The Nuffnang Pajama Party

it has always been my aspiration to organize an event where i can actually take time to eat the food served, actually take photos and actually mingle with people, but i believe this will never really happen :P i swore to myself i would chill out during the Pajama Party but i obviously didn’t, because i was running around so much that i didn’t get to try the food (except for a .. something? a spring roll? that wenqi gave me. sniff i love you wenqi) nor take a single photo with my camera.

BUT I HAD SO MUCH FUN.

AND SO DID EVERYBODY BECAUSE IT’S ALL OVER THE BLOGS.

and so i am very happy :)

and thank god for official photographers because we got some pretty good pictures over here, courtesy of the one and only Kid Chan. i dont feel so bad now for not having any photos!

#10 that’s Daniel (who came in zombie makeup?!) on the right and Keng Jin on the left. this was during the I Need Something game, and the ’something’ was a pair of slippers belonging to somebody, haha! i think both Daniel and Keng Jin grabbed one slipper each and got to stage on the same time.. so the emcee made them break the tie by doing push-ups with a Nuffie on top. HAHA so clever!!! Daniel won. eh Daniel don’t need to be lawyer already lah.. you can be a gym instructor!

#11 this is Liang, our awesome emcee conducting the Couple Wristband game. Liang is seriously the best emcee ever. EVER. he’s very good with improvising, fluent and comfortable with working the crowd, energetic, pleasant and very likeable. so if you need an emcee for your event, you know where to holler :) his website is over here. and i chose this picture because he looks damn funny in here hahaha

#14 each Dreamgirl would strike a pose, and an audience member had to strike the same pose to win RM200 worth of Wella products. to the winners who have yet to collect their Wella prizes, please leave a comment here and we will get back to you!

#15 birthday cake from Mindshare <3

#16 the bosses surprised me by giving me a teddy bear and a framed card onstage :( sniff. i was so terharu!!! thank you, guys :) seeing everyone having fun that night was thanks enough for me. but this doesn’t mean you can take back the card and bear!! even though Firdauz wrote that stupid message on it :P it says- “you’re not cool, you’re overrated. and nobody likes you, except for us here at Nuffnang.” hahahaha Firdy that is the same message you put on my birthday card. why are you so unoriginal!

#17 this is Desmond The Client from Mindshare holding up the Macbook for the most number of Chipster packs in the ‘I Sleep Better With Chipster’ posts. the prize went to Jonathan of Penangite.net. you can check out his CRAZY post here

#18 David Lian won the Nintendo Wii prize for Quirkiest post, when i believe he was only aiming for the Best Pajamas prize. seriously, check out that outfit made from Chipster packets, okay!!! haha congrats David; you deserved it! i think you also earned yourself the nickname Chipster Man for the night. people probably thought you were a mascot that Chipster sent :P David’s post is here.

#19 Valerie won the iPod touch for the Best Pajamas post! how could she not win this prize; she actually handmade that top herself, along with two other Chipster pillows that were making their rounds at the party. so creative! click here to check out her post

#20 hehehe then us Nuffnangers surprised the bosses with a pair of undies that Estee made! the undies both read, ‘My Staff are blogging THIS!’. damn right we are :P

#21 then we made them put on the undies hahahaha

#22 and this is me being Central Bank and pumping liquidity back into the market for the Lumix Bidding Game after people started running out of money. you know why everyone ran out of money ah!! cos this KYSPEAKS kept winning everybody’s money!!!!!

#23 you see you see! he got so much money that he won the auction for the Panasonic camera. thank you Panasonic for sponsoring the prizes :)

#24 and this dude Roshann won the auction for a kiss from Dawn Yang, Miss Clapbangkiss herself. DAMN LUCKY. I ALSO WANT DAWN YANG TO KISS ME.

#25 this is one of the many teddy bears we bought to decorate the place. guests got to take them home after the party :)

#26 me and one of the white cushions also bought to decorate the venue. guests ALSO got to take the cushions home! sigh we are so generous. picture taken by Simon

aiyo i got a funny story to tell you all about the cushions and the teddy bears. did you folks notice the two old ladies at our party? i don’t know who they are because they weren’t wearing our event wristbands, and neither our malaysia or singapore team recognized them. anyway they went around stuffing our teddy bears and cushions into their handbags. i was very appalled when one of them grabbed a cushion from me as i was arranging them around the venue, insisting that she wanted a cushion, while the other one kept bugging me to give her one of our prizes because we supposedly ‘forgot’ to give her a prize. wtf. she was so rude that i just ignored her. and then she went to bug Stewie instead -______-

geez. i’m very angry because those bears and cushions cost us a lot of money, yet they went around just stuffing our decor items into their bags and then leaving the place. steal our stuff already then want to demand for prizes. wtf. why dont these people know how to behave in public.

and then there were some bloggers who gatecrashed. not even Nuffnangers to begin with, nor invited by any of our guests. very muka tak malu lor.

haih okay back to happy pictures. these were either sent to me, tagged via Facebook or shamelessly stolen by me from blogs :P

#27 Kevin and i. ahhh we go way back, to the days of discussing whether or not the media has a negative impact on society :P

#28 the people who made this party possible - the Nuffnang staff (plus Kenny wtf why are you in our picture!!!) after the event. whee! not everyone is in the picture tho.

