Come On, Young Malaysians

March 2nd, 2008

there are a few things about the upcoming elections that have been weighing on my mind lately. quite disturbing things, actually. i’m glad to finally have the time to sit down and blog about them. so here goes.

1. Indifferent Young Malaysians
i recently read a blog post about the elections, centered around the racist politics of BN. many of the responding comments on this post were along the lines of, ‘we can’t change things, so migrate only lah!’, and ’sigh politics sucks. i don’t want to get involved’, and these were coming from teenagers my age or younger. the most unsettling comment was from a young girl who said ‘i hate this controversy and i’m glad i’m too young to vote’.

comments like that one disturb me. what kind of education are we putting our young people through if they can say things like they’re glad to not be able to vote? i remember one particular comment in this post i wrote, also by a young girl, who pretty much said that i shouldn’t have written that post because the world is already so full of anger. so… what does that mean? if injustices happen, we’re supposed to ignore them in the name of harmony? i am reminded of all the paragraphs in my Sejarah and Moral textbooks where rakyat bukan Melayu tidak harus menyoalkan hak istimewa kaum Melayu supaya tidak menimbulkan perasaan tidak selesa antara kaum. (non-Malays should not question the special rights of Malays in order to maintain harmony between races)

i am reminded of how our Sejarah teachers make us memorize this tripe and never once tell us that we shouldn’t subscribe to this sort of doctrine if we want to progress as a people and a nation. i am reminded of how before each exam, i’d be cramming sentences like these into my head, and then writing them out in essays during the exam, always accepting such statements, only caring about whether i’ll get 10/10 for the essay, never really thinking about the meaning behind what i’m writing. that’s the problem with us young Malaysians. we never think. either because we’re lazy, or we’re trained from the start to think that speaking up for what’s right, and ‘controversy’ (hah), is bad and will contribute to bloody events like … jengjengjeng … May 13. please lah okay. read up on the history of May 13 and decide for yourself what it means, before you allow your Sejarah textbook to tell you what to think.

don’t be afraid just because MPs like BN’s Chew Mei Fun can say ridiculous things like - May 13 will happen again if BN is given insufficient representation. how dare she hold people at ransom like that. how dare she. people of PJ Utara, i urge you to remember the audacity of her threat when you are casting your vote on the 8th of March.

and how can young malaysians say that they are glad not to vote. this is completely beyond me and i am so disappointed in my fellow young malaysians. why are we being yes-men, and playing into the hands of this regime who are out to exploit the hell out of us?

you know what else is completely beyond me? i hate how people complain and complain and complain about the government and status quo, but then when you ask them if they’re registered to vote, they say no they’re not. why? lazy lah… one vote doesnt matter lah… no time lah… BN will win anyway lah… want to boycott electoral system lah… i give up on local politics lah.. and many more other incredulous statements. aiyo don’t be like that lah okay. the word hypocrite comes to mind. if you want change, be part of the change. don’t sit around and be an empty vessel full of hot air.

2. Khairy Jamaluddin vs Chegubard in Rembau
someone i know wrote a blogpost about how she’d vote for BN’s Khairy Jamaluddin over PKR’s Badrul H Shaharin (aka Chegubard) any day. she’s apparently part of Khairy’s campaign trail over in Rembau (where he’s contesting for the parliamentary seat), and her post was about her first hand account of how hardworking and articulate and smart Khairy is compared to Chegubard. and that Chegubard’s team played dirty like tearing down posters etc. for these reasons, she said she would vote for Khairy and that she has lost respect for PKR.

this is beyond shocking okay. things like tearing down posters and smear campaigns are so common during elections, but if dirty pool is supposed to be the tipping point in a person’s voting decision, then i daresay BN plays harder and dirtier than the opposition ever has. they practically control the entire elections machinery, and that is the BIGGEST form of dirty pool one can point out. remember Ijok, Machap? phantom voters? 100+ year old voters and 8 year old voters on the electoral roll? people finding out after some checking that they’ve supposedly voted in different constituencies? amendment of constitution to ensure the corrupt EC chairman retains his position? reckless gerrymandering (dividing voting districts unfairly) to ensure BN victories?

