I Heart KL
August 18th, 2007
while looking through some of my folders, i found a bunch of pictures that i’d forgotten about! i’d meant to collect at least 10 of these photos of myself and roadsigns of the roads in KL that i frequent, but i only got to 7 before i’d forgotten all about it. haha. so because i know i’m never gonna get around to photographing the other 3 roads, here are the first 7 anyway, along with my favourite and frequented places along said roads.

Jalan Bukit Bintang
Photographer : Waimin
What’s there :
- Starhill (Tiffin Bay, Jogoya and the Feast Village!!)
- a Japanese restaurant called Dontaku which used to be so good but not anymore
- Westin Hotel (Prego, Qba)
- the Marriot which has a fantastic chinese restaurant called Shang
- Sg Wang which is like a melting pot of everything
- Oggi at The Regent which is a pretty good Italian restaurant
- the huge Giordano signboard above the Mcdonalds which used to have Utt on it, and i would always stare dreamily at it while waiting at the intersection’s red lights.

Jalan Yap Kwan Seng
Photographer : Short Brother
What’s there :
- Sasso Rosso which has the best panna cotta ever
- Market Place, a nice restaurant & lounge, where i had a really good chocolate mousse
- Smokehouse which used to be my go-to for Yorkshire pudding but sadly it’s degenerated into a really crap place

Jalan Doraisamy
Photographer : Ivan
What’s there :
- Asian Heritage Row!!! i like Cynna and Bar Savanh.
- Bar Blonde for nights of gossip and conversation
- Palacio has good tapas
- and of course there is Maison (as opposed to Maisons wtf is Maisons, people) but that’s technically off the Heritage Row
- and my new workplace is here too wtf.

Jalan Ampang
Photographer : Kelvin Tan
What’s there :
- there is of course Suria KLCC, one of the top malls in KL
- La Risata, a cosy italian trattoria that serves great food
- the ‘Korean Village’ at the other end nearer to Ampang itself
- Jalan Damai is off this road, and that houses Hajime and Rahsia as well as this place called Arabic where everyone goes to shisha.
- Zoukkkk
- Great Eastern Mall is here too, and that naturally means Alexis.
-a decent Jap place called Onagi

Jalan Telawi
Photographer : Hock Chuan
What’s there : omg my favourite road of all the 7!!!!!!
- Bangsar Village 1, which has the Delicious Group’s new place called D’lish where the concept is healthy, self-service and quick takeaway. Village Grocer is here too, easily best supermarket in KL.
- Relish’s 2nd outlet. yum yum gourmet burgers
- Kuku Bar, where i get my pedicures and threading done
- Theophileus Tan’s house hahaha
- Starbucks at Telawi 3, my favourite Starbucks outlet in the whole wide world. nothing tops it.
- Bangsar Village 2 at Telawi 3, where MARMALADE is!!! Sole Lovely has some cute shoes. Kitsch has even cuter shoes and those Little Miss Something tshirts that i totally want.
- Nirwana at Telawi 3, the institution of banana leaf rice. great maggi goreng too
- Mooie at Telawi 2, one of the better boutiques in bangsar
- Strip at Telawi 5, my other pedicure place. it’s actually a nice waxing salon, but i’ve never gotten that done

Petaling Street
Photographer : Chi
What’s there : i used to think Petaling Street is such a crap place for ’shopping’ cos i hate all that fake LV wallet shit. but then while looking for stuff for this carnival i organized in high school, i poked around the other streets near Petaling St and was pleasantly surprised to find that there are a lot of interesting little places that sell the coolest stuff for quite cheap. Petaling Street also has great hokkien mee, beef noodles, apam. Terrence says there is a good porridge stall that caters to the post-clubbing and breakfast crowd, but i’ve not been.

Jalan Kiara
Photographer : Martian
What’s there :
- Plaza Mont Kiara which has a Starbucks outlet where i used to pull all-nighters at during SPM days coz it was the only Starbucks in KL that opened 24/7
- the first Marmalade cafe
- the most important Coffee Bean outlet ever
- Somo which is a nice hangout place
- and of course, Martian’s apartment :)
Other roads i wanted to include :
Jalan Pudu
- my family doctor is here! Dr Tham. hahaha.
- best curry mee
- the original wai sik kai
- Pudu’s best kept secret aka Marmite Chicken Rice at this cafe called Vinz
- best siew yoke ever but technically it’s off Jalan Pudu
Jalan P Ramlee
- Ozeki which is a damn good Japanese restaurant!!!
- Passion, one of my favourite bar lounges
Jalan Changkat Bukit Bintang
- Frangipani, best fine-dining restaurant in all of KL. sorry Lafite.
- El Cerdo, a modern european restaurant serving many porky dishes. the pork knuckle and the young blonde manager are so yummy. definitely a must-go
- Twentyone, a nice bar that just opened. i love the vibe here
- The Magnificent, a fish&chips place. even has mushy peas haha.

okay no more. KL really has some great places, eh :)