#29 Kelz and i. all our pictures always turn out so nice wan!

#30 me and sexy Linora (nice new hair babe!) and Shin Chan the kehlehfeh

#31 me and Li Yin who was wearing damn nice pajamas, picture courtesy (meaning stolen from :P) of Hau Yon, one of the youngest bloggers we had at our party!

#32 with the supercute Povege!

#33 doing THE POUT with Hui Wen! she is the coolest :D

#34 with fellow BRAT Lisan who apparently didn’t realize we had free drinks and booze the whole night :P

#35 Mustard Queen and i! her headband matches our official Pajama Party design :D

#36 Thomas, who is like, very tall. and he wanted a Tall Blogger Award??!?! hahaha wtf?!

#37 this is Cindyluv! picture stolen without permission from her blog hehehe

okay no more pictures. if anyone took any photos with me (and i know you are out there!!!) that night, pleasepleaseplease do send me the pictures, ok? or put them up on your blog and i will come steal :P

well, it was really, really awesome organizing the Nuffnang Pajama Party, and i hope you all had a great time :) thank you all for being so cool and dressing up in pajamas, and for all that contagious excitement :) thank you for being such a great bunch of bloggers and party animals, who made this party the success that it was.

MWAH! <3 see you all next year!

How To Save A Turtle

i once did something crazy.

i washed and scrubbed an entire tank full of terrapins.

and i also helped wash and clean all the terrapins that stayed in there.

i’m not talking about a little plastic tank with a pair of little itty-bitty terrapins you bought from the pet shop. i’m talking about a 100 or so monster-sized adult terrapins that are twice the size of my head. and i’m talking about a HUMONGOUS AQUARIUM made of cement and stone that is bigger than my living room… a humongous aquarium filled with murky green water, the floor and walls of which were covered with a yucky sludge of rotting vegetables, mud, terrapin shit and some other unrecognizable sediments. No words can properly describe the stench and filth of that tank!!!

a picture of the very tank we washed, found here

see how gross that tank is!!

about 15 of us rolled up our sleeves and walked barefoot through that sludge to clean the tank. we hosed the tank down and removed that muck stuck to the floors with our bare hands and rakes, and we picked up each flailing monster terrapin and gave their shells a good scrub. then we scrubbed the floors with brushes and water, making sure everything was squeaky clean before we left the place.

why? So that the terrapins in the Bota Kanan River Terrapin Conservation & Breeding Center (run by PERHILITAN) would be happy in a cleaner home :)

the river terrapin is an endangered species – only 25 female terrapins were found to have laid eggs on the banks of Sungai Perak last year, compared to the tens of thousands that used to swarm the riverbanks back in the early 1900’s. this Conservation Center that we were at – and whose tanks we cleaned – was started by PERHILITAN to keep these terrapins from going into extinction. they have released about 40,000 terrapins into Sungai Perak ever since the start of their breeding program :) it’s really admirable, the work they do there.

now i want to talk a little bit about the brothers of terrapins, and an animal that is very familiar to all of us Malaysians – the turtle.

come nesting season, huge turtles are known to descend on the beaches of Terengganu to nest and lay their eggs. it’s a spectacular event that i daresay is quite the pride of biologists in our country. but like the river terrapin, the nesting activity and headcount of the turtles in our seas are dwindling frightfully. in the 60’s, there used to be about 3000-4000 leatherback turtle nests found on our very beaches, but in the past decade, there are only LESS THAN 10 nests per year. and these nests are mostly infertile.

those statistics are extremely scary, and if this keeps up, we are going to be losing a magnificent marine species. i’m sure i don’t need to explain why it’s important to preserve nature and wildlife; surely everyone already knows the reasons why. what I’m going to do though, is tell you – the individual – how you can help save the turtles.