all these and more handicap the opposition parties. they cant even voice out their messages through mainstream media because all the broadcasting stations and newspapers are BN-controlled. and now BN is encroaching on the internet as well, taking out expensive ads on MSN and Yahoo. and with the tagline Vote for Malaysia? are you KIDDING me ah? what an insult to our intelligence.

yet in light of all this unfairness, PKR is condemned for tearing down a bunch of posters and the Rembau Menanti Anda campaign. no, it’s not the cleanest thing to do, but it’s fighting fire with fire and the only way to gain some traction in this BN-controlled system.

and so what if Khairy is hardworking articulate blablabla. EVERYONE is hardworking during elections. everyone gives false promises, empty rhetoric… Khairy’s father-in-law aka our Prime Minister Pak Lah is a fine example. combating corruption was his manifesto in 2004, but what improvement do you see so far? how ironic that we now find out that the Anti Corruption Agency is perhaps the most corrupt body in our government. and now 4 years later, Pak Lah says he needs more time to carry out this promise. what is that but a flimsy packaging for ‘I failed, but please give me your votes once again’?

Khairy is no angel lah. yes yes articulate… yes yes Oxford graduate.. but that means shit if you are a blatant racist and a nepotist. remember how he played to the UMNO gallery by saying that ‘UMNO must be strong otherwise the Malaysian Chinese will take advantage’? what the hell is ‘taking advantage’?!?! he later goes on to give examples of how this means that the Chinese will assert demands to benefit the Chinese community if UMNO is weak. hello? do you really want to vote in this character who believes that the Chinese community should not be given benefits and cannot even VOICE these demands? do you really want to vote into parliament this conniving racist who thinks that only Malays and UMNO have the right to be happy in this country? do you really want to vote in someone who thinks that a community asking for fairness is ‘taking advantage’ of a supposedly more ’superior’ race?

let’s not forget that infamous ECM Libra Ave incident where Khairy was SO PROUD to say that he would sell his shares worth RM 10 million ONLY to a Malay-owned company. racist racist racist and such obvious fanning of Malay semangat. so what if you are well-read and eloquent? you’re still greedy, corrupt and perpetuating the biggest problem Malaysia faces. the rest of Malaysia does not buy your empty election-time rhetoric. OF COURSE Khairy is going to be hardworking… getting into Parliament is just another step to take over the premiership reigns from dear ol FIL. this election is a boat that he cannot afford to miss. so it’s hardly impressive that he’s staying out till late at night to berceramah to the people.

i would NEVER ever vote for Khairy if he stood in my constituency. even if he’s a nice and sweet individual or whatever, i would never vote for someone who subscribed to the policies of UMNO Youth. yes, in Malaysia it is so unavoidable to vote along party lines. it is the only way to cleanse the system. so, one state assemblyman or MP may be more experienced or kinder looking than the other .. but at the end of the day he is still a part of a corrupt and insecure regime; a corrupt and insecure regime that you are putting into Cabinet and Parliament with your vote. what is MCA but castrated. what is MIC but helpless.

and what is UMNO? by the words of Chief Minister of Melaka - UMNO is unsinkable and even God cannot sink it. LOL. this is the party you are voting in if you vote Khairy into Parliament. i once saw the book titled - Khairy Jamaluddin, Bakal PM?. god forbid, ok? are our BN representatives so pathetic that people are enamored the moment they see a candidate who can speak good english and is articulate? articulate and hardworking people are a dime a dozen lah… but they are all studying and working abroad because MALAYSIA DROVE THEM AWAY.

——————-

only these 2 issues for now. i’ve got another 3 more to go but have no time, sigh :( meanwhile, would love to hear any comments that you guys have on these two issues.

8th of march 8th of march 8th of march. i’m really, really, really excited.

I totally agree with what you said! When i first saw the BN tv campaign, I was so insulted. Vote for Malaysia! Then vote for BN! Come on lah, how blatant are you right? If it was only the tagline Vote for Malaysia, then great.

Can't wait can't wait too. I'm so excited it's all i talked, argued, discussed and annoyed my dad about!

I'm not sure what's the age group definition for 'young Malaysians' but I consider myself a young working adult. It's really sad some of my friends don't even bother registering themselves to vote. They give reasons such as "doesn't make a difference if I vote or not, BN still win", or "might as well let them run the business since they've been at it for so long". I think there's too much apathy among Malaysians, they think migrating is the easy way out but they don't know what they are losing out eventually.

