Back In Hong Kong!
March 4th, 2008
last week, Martian and i went back to Hong Kong together :) when Martian told me he’d be heading back there for work again, i was so excited and totally jumped at the chance to go!! it’s been almost 8 months since Martian left HK, and i really really miss it so much. the last time he was back in HK, he went without me :( so bad. throw cha siew bao at him :(
we were there for about 4 days, effectively 3 since i flew out early on the last day, so we didn’t get to do very much. no Kowloon this time, unfortunately! BUT i did get to spend a lot of time walking around Causeway Bay and Central / Mid Levels on my own whilst the boyfriend did his working thing… and i took many pictures :)
so i’d like to share this little slice of Hong Kong with you all :) also gonna give you a bit of story to the things i used to see in this city that was almost like my second home last year.

#1 the crowd at Causeway Bay. i spent a whole day poking around the bowels of Causeway Bay this trip, something i never got to do much. loads of little boutiques and eateries tucked away in each street! the best tau foo far in the world can be found at Causeway Bay :)

#2 Mister Softee ice cream! Martian and i went to a carnival some time last year, and i was making a lot of noise cos i wanted to eat Mister Softee ice cream, but Martian say not nice T___T i didn’t believe him, so i begged and begged until he went with me to buy a cone. turns out that the ice cream really does suck T_____T i hate how he is right all the time.

#3 a girl buying pearl milk tea and kai tan zhai (egg balls) which are these yummy doughy bally things that you find sold on streets all over HK.

#4 VITASOY!!!!!!!! <3 how i have missed you!!!

#5 this is Times Square. never really liked it much :\

#6 this dessert place is everywhere in HK! half the menu has some form of mango in it. very nice stuff, but not the best. the best is Honeymoon Dessert in Central :) eh baby we forgot to go back there!!! durian vanilla cream :(

#7 AND THEN THERE WAS THIS HUGE CORN COB walking around Causeway Bay giving out flyers. hahahahahaha it looked so funny that i couldnt stop laughing when i saw it. flyers are quite popular in HK (promoters thrust them at your chest every 5 steps you take) so a lot of the time you see very eye-catching promoters on the streets. like this corn cob :P

#8 curry fishballs :) popular HK street food. next to this stall is a steamboat stall, where people crowd around and dip skewered stuff into soup and sauces. exactly like our lok lok! yum.

#9 i later saw that the corn cob was joined by a steak. hahahaha it was a girl steak cos it had eyelashes and lipstick.

#10 shopping with Martian :D because as usual, he didnt bring any clothes for work so we had to go buy some. sheesh.

#11 this is Martian’s friend Eugene. his picture is here because i told him i’d put it on my blog. hahaha he’s so funny. very interested in Malaysian blogs. no i’m not telling you whose blog he reads T_____T make me emo only

#12 i went to Mid Levels just to take this picture of Martian’s apartment :) i just had to. sigh. so many sweet memories.

#13 the DVD rental shop on Robinson Road, where we used to walk down to (it’s really near the apartment) to rent movies. there was one time we rented Season 2 of Grey’s Anatomy and watched a few episodes together <3 i love my boyfriend <3 even if he fell asleep midway through the 2nd episode.

#14 this is The Phoenix, just off the Mid Levels escalator. it used to have a sign saying ‘we are the last bar on the mid levels escalator’ and EVERY SINGLE TIME we go past it, Martian will say, “baby let me show you the last bar on the mid levels escalator”. -_____- EVERY SINGLE TIME.

#15 Chicken On The Run is this deli from which Martian used to tapau his dinner like, all the time. and we used to buy fruits from the stall on the right. when we were fighting one time and i stormed out to cool off, i went to this stall and bought a… pear back for him as a peace offering. hahahaha damn stupid right, i know.

#16 AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

#17 Martian never went back to Chicken On The Run (Ayam Larian wtf) after he discovered Eat Right. it’s this super healthy organic place that counts your calories for you. and because he subscribed to one of the plans at Eat Right, for the longest time Martian had to have ALL HIS MEALS from Eat Right. breakfast, lunch, dinner from Mondays to Fridays. zomg can die i tell you. luckily when i visited on weekends, we didn’t have to go there. Eat Right is too healthy for me :P

#18 Hollywood Road, where you can find lots of antique shops, art galleries and lots of interesting knick knacks.

#19 it’s a common sight to see people sleeping in random places in HK. i actually have a small collection of pictures of these sleeping people :P maybe one day i will put them up.

#20 Pottinger Street, a little street in Central where you can find all sorts of costumes and party wear. this is where i bought my angel wings for RM30! :D

#21 an old tailor on Pottinger Street. so many quaint little businesses like these in HK. such an amazing culture :) remember how our Pudu used to be like that?