1. Don’t Eat Turtle Eggs / Meat
you’d think that with all this focus on turtle extinction, people would know well enough to stay away from eating turtle eggs… but apparently they don’t. in my recent trips to Terengganu, I’ve seen ‘telor penyu’ for sale in a few markets. people buy and sell them, and it’s not very discreet. i don’t care what you say about the ‘unique experience’ of eating turtle eggs or ‘because other people eat them then so can I’… it is wrong. by buying or consuming turtle eggs and meat, or even keeping quiet when you see them being collected or sold, you’re harming the turtles and contributing to their extinction. so please, for the sake of a beautiful species of marine life, please don’t buy or eat turtle eggs and meat.

(these are terrapin eggs from the Terrapin Conservation center!! we got to see them in the nesting ground :D)

2. Don’t Litter
i know how it’s so easy to just chuck that plastic bag or cigarette butt into the sea when you’re out on a boat or having a quick tan on the beach, but each time you do that, an animal may die from choking on your litter. turtles are known to die from eating plastic bags floating in the sea (and there are definitely lots of plastic bags floating around in our seas), so do what you can to reduce the amount of litter in our waters :)

3. Raise Awareness
every cause needs people to believe in it before it can work. i’ve never been one to sit down and be quiet about an injustice being done, and I hope that everyone can do the same :) sometimes all it takes is a loud and clear sign that PEOPLE CARE, before the relevant authorities start doing anything about the problem.

4. Volunteer
you can volunteer with the WWF, who are very active in their turtle conservation efforts. volunteering your time and energy to this cause is a huge step, and i hope that by writing this post, i have at least stirred the curiosity of one person who would be interested in volunteering with a turtle conservation program. come the summer, i may do so :) haha i’m graduating from terrapins to turtles!!!

5. Donate to the WWF
you can do so on their website (http://wwf.org.my), or you can just pick up your mobile phone and SMS WWF(SPACE)Your full name(SPACE)Email address and send it all to 39398. each SMS donates RM3, which will go into their valiant efforts of habitat conservation for the turtles. c’mon, this is by far the easiest of the 5 steps :) do me a BIG favour and send an SMS too, okay?

ta-da!

i’m not receiving a single cent for this post. i returned their offer so that they could engage one more blogger who will in turn be achieving Step #3 up there through his or her blog and impact his or her readers on this issue. like with all efforts, little steps go a long way, and i hope this post that i’ve written eventually goes a long way too in increasing awareness about our turtles.

all it takes is a little bit of kindness to save a turtle :)

and if you would like to try your hand at cleaning a terrapin tank, you know where to holler ;)

the terrapins after we cleaned them, picture taken by Yun. Yun don’t you feel proud looking at how clean the floor and the terrapins are!!! hasil titik peluh kami :P

The Heart of Walking Away

On Chesil Beach, he could have called out to Florence, he could have gone after her. He did not know, or would not have cared to know, that as she ran away from him, certain in her distress that she was about to lose him, she had never loved him more, or more hopelessly, and that the sound of his voice would have been a deliverance, and she would have turned back. Instead, he stood in cold and righteous silence in the summer’s dusk, watching her hurry along the shore, the sound of her difficult progress lost to the breaking of small waves, until she was a blurred receding point against the immense straight road of shingle gleaming in the pallid light.

Extracted from On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan

that is the last paragraph of the last page of the book. Ian McEwan always knows exactly what to say. i am humbled and moved, but still proud and still frightened. i’ve got a hundred thousand Chesil Beaches tucked away in secret corners of my head that i often revisit; at times with self-justification, at times with regret. the immense straight road of shingle gleaming in the pallid light always feels like it comes from another universe.

Lipbalm and Me

lipbalm and i go back a long way :) it started when i was just 10 years old, and using that pink-tinted lipbalm made me feel a little bit more grownup. then there was that first ski trip to Mt Buller in 2001, where i had to hide my tube of lipbalm in my sock cos my dad kept taking it and using it on my brothers (urghghghg). and 2 years ago when Martian and i weren’t officially going out yet, i’d accidentally left my watermelon lipbalm in his HK apartment, and he playfully accused me of purposely leaving it there so that he would always have to think of me. and then there’s now - that same watermelon lipbalm is still with Martian, but i am not, because he’s there and i am here.

i also had my first kiss with lipbalm on! i was 14, and it was the kiss that got me my first boyfriend :D i had on the apple-flavoured LipIce that i used to wear all the time, and that kiss just went on for HOURS. best first kiss ever, and the fact that it was apple-flavoured kisses made it a lot more special and exciting. (sieutheng, thank you for leaving us when you did :P otherwise this kiss would never have happened… hahaha)

that was a long time ago, but even till now i’ve still got a real penchant for lipbalm. LipIce, for obvious reasons, is my favourite brand and just about the only one i ever use.

so, a little bit of pimpage for my favourite brand :) LipIce has this Color Lipbalm range that I currently use and really like. it is a range of tinted lipbalm that moisturizes your lips and dresses them up with light colour at the same. there are 6 different colours, and my favorite is without a doubt the one called Candy Apple. i love the hue of it – it’s such a natural and healthy shade of pink!