Kudos for this post and I hope more people will be inspired to cast their votes this coming 8 March. Anyway, it's for our future.

BN even have the audacity to threaten Malaysian non-malays by saying that we have to bear the consequence for not voting BN.Anyway, people who are discontented and understand the current situation in Malaysia are mosty studying overseas and not enough information are given to us on how to vote by postal means. The BN government is only interested in getting postal votes from the pro-government army personnel. Many of us have no qualms about voting for the opposition party like DAP but like what you said, many of us have given up hope on the current system. If you observe the way they draw up the constituencies, there is almost no chance at all for the opposition to deny them a 2/3 majority.States like Sabah and Sarawak has ridiculously high number of seats, but urban places where anti-establishment sentiments are high like K.L and Selangor has limited number of seats.I would try my best to vote for a change but unfortunately my voting constituent has only candidates from PAS and UMNO,which is a drawback for me to vote.

Listening to his speeches on Youtube, Khairy is really scary guy. A provocative Ultra in the making :(

Yes I'm totally agree with you! Hehe, did you saw that comment on x's blog? I'm so angry and disappointed when I saw such an ignorant comment. I want to vote but I can't because I'm still underage :(

This is the attitude of Malaysian. Is so disappointing. Well, if KJ win I won't be surprise because of so many dirty tricks that BN can use. Besides, KJ need to ensure he, himself have a sit in politics in order to get involve so I think he will do every "necessary" action to win. If, he become the future PM I think we the other race won't have any chance to survive any more. He is the one been racist.

And, actually every time when UMNO is having there AGM we the other race should also pay our attention in their meeting. Because, a lot of things that been said in UMNO will be a law in the country. As for MCA and MIC's AGM you can just forget about it. Is useless. Talk cock only. Can't even stand up when chinese and indian are been "rape"! When, person from UMNO said racist things against chinese and indian they just keep quiet. But when someone not form the party, like maybe opposition? They will condemn that very person. Like How disappointing they are. Or Our government is been fair loh. All this bullshit! Just so sick of them.

First of all, a well written post and it is so nice to see you writing on the Malaysia political scene again. This is the second time i leave a comment on your blog and the first being the entry you made on the Bersih rally.

I am 20 this year and currently studying in the UK and that have me missed out on the 'election fever' happening back home. I cant agree more on the first point that you have made.

I remember the Sarawak State Election in 2006 in which, SUPP the component party of BN, said that only BN can bring about development for the state. What was actually saddening is that most of my college friends took the bait(or threat); I cant recount how many times I had been told to look at the current state of Kelantan and asked me to reconsider my support for the opposition parties lest i want Sarawak to be less developed than the other states in Malaysia.

And without fail, all the election goodies are given when the polling date is nearer. Allocation of funds to chinese schools, community groups and so on and so forth. It happened in 2006 and I am 110% certain that it is happening right now.

It is just sad to see how shallow some voters are at times.

I don't know how relevant my comments are to the points that you have made but I hope you don't mind me voicing my opinions out through your blog.

8th of March - Vote with your conscience.

sigh i totally get what u mean in the 1st issue. i'm living with ppl like tat under the same roof!
just today i debated with my older sis abt this issue, asking her why didnt she register to vote bla bla bla. she gave exactly the same excuses u mentioned - "one vote from me doesn't make any difference la" and "my frens all also haven't register so why the rush" and "even if I did register I dunno who to vote for so no point" etc etc etc!!!!
    I'm so angry ok.
these are the people that complain and complain why our government is so shitty but yet doesn't do anything about it.

omg you are so right!! i cannot agree more! I'm only 17 so I can't vote yet and this is really making me angry.

what really bugs me is how OBCESSED BN is with reputation. they don't care about the people at all! what has pak lah done in the past few years? hmm let's see, spend taxpayer's money on sending a male model to space so he could share nasi lemak and teh tarik! woohoo! such an accomplishment! they seem to think so. but i've read articles from newspapers overseas and they're LAUGHING at us.

meanwhile our country is in serious shit. so many people need financial help and they're just throwing all that money away.

and look at how much money they're spending on their campaign! is that fair?! SO MANY BLOODY BILLBOARDS!! they cost at least 45,000 EACH! and those tv ads! the oppositions campaigns pale in comparison simply because they don't get to use taxpayers money for all these.

and the kelantan thing is really unfair. i've seen what it's like there 'cause it's my mother's hometown. it's most definately not PAS's fault. the government isn't dividing the country's funds equally so how could PAS develop the area if they don't have the money to do so? BN did this all so that the people of kelantan would see how little PAS is doing and vote for them instead.

it's so obvious how little they care about the people....so why are we still voting for them?

