The Peer Recommendation
January 4th, 2008
one college that i applied to required a peer evaluation of the applicant. i asked songjun if he would write my peer evaluation for me, to which he so nicely agreed. now that my materials and applications have been sent out, i’m finally allowed to read the essay. and i seriously think it is THE coolest letter of recommendation i could ever ask for.
over the past few weeks, i’ve been toiling away writing my personal statements, and sometimes when i’m done, i sit back and i think i did a good job capturing my personality and identity in those essays. but then songjun goes and writes this evaluation of me that just trumps everything that i’ve written about myself. i was floored when i read his essay. there were so many things in there about me that i’d never even thought about putting into my applications, and yet it condensed and packaged me up into one page more perfectly than i could ever attempt to. this essay is truly a work of someone who knows me better than i know myself.
i want to put up this essay because i’m so proud of it :) it’s the coolest thing anyone has ever written about me. thank you songjun :) i am so grateful for this.
Peer Evaluation for Su Ann Lim
If there was one person who could change so much my perspective in life, and forever impact how I’ve evolved as a person, that person would be Su Ann. When I met her, she was a 13-year-old still in the defining stages of her life, and even then the most striking thing about her was her vast maturity and inquisitive nature. For the past 6 years, we spent the 2nd and 3rd years in a relationship, sadly ending our relationship but still maintaining the close friendship we had from the time we first met. I am still her confidant in many things and she is the one person whom I feel most comfortable talking to about anything at all. Who am I? I’m 23-year-old Song Jun, Lim, currently pursuing his Master’s in International Business at the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom.
Su Ann is a girl of many contradictions. Upon being asked what she thought was the reason she was nominated for prom queen at her high school prom (which she also organized, and very successfully too), she blurted out: “It was my breasts!” Yet, it was this same girl that scripted the whole night from scratch. The same girl who never backed down from an injustice she felt was being portrayed. In a society where standing up for oneself is frowned upon, she relentlessly stands up for people who need support. When she faced discrimination from some conservative teachers in school for being outspoken, she did not succumb like the usual ‘rebellious teen’ down the path to self destruction. Instead, she sought to beat the system, excelling in her studies, always being warm and courteous, propping the school’s prestige in the national stage by winning competitions and organizing highly successful fund-raising events. What better way to thumb your nose at your naysayers than success?
Her ambition and drive, despite negative odds usually results her in great success, a girl who is even more driven to succeed with the looming threat of failure. A girl who knew when to laugh at herself, recalling a moment where she fell rather clumsily in a public place and instead of rushing off red faced, proceeded to sit where she was and laugh. A girl who is compassionate and empathic of the people around her, who’d never look down on the downtrodden, risking her self to help even the most anonymous of people. This is a girl who goes to orphanages on her own to teach English and to geriatric wards just to spend time with the elderly. She is also a girl who is fiercely protective of her family, especially her younger brothers whom she helped discipline and guide in absence of her busy parents. Yet so highly driven, ambitious, smart and opinionated, she is also the most humble person I know. My friends and family are all charmed by her warmth and bubbly attitude, and she’s never had problems communicating with anyone. She is also politically aware, always advocating the right to vote and debating political issues with me. Although we don’t agree on certain issues, her awareness at such a young age is a relief in a place where only 60% of peoples exercise their right to vote.
This girl enjoys performing arts, frequently attending the local production house. She herself acted in and produced a hilarious play in high school. She is an avid fan of independent music labels, especially within the Malaysian community. She has a sharp eye for photography and writes beautifully too. Here’s a tip if ever you wanted to bribe her, her biggest weakness is food. She has many a time reviewed restaurants on her blog, and I trust her tastes. Her love to travel and her travels has also imbued her with clarity of the world around her.
If there is one thing I would entrust her with, it would be anything, really. A task given she carries out and goes the extra mile, a precarious situation she would risk herself to help in anyway, to love, she loves with such endearment and thoughtfulness. Words on paper cannot begin to expound how much a dynamic, independent, strong yet tender, and sensitive person she is. One has to meet her and be wow-ed by her persona to fully appreciate this girl, this amazing girl who is so full of joy, character, and verve, who never forgets to stop and admire life for all it has given her.
yes, i really did say that during prom. on stage. into the microphone and in front of everybody. and didn’t realize how stupid it was until 24 hours later. SIGH. do you think american colleges will still want me after they learn of the completely BLONDE things i can say sometimes??? :(

