The X-Party and Gifts for the Martian

okay, first of all, an event notification!

as we all know, the MTV Asia Awards 2008 is going to be held here in Malaysia this year. if like the most of us, you don’t have tickets to the invite-only awards show, fret not!

in conjunction with the awards show, there’s going to be another party happening at the same time on the same day, and it’s called the MTV Asia Awards X-Party! brought to you by Celcom and Genting, the X-Party is going to be the wilder, less formal, let-hair-down twin of the awards show. the awesome Hujan will be performing, as will DJ Tony Touch and Faizal Tahir; all this plus a huge live screening of the Awards Show!

X-Party Details:

Date: 2nd August 2008
Time: 7pm – 3am
Venue: Genting International Showroom
Hosts: Cheryl Samad, Jien and Hannah Tan

scoring a pair of tickets for the X-Party is simple, and totally easy-peasy for all those who are already party animals! all you have to do is go for a night out at the clubs in your best party-wear and get spotted by the purple X-girls that will be stationed at the hottest clubs in town. catch? your party wear has to have a dash of purple ;)

the X-girls have been in three states in the weeks leading up to the party, but they are in KL for only one more night, which is tonight - Thursday the 31st. best of luck catching the X-girls around the clubs, and have fun painting the town purple!

i am free to blog right now because Martian is not layaning me at the moment. he used to get very iffy whenever i blogged (which explains why when i’m in Singapore i dont get to blog very much), claiming that i should be spending time with him instead of on my computer, but HEHE i have come up with the perfect solution for that. this is what i got him for his birthday a couple of weeks ago:

a PSP!

sigh yes it was expensive. but it was an important birthday, and seeing Martian’s excitedness when he opened the gift was worth every cent the PSP cost and every minute spent writing the advertorials that paid for this gift :))))) i got some of his favorite games installed in it, and now all he does is play poker and that car game - whatever it’s called - whenever he has a second to spare. so my plan to have a little bit of time to myself kind of backfired because now he doesn’t even talk to me anymore T____T

and then there was one night i paraded this new short skirt in front of him and he didnt even look up from the PSP T____T

me and Kitty being bored while he plays poker, haih

but it’s quite funny lah cos sometimes he’ll hurry out of the bedroom, and then i’ll walk out and catch him putting the PSP down guiltily. and last week when i was busy preparing for his party and asked him to help me, he said wait ah i need to go take a crap, but he spent something like FORTY FIVE MINUTES in there, and when i looked around, needless to say the PSP was NOWHERE TO BE FOUND. haih i feel angry just thinking about it. what have i done!! sigh nevermind lah at least i have time to blog now.

oh and since i get a couple of emails every now and then asking for gift suggestions, i hope the PSP idea and this bit henceforth will help you folks out a little with the gift-getting. Martian and my 2nd anniversary was on the 4th of July several weeks back, and i got him two things, one for each year we’ve been together. see, Martian has two things that he’s most passionate about - history and the environment - so i thought i’d get him stuff that’s related to both these things :)

the first thing is a book titled The Chronicle of Malaysia, Fifty Years of Headline News, which is this huge and very heavy compilation of Malaysian newspaper headlines from the past 50 years. every huge piece of news from our Independence Day in 1957 up till last year is documented in that book. it makes the most interesting read for anyone at all, history buff or not, because there are bound to be newspaper articles in there that you will remember reading from way back when.

we spent some time poring through the book together and picking up bits of news here and there and telling each other how we felt or what we were thinking when reading those stories or what we were doing/going through during that particular time in that particular year. the sort of stuff Martian likes to do. he’s the nostalgic kind :)

this book even comes with this DVD of some really amazing footage that is split according to the regimes of our five Prime Ministers (when it came to Mahathir’s regime, Martian switched the dvd off hahaha wtf). it features videos of events such as the first ever National Day celebration, the first ever parliament meeting, the signing of independence documents, 13 May 1969, the launch of Proton, the great flood of the 70s and many other things. it was really cool seeing in video all these things i’d only ever read about.

watching the footage of the floods in the 70s made me feel so proud of my country’s people. there were videos of soldiers and villagers building bridges and boats to bring people to safety, makcik-makciks cooking rice in great big pots to feed all the hungry villagers who had lost their homes, children helping out where they could, and rakyat of all races lending each other their strength and effort to make sure everyone was safe, fed and warm. it was beautiful. but that was in the 70’s. 40 years later it seems we’ve digressed somewhat. i dream that i will one day see a Malaysia like the Malaysia i saw in that video. but that’s a story for another day.

hahaha Pak Lah on the cover of Asiaweek in 1984!

this book can be found at most bookstores for RM 120, and is a great gift for anyone who loves Malaysian history or for older people who grew up during the times of our country’s infancy and development :) i would highly recommend it, and i plan to buy a copy for my former Sejarah teacher. yeah, Mr Mani. hahaha. he would love it, i think.

the other gift i bought for Martian was to address the treehugger and greenie in him. it was …

a pair of reusable chopsticks!

