think i can do it anot?

edit : i went to the ramadhan bazaar today and managed to ignore all the cute little green gula melaka kuihs! and all the cendol! and all the tepung pelita! and then when my neighbour gave me a kitkat i totally refused it! muahaha i rock. day 1 of Project Puasa - successful! :D

Hehe…that’s what I tell myself everytime, “I’m gonna go on this blah blah diet no carbo / fat / etc. so I’m stuffing myself with pasta and KFC now to pre-compensate (?) Then Guess what? I give up the diet in like two days and the indulgence becomes just that ;)

That being said, wish you all the best…though going through your blog, I think you’ll have trouble denying your sweet tooth!

How about giving up shopping instead? Not even the whole works, maybe just clothes…that’s more feasible yeah?

  • 3. lishun  |  September 24th, 2006 at 8:45 am

what?! and not have any gorgeous pics of chocolate oozing out of every corner of some delightfully sinful plate of sugar for a month?! how could you???

    =(

having said that…good luck su ann! i think you can make it. just be sure to treat yourself to your fave banana dessert once the 30 days end. hehe.

So, that means no birthday cake for you? That is harsh. Oh well, good luck to you.

So, anyone willing to take bets? Any takers? I’d say the odd of breaking this fast is 9-1. =P

  • 6. nick au  |  September 24th, 2006 at 10:33 am

    helluuuu,

i definitely think that you can withhold having desert. yes you can. everytime you pass by a shop or during dinner in a restaurant, just remember to resist ordering that succulent moist chocolate cake, it’s filled with chocolate goodness, ooozing out of every pores of the cake. creamy and filling chocolate-ness taste. yep try not to order that tiramisu as well, those soft, smooth, melt in your mouth texture just wouldn’t fit your monthlong fast that you’re trying to do. topped with a blanket of cocoa powder that is so bittersweet and mixed with a nice creamy tiramisu.

    yea you should resist those.

you can do it suann! I know you can. *sniggers*

    haa

I seriously think Puasa month, like some who wish to lose some fats will instead gained a whole lot of lards. It’s all abt the metabolism thingamajic. Starving for some 10 hours straight I presume will make them hungry like mad and eat a whole cow, elephant and bull, why not add an ostrich egg omelette for starters. The usual metabolism rate could not get used to the starvation mode hence slowing down to try get used to the new “diet”
When your metabolic rate slows down, you know what will happen next la kan. So, if your diet has loads of courses of dessert, perhaps slowing down on the sugar is not a bad idea after all but no starving ar pinks. later gain weight how? Nicole Richie shall be euphoric for having so many people across the globe, carrying supposedly her fats on her behalf :D I’ll be happy too if it were to be me :):):)

prawn : what do you mean not enough??? its MORE than enough!

mitchlai : hey dont do low-carbo :( it makes me sad when people follow that diet cos it’s torture! torture! how can you not have FLOUR and rice?! bread = awesome. cakes = awesome. pasta = awesome! rice = awesome! as for giving up shopping, that one’s too easy. haha odd as that sounds, it really is.

    lishun : sigh! =( 30 days!

    kevin : wei dont laaaaaa

jay : omg yea i totally forgot about birthday cake!!! noooo O_O aww you have no faith in me :(

    nick au : EVIL !!!!!!

waifon : yep you’re right about the metabolism thingy. but i guess if at buka puasa time they eat moderately, then dont snack throughout the night, then eat more in the morning before fasting starts, it should be no prob. nicole richie is disgusting!

archangel : haha im not lah!

jirwan : well said brother j

sieutheng : YA WEI i didnt actually think about birthday cake and stuff. huh :( maybe my bday can be like an exception to this puasa thing :D hehe then i ganti, like aira would.

  • 20. TheRealAnonymous  |  September 24th, 2006 at 8:27 pm

As much as I believe in you that you can do it… i think there’s bound to be a day where u unconsciously consume some kind of dessert! I mean… being so used to it and all mar… surely one day u’ll ter-take a bite of something… and then later remember “alamak.. i’m supposed to puasa!”. haha…

Coz’ being the only one doing it… i’m sure there’s a day where u’ll wake up forgetting… unless u got a BIG not that says “PUASA MONTH” right in front of you as u get out of your bed… hahaha.

My guess… u’d probably unconsciously take a bit off ur friend someday in this 30 days… tell me if i’m right by the end of the Puasa month! =)

    GOOD LUCK PINKPAU !!
