I Like Concerts And Awards Shows

February 26th, 2007

you folks who’re going for the Java Jazz Fest this weekend can stop making me feel all dark and twisty inside now. my itinerary for March :

3rd March Saturday – Fall Out Boy
12th March Monday – Yo La Tengo
13th March Tuesday – Jaga Jazzist and The Observatory
15th March Thursday – The Album Leaf
17th March Saturday – Rachael Yamagata

i am SO excited!!! not to mention extremely relieved i managed to get tickets for them all. the only damper to it is that i have to travel back and forth between singapore and KL after each act. why? to attend my classes. because for every class i miss, 1% gets deducted from my final grade. and i cant stand the idea of that happening. yes, i know. my defence for being the most insufferable kiasu ever is that i need to somehow make up for getting that B+ in English. i mean, who the hell gets a B+ in English???

and no, this post will not contain a ’see! all the good acts go to Singapore wan, Malaysia has nothing wan’ complaint. because i’m not like that. and because Muse just left our shores yesterday. and because once upon a time, granted it was a long time ago but still, we had Incubus on our humble soil.

i just watched an hour of the Oscars and was bored to tears. but i do think that Ellen Degeneres is an excellent host. though not sidesplittingly funny the way Chris Rock is (oh i loved the 2004 Academy Awards), she provides that comfort and that ease we all look for in a host. she was born to be onstage.

totally unlike that bumbling fool who hosted the LA Red Carpet Party for this year’s Oscars. Dominic something or other. did you guys catch him??? oh my god he said the stupidest things. my favourite : ‘we have so many models walking around tonight, oh there’s … what’sherface… Cate Blanchett!!’

and another : ‘let me just recap the nominees for Best Film tonight … um .. er.. er .. oh, look! George Lucas is waving at me. waving at ME!!!’ uh-huh, sure he is.

okay i am now going to try to forget the fact that Babel, a movie i absolutely loved, won virtually nothing at this year’s Oscars. i will do so by drowning myself in the best ever peanut cookies and pineapple tarts in the world. and you will not stop me.

    Yeah I know =(

I loved Babel too and I think they totally got shafted. Apparently word on the street (in the US at least) is that it’s a wanker’s movie – hah, trust the Americans to shy away from anything that’s not set in NY, LA or possibly, even Boston.

And yum, will you share those cookies? =)

the departed won :( it’s unfair that they didnt gave credit to the original movie, Infernal Affairs. i was rooting for Babel too.

you won’t regret Rachael Yamagata – I saw her in NYC – blew me away.

  • 14. kiasu andrew  |  February 27th, 2007 at 11:51 am

i was stark raving mad because a pitiful shadow of a great original film won best picture.

the departed was a comedy, a COMEDY, i tell you. all the characters had NO development/dilemmas except leo and the psychologist. matt damon’s character was mediocre.

jack nicholson spoilt the entire film. did you see the see-me-throw-cocaine-on-my-bed-while-i-screw-my-two-prostitutes part? wtf wei, wtf

    leo was great, though.

    i preferred babel too.

  • 15. Lynny  |  February 27th, 2007 at 1:07 pm

urghh i SO agree about that dominic guy. the STUPIDEST thing he said last night was when he was interviewing Steve Carrell, and he asked Steve’s wife, “and you are…?”

  • 16. i ling  |  February 27th, 2007 at 1:27 pm

Hey! I went to Cava and it was absolutely beautiful. Cozy and yummy! I love love the desserts, go get em’! Anyways, aren’t you going for Phantom of the Opera? If you are, I am! and we can get some Sg fooodd! Any recom?

  • 17. martian  |  February 27th, 2007 at 2:30 pm

ive lost my opinion. i like everything. every damn thing…except for showgirls which is a musical which i hate but which has got history of some famous black chick band, which i love, both the black chicks and the history.

  • 18. lishun  |  February 27th, 2007 at 4:51 pm

as long as it’ll be a great performance, i’ll go. =)

  • 19. the other zen  |  February 27th, 2007 at 7:41 pm

    HOW MUCH
    OMG

    WHERE WHERE WHERE

  • 23. pinkpau  |  February 28th, 2007 at 12:41 am

philippa : yeah i cant wait .. :D best part is the tickets are absolutely cheap!!

reallybites : check around april or may or something.. some things may be going on by then! :D

percy : im gonna pass on the city hotels, cos i’d much prefer to stay as close to the festival site as possible! so i only checked with the 2 holiday inns near the cultural village. but i was told by a kuchingite friend that most city hotels are booked out anyway! hmmmm…

alea : i think the departed had a lot of appeal to those who never watched infernal affairs. we’re let down because we know how awesome IA was. but in truth they’re both in leagues of their own .. i try to tell myself not to compare but inevitably i just do :P

kevin : sigh! at least now i know not to take 102..

hishy : bad hishy! not going to send u milo now!

sw : im very excited :D

kiasu andrew : totally agree abt leonardo dicaprio :) but i thought jack nicholson was good! did u watch dreamgirls?

lynny : hahahaha i KNOW!! such an idiot, right. haha did u see the look greg kinnear gave him?!

i ling : oooh the chocolate cake :D~ did you try their special drinks? and yes im going for phantom of the opera with the boyfriend.. he just doesnt know it yet.. hahaha! yea there’s lots of stuff to eat in sg! i’ll recompile them soon, cos im heading there 3 times this month -___-

martian : but angsty people hate everything… and stop thinking abt showgirls. it’s dreamgirls.

    lishun : okie dokie! :D

    the other zen : hehehe!

adrian : not true .. but it’s a tough fight :) i loved little miss sunshine as well.

    chris : singapore! singapore!

monkeyonkey : at singapore for SGD60 :) on the 17th of march.

  • 24. tze  |  February 28th, 2007 at 1:48 am

rachel yamagata. now i am officially jealous.

    bring me with you T.T

  • 25. Jay  |  February 28th, 2007 at 1:50 am

I just have to say, when the Departed won, they did give a shout out to IA. In fact, when it won for best adaptive screenplay, they said it was from “a Japanese movie,” which was wrong but still a decent attempt to acknowledge IA has a precursor.

  • 26. Jay  |  February 28th, 2007 at 1:51 am

‘decent attempt to acknowledge IA as* a precursor.’

  • 27. pinkpau  |  February 28th, 2007 at 2:13 am

tze : okay come we go!

jay : they said IA was a japanese movie??? ohhhh myyyy goddddd. and here was andrew lau, co-director of IA, saying how happy and proud he was that the departed did so well at the oscars. bahhhh.

  • 28. george  |  February 28th, 2007 at 5:12 am

And do go try the Singapore Fried Prawn Noodles in Food Republic (food court) next to Isetan! It’’s by Thye Hong. It’s to die for! You haven’t really been to Sg until you’ve eaten that in my opinion!

  • 31. pinkpau  |  February 28th, 2007 at 7:39 pm

    george : most definitely heehee

    gin : come lah!
