Are You The One?
November 28th, 2006

the MPH Search for Malaysian Young Writers prizegiving ceremony was today. they announced the top 3 finalists.
and noooooo i wasnt in the top 3.

dont gimme that sympathetic, oh-im-so-sorry shit. i dont wanna hear it. what i wanna hear is that the judges were blind, blind i tell you!!!
heehee. no lah i’m kidding only. with the crappy essay i came up with, i am grateful to even be a finalist. i totally dont deserve it. i’ve read a few essays written by others who werent shortlisted.. and honestly i think a lot of them deserve the finalist status more than i do.
during the event, i sat beside the soon-to-be winner, Benjamin Ong. i turned to him and asked if he was nervous, and he was like, “a little bit”. haha so cute. besides him, i spoke to like, only 3 other finalists (cos i was soooo late), and they were all damn cutesy as well. “we are the unsung heroes!” exclaimed one called Bryan, who shares my ‘low expectations, low disappointment’ philosophy. someone’s gotta lose for someone to win, eh. nevermind lah benjamin ong, we sacrifice our pride for your glory!

and Kiasu Andrew did it AGAIN. this is the 3rd time, andrew. stop upstaging me!!!!!!! i swear, this guy wins competitions even when he’s not in the same country. memang overachiever, can fight Dennis oredi. okay lah i tell you how bad it is. someone will see the ESUM Public Speaking competition sticker on my folder, and they’ll go, “oh! you took part ah! so you know andrew loh right?”
or, “you did debate in high school? then surely you know andrew loh of SMK DJ!”
or, “you wanna do AFS student exchange? i can refer you to my friend andrew loh…”
or, “really? you did the IMPAC Young Writers thing? andrew loh won, you know right?”
andrew, go away. just GO AWAY. -_______-
okay enough about andrew. i dont wanna talk about him anymore. later he ber-ego. so i’m going to talk about cake!

chocolate hazelnut cake to quell my depression of not getting in the MPH top 3! bakerzin is always a good place to drown yourself in the realization that you cant write.
and i just wanna say that i have found some semblance of meaning in my life. it’s called 9 Crimes by Damien Rice. it is the most beautiful, heartbreaking song in the world.

Remember me? I was one of the “cutesy” finalist that sat next to Bryan. :)
Btw, spot on on the ‘low expectations, low disappointment’ theory.

aiyoo… at least u’re a finalist merz. =) although u didn’t beat EVERYBODY… U still managed to beat a very very large sum of people to get to the point where u’re standing (or sitting and crying) maaaa. hehehe
I think essay writing competitions besides having to be really good… to a certain point, you have to have luck… luck that your writing style is to the liking of the judges. Umm… at least thats what I think lar… hehe.

Oh you like 9 crimes too! I was so touched by the lyrics even only from listening to it’s preview! Lisa Hannigan is amazing with Damien. This song is so painfully beautiful.
You know you got a bunch of readers who doesn’t even bother to know about the winner! Am I right??? hehe

hi hi, remember me su ann? lol, anyway, I think it didn’t come out right (or at all) during the event, but after hearing a bit from andrew, it was nice to meet you there. I’ll make sure to read your essay in the anthology, even if you won’t put it up lol :D
18. Benjamin Ong | November 30th, 2006 at 10:19 pm
Hi Su Ann, a friend of mine discovered your blog ;-P
‘formerly of ssg’ was my Music Theory classmate. Now isn’t the world a small place? (Interestingly, her sister’s name is Su Ann too; when I first saw your name on the shortlist, I wondered if there was any connection)
And yes, I was a debater and we did win the State Title. But I’ve never taken part in many debates, such as HELP, Taylor’s etc. And I’ve never tried the ESUM. I guess there are some things we’ll never know.
By the way, I took part in the IMPAC; didn’t get shortlisted then. Here’s a long-belated congrats to you!

the beginning of 9 crimes reminds me of james blunt for some reason :p but yeah, 9 is a good album anyway, and congrats on being a finalist! :)