10. Aimee | August 18th, 2007 at 4:20 pm
su ann ah.
why do all your jalans concern food =P
11. Jeff from LA | August 18th, 2007 at 4:47 pm
I can answer that Aimee, its because good food rules, ;)……..
Honestly, though, Su Ann, you and I think alike. The only thing that really matters in a description of a location is whether there are good restaurants nearby.
I just wish I had some way to get to KL. Hmm, I’ll have to check out how much those round-trip tickets from LAX to KL cost.
12. hw | August 18th, 2007 at 6:40 pm
where’s jalan sultan ismail??? :P
I agree that the Telawi Starbucks is teh best. Quiet,
13. hw | August 18th, 2007 at 6:42 pm
continued… because left angle brackets screw up comments :P
…. I agree that the Telawi Starbucks is teh best. Quiet, love the warm ambient lighting… and wtfbbq the Starbucks at Plaza Mont Kiara opens 24/7?? Can’t believe I’ve been torturing myself almost daily craving for a nice warm latte / mocha frap at 4am when there’s one that opens 24/7 in KL….. ahhhh!!!!!
Prego is pretty damn awesome when it comes to Italian cuisine. The cuban/church themed interior of Qba is magnificent and unique as well.. good place for salsa.
Ton of places on the list that I haven’t tried though, Frangipani / Oggi good for?
14. tze | August 18th, 2007 at 7:55 pm

It’s weird that i have not heard of Jalan Doraisamy before. Sounds like a combination of Doraemon and Samy Vellu.
Asian Heritage Row is the place to be every night for most clubbers. I say most…
Jalan Telawi’s also my hangout area…well basically those places with super nice western food..i like…every week, Chilli’s + TGIF + Roadhouse Grill + Tony Roma’s –> Great lifestyle
Thus the abundance of weight…
Maybe you should also put in the road of your house ;)…nice..

24. doraisamy resident | August 19th, 2007 at 11:41 am
su ann, you work in sheraton imperial?
25. spiller | August 19th, 2007 at 1:04 pm
Frangipani serves italian fine dining. i’ve tried and thought it was so so. kinda overpriced.
Yes, i believe Jln Sultan Ismail worth a mention too: Shangri-La, Lot-10, ex-Atmosphere, ex-Emporium, Hard Rock, Luna Bar
Great post. Proud to be a part of KL.
Next post on PJ? Jalan BU something? hahaha
26. pinkpau | August 19th, 2007 at 7:57 pm
michelle : frangi is awesome :)
foreverjas : haha thank u thank u i do try.
sheon : frangipani is both a bar and a restaurant; the former upstairs and the latter downstairs. and i’m sure gay bars dont exclude straight folk :) yup i love ngau kee as well, it’s a frequent supper haunt for me. personally i dont really like maison that much. the crowd there’s not really my thing
karyn : haha not many! tamans maybe, but not roads
dawn : variety is the spice of life
charlie : haha probably will start a boutique review category soon. got all the pictures and info but damn malas
nis : please do!
michael : go lah go. make sure u take jalan tun tan cheng lock!!
jeremy : dont forget azlan is an ampang boy at heart
aimee : cos good food is everywhere in msia :P
jeff from la : haha probably pretty darn expensive. and no, good restaurants are really just one part of what’s good about a place :)
hw : i wanted to use that too, but the only thing worth writing abt on Jalan Sultan Ismail is Atmosphere, which is my all time favourite club. sadly it’s no longer around, so oh well :( starbucks mont kiara no longer opens 24/7 on weekends, they stopped doing that for some reason. frangipani is great french/global cuisine, and their menu always changes so that’s awesome. oggi is some pretty good italian
tze : i think it’s going to hurt like a bitch =(
foreverjas : remember you?? wtf you comment here all the time o_O actually this is ur 2nd comment in this post.
bulat : so what u waiting for :P start visiting KL :D
jimmy : haha i like it too. it’s a top. and work lah why cannot work!
jonathan : asian heritage row IS jalan doraisamy! argh how can u say roadhouse grill is a nice place. and msia tony roma’s is so bad!
justanothertrad : i was actually trying to do the poledance thing on the roadsign.. haha but tak jadi
artificially : pretty damn overpriced san benedetto!
kevin : and u only just left!
bunni3 : come home!!!!
doraisamy : nope :)
spiller : no lah it’s more french. actually i would say it’s global. ex atmosphere is the only place i love on sultan ismail!!! sigh nothing tops atmosphere. actually luna bar is alright too but that’s not on SI. TGIF also, for the jd steak. hehe! jalan BU 3/4. haha that’s the one i would use. and the TTDI main road cos got nice cendol
27. Jonathan | August 19th, 2007 at 9:24 pm
Well, i dont look at road names…sorry, i barely can show you the roads around my previous home in Msia (Cheras) to save my life.
Roadhouse grill used to be nice..used to…than they changed ownership to **coughs** coughs** some other **coughs** people…
Well, no pork ribs in Tony Roma’s Malaysia, but i do like their menu..;)
28. Michael | August 19th, 2007 at 11:19 pm
why jalan tun tan cheng lock? =.=
29. entwined | August 20th, 2007 at 12:05 am

Great memories in Ampang Street :P ( and all that time for 2 years i thought Jalan is a name, then i figured out that it means Street in Malay :P)