Great post there mate... We must put an end to this defeatist mindset. If you have a problem, deal with it. You're just going to be haunted by this guilt if you don't vote.

About Khairy, oh please, he's just a flower on the outside, but a weed in the inside. That's like Myanmanr current junta leader. Indiscriminate spilling of blood, but a gentle touch for diplomats. That's successful politicians' forte. Are we suppose to give in to that in this day and age where every vote will embed Malaysia forever in her fate?

Well, answer. Wake up people, the blacks' rights were a foregone reality when Martin Luther King took their cause to the urban streets. But it ain't stopping them.

Democracy and freedom is like a feeble flame, it's bright and it gives light to pitch darkness. You must keep putting in firewoods to keep it burning, you must constantly protect it from the cold threatening wind. The moment you stop putting the fuel, the moment you get easy with it, it's gone. Back into that chilly solitude you will.

Can you ever get back light? Yes you can, but it aint easy.

Malaysia is severely lacking in patriotism, the natural response are that "i can't make a difference", or "Migrate as there isn't a future here", or they are oblivious to everything around. Our fundamental problem lies in our education system. Indeed, Asia's education policies are to breed conformist citizens, one that will be an obedient consumer to the economy. Even working class drones.

It isn't right that Malaysia doesn't have a strong enough filibuster. It also isn't right that political parties are by race advocates, it should be united.

This coming election is really cutting close to the impending decline of Malaysia's economy in the globalised world, one that is close to peak oil.

Our next election would be 2012, and that may indeed be too late for change. We owe this change to our children, and with a worsening economy: having children is an even greater challenge. This calls for extreme measures to change things.

I'm a libertarian, and I will quote Voltaire to Malaysians that don't speak up: "I may disagree with what you say, but I will fight to the death your right to say it".

    yeah,

what's most frustrating is that BN is trying to create a general atmosphere trying to tell the nation that they are the only ones who could run the country. I wonder if those who were "forced" to vote would vote for BN since it's the most publicized.

it's really unfair how things work (on the campaign) because only BN can put theirs up any time anywhere wheres there's this time limit for the other parties.

the campaigns in T.S newspaper sometimes anger me as well because I feel the public media isn't willing to take the risk to campaign for other parties just in case BN finally wins (again!) and would find a reason to ban their activities in the future.

have you been to Anwar's public talk?

It was a real interesting one no matter it being a political gimmick. It sure did speak the mind of us Malaysian Chinese's.

"Orang Melayu semua takut Orang Cina menang"

i was pretty damn pissed too seeing that ad on tv.

    vote for malaysia. all right.

    vote for BN. WTH?

    clearly this is propaganda.

then there's the newspaper article writings on how BN has sucessfully grown from the past and how the WRITER IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ANY PARTIES WHATSOEVER, then going on to praise BN blah blah blah.

i am sick of this bullshit, but unfortuately, i am too young to vote.

    sigh.

then there's the young malaysians su ann mentioned. too indifferent and lazy. which is one of the key factors why BN manages to win election after election.

1 thing's for sure, i'm not gonna vote for a party that talks on empty promises and can't pronouce election(erection, Pak Lah) properly either.

way to go pinkpau, if only every young malaysian had your kind of mindset! i remember when i was 15 i couldnt wait until i turn 21 so i could register to vote. i am totally appalled by the fact that most of my same aged friends (and i am 27 this year) have not even registered to vote yet. thats 6 years of procrastination - if they even make it to register in the first place.

sigh. i hate to imagine wht will become of our country if everyone esp the younger generation thinks and acts this way.

'and how can young malaysians say that they are glad not to vote'

so true. which is why every year i tell my parents their vote wont matter anyway before I go to the polling station to vote.

Will be voting in Segambut just after my work. I finished work at 8 am on Saturday, after that I'll go home and sleep.