ahaha. i did say some stupid stuff during my high school life too. but i blamed the mic instead :P
2. k0k | January 4th, 2008 at 6:03 am
I thought that that was a pretty cool thing to say though.
All of us can do with a little more blondeness in our lives anyway.
3. alvin | January 4th, 2008 at 6:09 am
oh not only will they accept you for your occasional blondie remarks, they will even usher you into one of those sorority houses. Alpha Gamma Petta, yay!
Very well written rec letter btw :)
4. WP | January 4th, 2008 at 6:33 am
Of course they’d want you! They’d probably want you because of that! ;)
5. Michelle | January 4th, 2008 at 6:34 am
24 hours later? Well, blame the blondie in our heads. We sometimes say darn stuff. LOL.
Talking about prom, I never went to prom. But I feel quite okay about it.
6. lotsofcravings | January 4th, 2008 at 8:43 am
well im sure that they want alot of dumb blondes..after all its the land of dumb blondes isnt??
very touching description..
7. alice | January 4th, 2008 at 9:18 am
That was an amazing essay. America isn’t full of dumb blondes. America isn’t the land of dumb blondes. Maybe Hollywood is. Maybe West Hollywood is. Even then, I exaggerate. (Sorry, West Hollywood. :P ) The ability to balance a blonde moment with intelligence will surely stand out because it is above the stereotype. You are not one or the other, but you’re comfortable being both (it seems). And that’s… a really great characteristic.

17. maysnow | January 4th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
WoW =) That is such a beautifully written work of art! But then I suppose no words are ever sufficient enough to decribe you eh ;)
Btw, can we really just go and visit geriatric wards in hospitals? I’ve always wanted to go to the pediatric wards hehe but my cousin working in GH isn’t aware of any such volunteering programs.
And, enjoy doing nothing! =D
18. maysnow | January 4th, 2008 at 2:14 pm

btw have u fiddled much with ur DSLR yet? i’m still deciding btwn the canon G9 and a DSLR…
20. Fu Han | January 4th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
Just a thought: aren’t we suppose to waive our rights of reading peer evaluations? Nevertheless, great recommendation.
21. nickie | January 4th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
wow. awesome essay!
can i have a friend who can write something like that for me toooo?! hmm but wait a minute. but i’m not you, so there probably isn’t so much awesome-ness to write about. blehh.
haha and i do agree with jun (above) tho.. the idea of meeting u somehow do feel a lil intimidating. but nevertheless, still would like to meet you some day. :)
22. kennysia | January 4th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Lucky you din ask me to write a peer review.
Otherwise I’ll just write “SHE IS COOL.”
23. truffle | January 4th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
as a reader who doesnt know you personally, i sincerely think one day you’ll be one of those successful icon who makes differences to the world =) in other words, a great person in making =D
24. aw | January 4th, 2008 at 6:00 pm
truffle: Or, if everything goes well, just enjoys 4 years of American college, maybe 1 summer at some cool school on either of the Coasts, eating glorious food, seeing glorious things, enjoying Universal Studios Orlando, Grand Canyon, museums and who can leave out Las Vegas, buys a cute VW Beetle convertible or even a Mustang GT convertible to drive along scenic highways with amazing cliffs to see the sunset or to totter around town getting Japanese groceries, learning to cook some kickass Mexican salsa and tacos, savoring authentic Korean sundofu and grilled pork chops in K-towns, fending off hundreds (thousands?) of fat, tall, skinny, nerdy, grunge, rich white guys with the Asian fever for cute little Oriental girls in supermarkets, lecture halls and clubs, gets a kickass internship with a consulting company, and subsequently gets a great paying job that allows her to rent a pretty bitchin pad before making a downpayment on a bitchin house by the sea where everyone rollerblades and is friendly and very cool.. AND NEVER FRICKING COMING BACK TO THIS HELLHOLE OF A COUNTRY!!!
25. sarah | January 4th, 2008 at 6:18 pm

26. entwined | January 4th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
i don’t really know you personally, but i find it really easy to believe song jun’s words. you’re one of the most genuine, humble, passionate and kind hearted persons i’ve “known” and i reached that conclusion just by reading your blog. :) and i echo truffle’s sentiments! :)
27. Waifon | January 4th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
*tears* well said, well said :) ok very busy now come back later to comment if rajin :D
28. Liz | January 4th, 2008 at 9:59 pm