#22 a small ribbon stall, where i bought LOTS AND LOTS of cheap but gorgeous ribbon for my crafts the first few times i came to HK

#23 view of the Bank of China and some other buildings from a little park near Pacific Place. sigh i only wish i took more skyline pictures this time around.

#24 a small part of the hip and happening Lan Kwai Fong, but my FAVOURITE part because Ben & Jerry’s is here!!!

#25 on my last night, i just had to go back and take a picture with the corn cob. hahaha. you see! he did a peace sign too!
———-
sigh i really have missed Hong Kong so much. it is such a vibrant, bustling and quirky city; i absolutely love it. am already pining for it even though i just came home a few days ago. ah. Hong Kong will always be Martian’s and my city :)

And it was so cold how can you wear only a trenchcoat out with what, short pants? ok la i think i saw leggings. My mum was there last week bt I don’t even bother to go with her cos it’s coooolllldddddddd :( So weird we would have met in the streets if i went hahahaha then we can pose with the corn cob tgether. And the girl steak too. And and the sleeping man.

15. Nicholas Chhan | March 4th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
ROFL! I died laughing at the corn cob and steak :D You had to go back to the cob 3 times :D and in the end took a picture with him!

20. ally | March 4th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
this is going to be a super odd question
but.
is there any reason martian would have been on a flight from kl to melbourne???
21. skyler | March 4th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
Haha I CAN ONLY GUESS whose blog he reads.
Ai ya very easy to guess one la you are so predictable. Why didn’t you bring anything non-perishable for me back ah I anger.
I am going home now bye byeeee -this cut short your comment.
22. lu | March 4th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
heyy!
just a very silent reader.
btw, u stay in martian’s apartment or hotel for that 4 nights, just wondering! which hotel do u suggest for cheap and good over there? :)
23. thegeekinpink | March 4th, 2008 at 6:33 pm
ngaiti i am too jealous for words. and to think i was just earlier looking forward to go back to miri to see my boyfriend! haha but you get to go hongkong why lah this bf cannot live somewhere more exotic…
24. tiff | March 4th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
omg Ben and Jerry’s!!! ahh. the only place/picture I could recognize (I’d been there) among the rest.
I love your blog btw!
25. entwined | March 4th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
I LOVE HONG KONG!!!!! there’s nothing about that place that makes me hate it…(okay, except for the damn cold winter earlier this yr. super cold! colder than melbourne’s winter wtf and melbourne is down south!)
damn. your pictures are making me nostalgic! my aunt used to stay on hollywood street, so i recognise the loooongest escalator in the world (probably) and now she moved to dragon terrace, which is 10 mins walk from causeway bay :P ah i love vitasoy malt soya milk! the park across pacific place is so gorgeous!
where’s the world’s nicest tau foo far? when i go back there again, i must visit it, although my aunt would probably have moved elsewhere by then -___-. and damn, i missed out on ben and jerrys this time around. damn far to go all the way there just for ice cream hahaha.
oh btw, you and martian should go cycling at the dam near tai po market (mtr station). there’s this little stall under a tree along the cycling track that sells uber yummy corned beef sandwiches. perfect with warm vitasoy after a cycling session! the weather when i was there last month wasn’t so good though, very hazy and cloudy and full of pollution and VERY COLDDDD. :(
okay too long a comment. sorry overexcited a bit *shy*
26. Jayne | March 4th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
Haha. It’s nice to see someone so excited about Hong Kong. After living here for like 14 years, bored already >

30. Michael | March 4th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
aiya no nid find taufoo far la. Just go for the shanghai style “chi fan” glutinous rice + soya bean drink at Causeway bay. Super nice can die ok? Did that almost everytime i went to cwb.
p.s: i also want to know where is the world best taufo far in cwb is. enlighten me su ann.
31. Jayne | March 4th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
T.T my comment got cut off
anyway, I was going to say since you go to Causeway Bay so much, you could just go to World Trade Center behind Sogo :P they have a Honeymoon Dessert place there heh, so you don’t have to go all the way to Central
32. CeNt | March 4th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
I have been at the exactly same curry fishball stall…
Beside got a auntie sell “gai dan zai” right?