LipIce Color Lipbalm in Sweet Rose

tinted lipbalm is great for girls like me who don’t like the fuss of lipstick. gimme light and sheer colour over lipstick stains any day :) it’s great for lazy and fuss-free days too, because it brightens up my face on its own so nicely even without any make-up!

haha the above is me bored at the airport and applying lipbalm over and over again. lipbalm = travel necessity!!! i have naturally dry skin and lips, so i always have to have lipbalm with me to keep my lips soft and yummy. regular use of LipIce has given my lips mucho health and conditioning over the years. no more chapped lips! sexier, softer kisses!

and this is the LipIce Color Gloss and yours truly at a dinner event, mid-gawk at some gorgeous model onstage

for the lip gloss fans, LipIce also has 3 kinds of lip gloss out in the market. i used to buy all this really expensive lip gloss, but with LipIce Color Gloss, i don’t have to hurt my pocket so much :D going for RM 13.90 a tube, it is but a fraction of the cost of those expensive lip glosses. can save money!!! yet still have gorgeously glossy lips!!! i know a make-up artist who actually uses tubes of LipIce gloss on his clients because he says it’s good quality yet so much more affordable. such a clever man :P i shall steal your secret.

lipglossing in Timtam’s car hehe. Timtam you know you love LipIce too!!!

i now always have an emergency tube of lip gloss with me. the Summer Pink one has the nicest color! i’m also quite addicted to the taste of it. it’s damn nice and tastes like watermelon, yum yum.

speaking of watermelon lipbalm… okay lah actually it IS true that i left my watermelon lipbalm at Martian’s on purpose so that he would always have to think of me ;) sigh sometimes my boyfriend is so good at seeing through me. but don’t tell him I said that because he can get so smug.

Sergeant Pinkpau wearing LipIce Color Gloss in Fresh Peach! :D saya polis anti rasuah!!! matlamat saya adalah untuk membanteras jenayah peragut beg. dan juga mencuba semua warna LipIce Color Lipbalm :\

All These Unexpected Things

i spent the afternoon at the police station making a police report, because my bag just got snatched today.

yes, it finally happened to me :\ Martian, my parents and my friends always nag me about my safety because i spend so much time outdoors, taking cabs alone and trawling the streets of Kuala Lumpur (haha), plus these snatch theft cases happen to just about everyone these days. it’s like every other week you hear of someone you know getting robbed. well, i guess this week it’s me.

among other things, my wallet, camera and mobile phone were in my bag. i’m trying to keep happy by telling myself that it could have been worse - my laptop could have been taken instead! if that happened i would have just died. but i can’t help feeling upset about all the phone numbers i lost. and a lot of the things in my bag had sentimental value - my wallet was a gift from Azlan, my mobile phone from Martian, and the bag itself a birthday gift from my best friends.

sigh.

my whole family spent the afternoon separately at two different police stations - my dad was with me, while my mom was at a different station with my brothers lodging another report because… my younger brother’s phone was snatched two days ago. yup, two snatch thefts in my family within the weekend. my brother’s case was scarier than mine though; two guys actually grabbed hold of his arms while another snatched his phone from his hand. and this happened outside his school (my former high school), so all Sri Gardeners, please be careful from now on ok?

the fact that such rampant crime exists in our country is testament to how much our government needs to step up and shape up. Barisan Nasional, you have a responsibility to keep your citizens safe and well. i hope the loss of your two-thirds majority yesterday is a wake-up call strong enough to make you finally see that the rakyat were not content with your leadership and governance, and that we know we deserve better. you have a new mandate - please don’t exploit this again.

congratulations to the Opposition, especially PKR who jumped from only 1 seat in Parliament last term to an AMAZING 31 seats this term. you all have worked so hard and braved all odds; you truly deserve all the 82 seats won. but the Opposition has a lot to prove now. i hope you can all work together well and deliver all the promises you made to the country. please don’t let us down :)

to all voters and all Malaysians, i can’t even begin to articulate how proud i am of you and the country. when i woke up this morning, i thought i’d dreamed up all of yesterday. wasn’t it such an emotional night yesterday as the elections results trickled in slowly? did you whoop for joy at 4 a.m when it was confirmed that Barisan Nasional had lost their 2/3 majority in parliament? change is coming, fellow Malaysians :) and we were all part of it in some way or another. i can’t wait to see what is in store for the nation; here’s to a good, safe, healthy, happy future for all of us :)