Although I don’t know you in person this essay makes one want to know you so much more. This must be one of the most vivid descriptions of people i’ve ever come across. Well done to songjun and good luck to su ann :)
31. miss.cc | January 4th, 2008 at 11:30 pm
such a nice letter or recommendation! yes, it is a really cool letter. And you’re a really great person. HEHE!
Maybe next time you should hold a public conference. heheheh!! Everyone will get to know you. =)
Anyway, I think American colleges would still want to accept you. Even if you might say more than 1 blond comment. ;) They have to meet you to actually believe that someone unique as you exists. =)
Good luck Su Ann! I hope you’ll pursue your dreams and your wishes will eventually meet you as well.
32. Michael | January 4th, 2008 at 11:37 pm

36. Loke | January 5th, 2008 at 9:23 am
this may be a little off-topic, but since you have not blogged about the issue yet, i suppose you do not intend to at all. pinkpau, if you do not mind, i would love to hear your thoughts on the chua soi lek tape issue.
37. sheon | January 5th, 2008 at 10:21 am
well, since Loke brought up the issue…..
facts:
chua soi lek committed adultery, cheated on ppl that trust him, bad role model, hypocrite.
he should’ve tendered his resignation at the very very FIRST opportunity! not 2 - 3 days after….
however, i should say this, i think chua is one of the relatively better MCA politicians. he has brought some improvement to the public health service, and he has some guts. not like the other race-based political party leaders.
invasion of privacy is a despicable act. there is no question on that!
38. pinkshirtz | January 5th, 2008 at 11:01 am
no problemo on the applications. with much luck, you’ll probably end up with your best choice! X)
You compel me to be better! This years resolution is to waste as little time as possible, and spend it to be more productive!
You’re human … so am i … right?
39. Ryan | January 5th, 2008 at 11:22 am
“If there is one thing I would entrust her with, it would be anything, really. ”

