And This Is Vienna
July 29th, 2007
Vienna is beautiful - all neat sidewalks, knives and forks scratching daintily on white plates, and magnificent baroque architecture. horse-drawn carriages sail smoothly down the streets of the city, and it’s easy to close your eyes and eclipse the thrilled tourists atop the carriage with your own imageries of the perfectly-coiffed ladies of 17th century Europe, dressed magnificently and fanning themselves, while tittering girlishly behind lace gloves as they make their way towards the week’s high-so ball.
one breathes the arts in Vienna. everywhere in the city, there are vestiges of Austria’s rich history in arts and culture, and just as many signs of contemporary uptakes. the former manifest themselves in the walls of old buildings and the many historical sites of the city; the latter in the form of flyers given out by wigged men all decked out in fancy costume complete with waistcoats and breeches. i dont envy them; it was really hot in Vienna when we were there.
i regret to inform that the Martian and i didnt see as much of Vienna as we would have liked, due to tight schedules (him) and sleeping in too late (me). of all the museums and galleries in the city, we only managed to see one! foodwise, we didnt cover much either save for the meats and cheeses and coffee. no apfelstrudel or the original sachertorte :( though we did see many churches.
i took some gorgeous photos at Naschmarkt and St Stephan’s that i was really eager to share, but as y’all know, them pics are forever gone. so here are pictures of our 2 days in Vienna, all as taken by Martian. he didnt take very many pictures, but i uploaded the pics from his camera to find that most of them had me in it. haha! baby you love me wan issit. okay lah i love you too. because you gave me all of your pictures.

#1 breakfast at the hotel on the first morning. best ever cold cuts and cheeses

#2 the Karlskirche cathedral with a work of Plop Art

#3 at the steps of the cathredal. we took some really nice selftimer pics here with my camera :(

#4 inside Karlskirche

#5 i didnt like Karlskirche much as you can see from the pic :P it had all these ugly beams in there to support an elevator system. Stephansdom was breathtaking however

#6 at some museum

#7 me and Martian. hahaha no lah no lah

#8 Bach’s star

#9 we stopped at this lovely kaffeehaus outside the Operahouse while waiting for the bus

#10 at the Hofburg Palace, the cool crib of many an important man in Austrian history. er that is not me squatting on the floor in a most unladylike manner. aiyah i just wanted to take a picture from the bottom of the statue! and i did! and it came out nice. but you will never know that, won’t you! so it’s actually not me squatting on the floor in a most unladylike manner.

#11 still at Hofburg

#12 the cafe and shopping area nearby Stephansdom, with Hofburg Palace in the background

#13 at my favourite place in Vienna, the Naschmarkt. it’s a long market street housing knick knacks, clothes, fresh produce and foodstuff. ps i hate wasabi nuts, argh

#14 at Segafredo! haha of all places

#15 i really just had to do this pizza stall thing! pretty good stuff

#16 in the city. we later ran in this rain coz we were this close to missing our train to Budapest

#17 Votivkirche from afar. we never went in

#18 someone rustled behind this door and i got scared

#19 at the Sigmund Freud Museum. the girl in black on the left is actually a guy in black on the left

#20 Freud’s psychoanalyst sofa! love and work, work and love, that is all there is.

#21 outside the museum. no i dont know why my legs look like that

#22 /wistful

#23 the subway
———
that’s it, though there is so much more to Vienna that we saw. and also so much more that we didnt. anyhoo, Budapest pics up next :)
these peanut butter biscuits are most addictive.

Nice pictures of Vienna. Reminds me very much of Brussels that I went to a couple of years back. I would guess that the style of architecture is predominantly the same throughout Europe. Also London has a few passing similarities too. Look forward to the Budapest update …

Vienna’s truly awesome when comes to magnificent structural buildings like those depicted in the pictures.
Anyway, are you on a European tour or something? If that’s so, looking forward to see the other places you’re visiting.