hui wen : HAHAHA NOW THAT YOU MENTION IT
nicholas : yes i just had to! too funny for words!
grace : thank u thank u :)
ee may : ahhh stress. good food is everywhere actually. walk around these places - causeway bay, wan chai, soho/central, TST and you’ll find lots and lots of great places to eat. once you have HK dimsum, msia wan cannot compare :) especially the char siew bao. and you must find dan dan meen and try as well. and eat all the streetfood in kowloon and CWB! definitely take a walk around the islands if you can; i went to Lantau and it was really cool to just walk around the village. disneyland is quite boring, but worth a visit just for that one time. i really liked all the markets in kowloon side like the ladies market and all that. lots of quirky stuff for sale. and fortune tellers :D okay very long oredi this comment
alea : why is he cool !!!!!!! :( I’M ALSO COOL :( :(
wenqi : no no the party is not important… but but but errr very difficult to go to penang and back within 2 days :(

skyler : skyler yee sing foong you are also predictable /hmph yer i bring you back doughnuts also you complain :( hate you :(
lu : we stayed at a hotel :) his apartment there is no longer his. im afraid i cant help you with the cheap hotels :( i’ve never stayed in a HK hotel. but try looking up hotels on the kowloon side :) cheaper than HK island.
thegeekinpink : what is ngaiti ! eh pls lah miri is more exotic than hongkong ok!! and… i’ve never been to miri =( /ashamed
tiff : yes ben and jerry’s is the besttttttesetstsetestt. :D
entwined : I ALSO VERY EXCITED omogmgomgogmomg your cycling idea sounds amazing and that yummy corned beef sandwiches too!!! ahhhh!!! ^_______^ i wanna go back to hk now!!!!!! eh your aunt so cool she stayed at hollywood rd! as for the tau foo far, i regret to inform i donno where it is :( but martian knows cos he took me there! i’ll ask him to leave a comment here soon

michellesy : haha yesss all the nostalgia and good memories *swoon
ront : i dunno :( martian took me there wan. i ask him to leave a comment for you ok?
charlie : he went bananas!
michael : EH where is this chi fan thing! please tell me! :D
jayne : actually central is closer to where martian lived! the apartment was at mid levels, so we’d just walk down to central to have the dessert or i’d meet him for lunch cos he works on queens rd. sigh <3 i love hong kong
cent : YES YES hahaha same stall. hong kong is totally my kind of city :) perfect blend of new and old.
martian : okay :) but you still owe me ben and jerrys. i want the brownie flavour!
chee : haha dont tell me you went to ocean park and disneyland. theres so much more to HK than those two places!!
36. ront | March 5th, 2008 at 1:27 am

52. CeNt | March 5th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
New and old huh?!
But the government is destructing it…
Because there is limited land to live and they are destructing the old building…
Means, HK is going to be like Shanghai in few years…
*sigh*
53. skyler | March 5th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
Pinkpau why you hate me =( I loveee you =(

57. martian | March 5th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
hi everybody, pinkpau told me to tell you this. the tau foo far place is near the market. if you are at time square walk towards the right (of the the entrance) cross the road beneath the overhead bridge and you will see a row of shops that faces the bridge. go towards the left and you will find the taufoo far shop. you will see someone panfrying taufoo at the entrance. and you’ll know that the taufoo is never too far away.
58. Michael | March 5th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
go and check it out soon. thx~
59. HK | March 5th, 2008 at 11:40 pm

62. pinkpau | March 6th, 2008 at 6:21 am
chee : YES dont join tour. i’ve been to HK on tour before.. oh my god the BOREDOM. they bring you to stupid places like the convention center and tourist trap markets T___T
michelle : hello darling :D haha it’s ok, i have krispy kreme quite often actually. thank you for your kind offer nevertheless! but you know what i’ve been craving for 3 years… lygon st gelato :)

michael : okok next time i go to HK you will take me around kowloon. ok?? :D
missycheerio : oh yes all the time :D :D char siew baoooooo~
cent : i sure hope not :( my boyf tells me they’re getting stricter with hygiene regulations and that’s causing a lot of street markets to turn plasticky and dai pai dongs to close down :(
skyler : i dowan!!!! waffle and your boss will be bad to me.
vvens : hahaha like that also can entice you?! wait till i take pics of REAL hongkong food that doesnt walk around giving out flyers!!!
foreverjas : I WOULD LOVE TO….. :(
martian : thank you baby :)
HK : please lah malaysian food and hongkong food are in two different leagues of their own!!! eh that day i had really really good fish & chips + mash + mushy peas at this place in hk. the owner told me it’s not even quite close to the best in the UK. SIGH!!! uk, wait for me!!
ront : i have no idea also… all i remember is that is faces the bridge like he says. though i woulda walked to the right instead of to the left :\ but dont listen to me!
simon seow : I WAS THERE DURING CHRISTMAS 06 TOO!!! :D
63. Butterflocks | March 6th, 2008 at 11:39 am