Su Ann,
Its girls like you who insipre me. The girls who have the confidence to strive for success in everything.
You are a contradiction to all the stereotypes.
Your hard work will indeed pay off and my warmest wishes to your future.
42. jinz | January 5th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
haha dun worry i am sure they still want u…u are indeed a unique girl like what song jun had said in his peer evaluation..hmmm…hope u get very very extremely successful in life !!!!
43. pinkpau | January 5th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
pinksterz : hahaha how can you blame the mic?! the mic doesnt talk on your behalf !
k0k : actually that’s true; i laugh so much more when i’m being blonde :D
alvin : ooooh greek life!!
WP : wtf! haha seriously!
michelle : oooh i loved my prom :) why didnt you go for yours??
lotsofcravings : haha i sure as hell hope they dont accept me just because they want to fill their dumb blonde quota!!! =(
alice : that’s so comforting to hear :) i guess i just have to be proud of my inner blondness after all!
chm : at first there was this pause… then they all started LAUGHING… :\
aw : my class was the mathematical nerd class :P all they did was laugh!
ping : yes very sweet of him isnt it :)
ky : HAHA you and i are the same boat wan lah
chris : go away. songjun will only write for ME! and tzeching
bubbles : i’m so glad you think so too! :)
sheon : aww thank you. that’s so sweet of you to say!
reallybites : yes time for trip up north!!!!!!!
maysnow : well songjun did it very sufficiently i think! and my grandmother spent about a year in a geriatric wards. so when i went to visit her, i’d also spend time with the other old folks there, most of whom dont have anyone visiting them all year round :\ songjun has a blog yes, but it hasnt been updated in a long time
jun : amy tan and hilary clinton!!! what high praise!!!! dont simply say :P haha and no i have yet to fiddle with my dslr. i plan to start tomoro now that i’m so free!!
fuhan : i didnt sign any waiver for the peer evaluation cos there was none to sign, so i suppose it’s okay to view it after it’s been mailed out :)
nickie : i’m so NICE! it wouldnt be intimidating to meet me at all :( dont say that!
kennysia : hahaha what about the fact that i entertain you!!!!!
truffle : that is so kind of you to say :) i can only hope that what you say comes true.
aw : dont be angsty aw
sarah : i think we should be, because there is no access waiver on the form. dont worry, i’m sure you wrote your friend an excellent peer evaluation :)
entwined : thank you so much :) you are all so kind.
waifon : why never come back to comment?? =(
liz : i almost did. but then i saw the prom part and i started scolding him. hahahaha
borabora : oh i hope to never waste a single minute of my life :D thank you so much for reading my blog :)
cloudyrainbows : yes im very lucky to have such a great peer evaluation :) hopefully the college likes it too.
miss.cc : i’m having a public interview in a couple of weeks.. does that count as a conference? hahaha. thank you for your encouragement about the colleges :) i’m actually so nervous about what the outcome will be.
michael : all you have to do is ask your closest friends. i did!
tze : WHY HE THROW CUP AT YOU. I SCOLD HIM
songjun : WHY YOU THROW CUP AT TZE CHING
loke : you’re right, i dont intend to blog about it. hmm.. i think it’s very unfortunate that this scandal had to happen. i think that CSL’s personal and sex life should not be affecting malaysians in the way that it seems to have. it only goes to show how immature and excitable malaysians are when it comes to sex; the moment a sex video is out, everyone wants to see it, post it on their blogs, holler on their msn status that they have the full video. a lot of people i know are only interested in the sex part of the whole thing, not even giving a minute’s reflection to the whole situation. does a person’s decision in his sex life affect his political work? does it alter his level of intellect and conviction? yes he cheated on his wife - that is definitely wrong. but what people cant seem to differentiate here is the personal and professional aspects of a public figure. personally, i dont buy the whole role model thing. “oh you see our health minister go and screw young hot chick… what kind of minister does that! what kind of example is he setting!!” i mean seriously.. give us some credit here. which non-thinking creature would go out and have more sex just because an MP or a minister was involved in a high-profile scandal? it really doesnt make sense to me and almost sounds immature. in light of this sex scandal, call him a bad husband.. but take 5 minutes to think about whether or not he should be called a bad leader. he was actually one of the more hardworking and foresighted ministers we had. it’s a shame that we had to lose someone to such a stupid issue. more scandalous things have happened ie hishamuddin’s keris incident… why is he still in our cabinet? why is he a potential candidate to hold the premiership of our country? things like this are what baffle me. ya this is my opinion of the CSL issue. i maintain that his sex life is none of our business because it doesnt affect the way our country is run in ANY WAY at all.
pinkshirtz : omg about the first choice school, i wish that were true. very scared! well i’m glad i’ve helped in your decision to be more productive :P now you must help me back. hahaha. i have horrible time management too
ryan : you came?? hahahaha wtf wtf
sweat : yes yes pls pray for me more than i pray for your b cup boobies too :(
miss susan : we all have that kind of confidence in us :) i’m very sure you do as well.
jinz : hahaha thank you jinz!!!! :)
44. Christine | January 5th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
Wowowow….nice evaluation there from your friend.
Seems like you have a great life there! Other than the collage applications which you have been procrastinating on your previous posts (LOL!), other aspect seems perfect enough.
Just think on the bright side.
You’ve got a G-R-E-A-T life.
45. Jen | January 6th, 2008 at 12:06 am
we’ve all fallen in love with you already, all over a peer evaluation essay! you sound so nice, its scary =S
i bet the guys at the prom were probably wondering who ratted them out. haha ;)
songjun ought to be getting marriage proposals/ dozens of peer evaluation essay requests any day now. does he accept payment in cash, card or cupcakes?
46. Jen | January 6th, 2008 at 12:12 am
haiya infectious blonde moment. forgot to add a p.s.
p.s. keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you and all those college applications you sent in!
47. Fu Han | January 6th, 2008 at 12:21 am
OMG COOLIO!
48. fern | January 6th, 2008 at 3:47 am
how long did he take to write this? :D well done songjun!
49. songjun | January 6th, 2008 at 4:38 am
cash please thank you!! :D :D
AHAH
but then u all have to like.. date me first so i can get clear fair picture :P
haha
pinkpau : YES! I am so proud of you to be able to discern that husband/family/sex is his life and nothing to do with him being a politician and job. We dont go around bugging ppl about prominent business men and their mistresses and such even when like the roti jala man downstairs in the car park knows that the boss has 328572375 concubines. Shame that he resigned. It was political assasination IMO.
50. Michelle | January 6th, 2008 at 12:25 pm