Any idea what’s the signboard in the Hofburg Palace pic meant? I still have no clue today although my trip there was like more than a year ago.
17. gaelan | July 29th, 2007 at 8:45 pm

20. FeR | July 29th, 2007 at 10:27 pm
oh shame on the camera!
btw, don’t mind me asking (really just curious) - are all these trips around (the world! *hehe*) funded by Martian or PaMa?
i’ve to prolly save 10 years to get to ONE place for a holiday. boo!
21. Jonathan | July 29th, 2007 at 11:52 pm
The smile on your face for the first picture is dainty. Well at least not food wise, but yea, its a sweet smile, should do that more often
Vienna somehow reminds me of London, and also the place i am in now, Melbourne. The only difference could maybe just be the historical ancient buildings they have there. Oh by the way, why are you all the way at Austria now?
22. entwined | July 30th, 2007 at 12:21 am
vienna and budapest. super exotic! :D i bet budapest is really gorgeous as well. :) by the way, you traipse around the city in heels? how do you manage! tell me the secret hahah :P im always unglamourously shod in sneakers when i go vacationing. bleh.

vicnan : no navypersons here in vienna :P
rimus : it was :)
a : thank u! i wore it for World Earth Day last month coz of the colours
alan : ooh there are lots of budapest pictures :) i’d love to hit brussels one day.
eric : I WANT. where in europe u going?
kenjj : no, we just did vienna and budapest, and effectively about 2 days for each place
jess : it was a lovely trip :))))
justanothertragedy : haha but my real martian is warmer and cuter. and talks to me
bulat : yup
michael : we didnt have time :P almost missed the train to budapest
janice depp : you’re right, i didnt look at it that way! :D
sheon : all taken by the boyfriend :) yea i know, i dont know how ppl can eat wasabi let alone wasabi nuts. arhghghg
michelle : i know, right!!! :D
karyn : the museum is actually what used to be freud’s own home and office in vienna. his daughter anna wanted to keep his legacy alive, and so she donated the place and some furniture, photos, original certificates and other memorabilia and had her father’s place turned into a museum. it’s a very cool place, a lot of his stuff is in there, lots of photos of him as well as all the books he wrote, together with the works of several other relevant pyschologists.
mm : i peered worriedly down the steps to the catacombs, if that counts :P ooooh YES the sausages!!!!
mrbherng : what signboard? i dont think i saw it!
gaelan : yes vandalism but not by me :P wow a viennese honeymoon sounds really really cool
jessica k : that’s true :)
farah : HAHA i cant believe u said that! we got right off the plane at 6am viennese time, after a 10 hour flight, and had to start our first day already. so in that breakfast picture i was actually really fatigued and feeling blah
fer : ya total shame :( haha that is a very good question. as for this particular trip, martian took me.
jonathan : yea vienna actually really reminded me of melbourne, only it’s quieter in vienna. and no, i am already back in KL :)
entwined : buda and vienna are quite different, methinks! and the heels on those shoes i’m wearing in the pics arent very high :P they’re low heels and are of the comfy-yet-pretty type! there’s this shop in singapore where i buy these kinda shoes from, and they’re like my travel staple.
therealanon : wei i’m back already! :) gonna be here for a good while.
25. Jeff from LA | July 30th, 2007 at 8:11 am
Vienna looks amazing, I want to go now. Also, how did you guys communicate language wise, did you just use English? Did most people understand English relatively well?
26. eric | July 30th, 2007 at 10:29 am
hahaha let’s go france and germany! :P
27. hw | July 30th, 2007 at 2:30 pm

30. mrbherng | July 30th, 2007 at 6:45 pm
Left of picture #11, the signboard which seem to be “no holding hands in public” to me.
31. mm | July 30th, 2007 at 7:41 pm
mrbherng, i think it’s a no loitering sign . they do not want people hanging around/ lepak doing nothing outside the palace.
P, there’s a mass grave of the plague victims at the catacombs where you can see the remains of it…piles and piles of bones…it’s quite deep down.
32. madeline k. | July 31st, 2007 at 12:22 am

eric : ons lah :D
hw : it was :)
rachel : it’s this place at chinatown. either pagoda street or smith street! the shoes are in the middle of the shop, with racks of loose floaty type clothing on the side. then bags at the back of the room

36. miss susan | July 31st, 2007 at 8:57 am
i love the cactus on the breakfast table. its so random, yet so effective in evoking cuteness.
37. Jeff from LA | July 31st, 2007 at 1:45 pm
I’m going to side with Marianne. You need to get a Facebook acct! Its way better than Friendster.
38. jehutyz | July 31st, 2007 at 4:48 pm

41. mrbherng | July 31st, 2007 at 8:41 pm
I spotted that signboard personally around the city, near St. Stephanplatz too. So no loitering in the city? That will be awfully weird.
42. 4th | August 2nd, 2007 at 12:01 pm
There is no Kangaroo in Austria.
I love the musical performance in Wien. Many of the performers are Asia, truly meritocracy despite their infamous pride.
43. Jeff from LA | August 6th, 2007 at 3:59 pm
Hmm, have you tried using Mozilla Firefox (an alternative browser) to load the Facebook page? It could be a problem with Internet Explorer.