51. Chen Chow | January 6th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Good Luck on your applications~! I have seen so many of you working very hard and passionately to try and get a place for an American education.
Really hope that you, as well as many other Malaysians who are striving hard to get a place would be able to do so! I know that it is not easy, but seeing the hard work, dedication of you, as well as other candidates here, make me thing that there are a lot of top talents in Malaysia!
Good Luck!
52. Porcupine | January 6th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
Whoa!
If only I had the capabilities to score an assessment like that… (T_T)
Nevertheless, this shows what an high achiever our pinkpau is!
WOOT!!!
But I gotta agree with you regarding the part where you said the reason you were nominated were because of your *ahem ahem*…
You DO have killer curves…
Rock on baby!
53. pinkpau | January 6th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
christine : yes i do :) i really should remember more often what a lucky person i am.
jen : haha songjun overpraise me only lah. he left out the parts where i hunt people down and kill them when they make me angry :P thank you for keeping your fingers and toes crossed for me! i really need the extra luck :(
fuhan : indeedy!
fern : like one or two days… hahaha
songjun : yay for once we agree on something… haha!
michelle : you chose work over prom???
chenchow : thank you chenchow :( im very scared :(
porcupine : everyone has their good side to write about! i’m sure if one of your best friends wrote your assessment it would come out as good or better than mine :) hahaha wtf i didnt MEAN IT LIKE THAT when i said that during prom =( to be honest i just wanted to get off the stage as soon as possible to tend to other things :\
54. adagio dancer | January 6th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
hey su ann, i think your blog is great ( like everyone else it seems ) and yea, i’m pretty jealous of your life. i’m a soon to be dance and journalism major in US - long story and I commute to Sg for lessons. I’m really jealous of ya coz you got such great friends !!! it makes me more appreciative of mine. but tell, how do you become a good friend ? I’m always seem to be too busy and caught up with work and performance gigs….
this is my blog by the way..was kinda sorta inspired by yours…
55. Chris | January 7th, 2008 at 6:49 am
dear songjun,
we’ve dated before what. come we go on date again. u know u want it. WHEN U COMING DOWN LONDON LA BUSY MAN!
56. sheon | January 7th, 2008 at 9:00 am
songjun, it was MOST DEFINITELY a political assassination!!!
a corrupt politician ruins the country, a racist politician ruins the country, a incompetent politican ruins a country…….an adulterous politician doesnt ruin a country….it only ruins his marriage.
however, image is everything in politics. IF CSL decided to stay on in politics, his adulterous image will surely be one of the issue that his rivals will bark on continuously….. inevitably, his political career is doomed…one way or another.
57. songjun | January 7th, 2008 at 9:29 am
sheon : lol no what, bill clinton did fine :P maybe CSL should like.. authorize a tomahawk cruise missile strike in the border of thailand on insurgent camps too like ole bill did ;) and now his wife is running for president lol!
CSL if he smart enough and had enough political power, he could actually beat it but i think he just didnt bother or didnt have enough clout within the system.
Plus being in a ‘muslim’ or ‘conservative’ society doesnt help at all :P
58. Michelle | January 7th, 2008 at 9:43 am
Yeah, work over prom.
59. sheon | January 7th, 2008 at 10:33 am
man…that clinton is a classic! respect!! hahah…….
CSL’s rise to power is relatively fast…..i think he still doesnt have quite a stronghold and power as the other senior figures. a solid nudge…and he’s outta the political radar…….
60. TheRealAnonymous | January 7th, 2008 at 11:05 am
Wow… damn power. Dun play play…. LoL. So how many times u kena bribed by food lah? hahaha…
61. TheRealAnonymous | January 7th, 2008 at 11:05 am
Oh… and… HAPPY NEW YEAR! =)
62. Kevin Chan | January 7th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
Wow. That is one awesome letter. AWESOME.
Your prom queen comment makes you sound like the perfect candidate to any states college now!
Colleges in the states need to fulfill their bimbo quota too, don’t they? (:
63. Cher Wee | January 8th, 2008 at 9:53 am
Nice evaluation. I think you are a cool, sensible gal
64. Waifon | January 8th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
eh eh here i am again haha! see when i say i’ll be back, i will really be back wan bluff u no money please. errr everyone said everything already!! Well, if I were to be a man, I would have plotted an assasination to wipe Julian out of the picture so thatan abduct you and bring u to a faraway land wtf then i can hv u for myself! but err since i came with tits in this life then i guess nvm lah. *muka putus asa cos dah terserah pada takdir wtf*
65. ria | January 8th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
Best of luck on your college apps! I’m glad that you finally got through them. Now go out and have fun dear :D love the essay. Props to Songjun for being to squeeze all that wonderful tidbits about you in a couple of paragraphs. Now all you have to do is sit and wait when the colleges come knocking on your door.

I’ve been a really silent reader of your blog but this particular post brought me out from my shell. T’was beautiful and actually brought tears to my eyes. You are lucky to have a friend who thinks highly of you..and an ex boyfriend at that! You must be one amazing girl!