Martian ALWAYS makes damn a lot of noise when we go out to eat at Japanese restaurants or any place that uses those disposable wooden chopsticks. he even makes noise when i take a straw for my drink :( so a pair of reusable chopsticks is something i’ve been wanting to get for Martian for the longest time, but despite hunting high and low, i have never managed to find any.

but great blessings come in the form of D’Jungle People, this team of experiental learning consultants (really fancy term for people who teach you life lessons in the most fun ways ever!) who facilitated all the Brats workshops, camps and events i used to go for :) Google told me that the folks at DJP imported reusable chopsticks from Taiwan and sold them at cost price to their clients in a pledge to save trees from being cut down to be made into chopsticks, and i was just over the moon. i quickly emailed Evan of DJP (who’s a real sweetheart!) to ask if he still had stock, and whaddya know, the next day i was over at their office in PJ to pick up 3 pairs of reusable chopsticks :)

these beauties are made of stainless steel and are put together by simply screwing the two halves of a chopstick together at the middle. they come in a slim and sleek case that looks like a pen and can be easily slipped into your pocket or your purse. they’re great :) i love my pair of reusable chopsticks and bring them with me everywhere i go now.

the chopsticks make a great gift for anyone at all - the environment-loving people would absolutely appreciate it, and everyone else who never knew how they could help the earth will now know :) i bought each pair of chopsticks at RM 20 from DJP. give them a holler if you want some! they are absolutely wonderful people.

okok Martian has finally stopped playing the PSP. YES. BEDTIME. okay g’nite all. hehe Martian is staying with me tonight :) i think it’s my secret birthday today or something. he’s being exceptionally nice to me. earlier today he took me out to have Carl’s Jr for lunch. ZOMG…… do you know how rare it is that he lets me eat junk food. i intend to treasure that moment in my little heart forever and ever.

Who I Would Share My Last Oreo With

i figure that by now most of you guys have seen the Oreo posts floating around the blogosphere lately, so you must already know what this post of mine is for :)

Oreo is having a competition where they are inviting people all over the world to make a video that depicts an Oreo & Milk Moment. if you look up their Youtube channel, you will find some excellent submissions up already – some touching, some cheerful, some funny, but all really good videos.

Oreo also engaged a handful of bloggers to write about this competition, and i was lucky enough to be one of those selected. you don’t have to persuade me very hard to write for a cookie like Oreo, which i already know like the back of my hand and love :)

below is the video i made for this competition:

i have had a lot of Oreo moments in my life. one of them was this time I went on a trip to Genting with some friends, and i was tasked with buying snacks, and all i bought was RM 30 worth of Oreos cos i had a craving :P everyone scolded me at first but we ended up finishing all the Oreos on the first night. then there was the time we made a cheesecake with an Oreo cookie base, and the time i spilled an Oreo McFlurry all over Azlan’s car. remember my dessert fast two years ago? i broke it with an Oreo McFlurry at the airport :) and then there are all the times i sneakily buy a small pack of Oreos while Martian isn’t looking, so that i can snack on them while he’s sleeping at night….

but i guess nothing tops the Oreo Moment i had when i made that video up there. it was a moment of realization that was very personal and very precious to me, so i hope you guys wont judge me too much as you watch the video. and thank you Oreo, for this new Oreo Moment, and for being such an awesome cookie :)

Paw

i keep clicking around as if there’s going to be an answer for me somewhere on the internet. like maybe wikipedia can help me solve this problem, or maybe an email will appear, heartfelt and detailed, giving me a better understanding of this whole situation. i really wish i was there, in person and in flesh, so that i could do something helpful with my hands and my hugs instead of being a phone call and some hazy synapses away. i always choose all the wrong times to leave.

i saw this old photo of you that alex put on facebook. i have so much love for you that it spills over. i could love the you in that old photo from 5 years back as much as i love you now, and i would still have plenty of love left over. when i said that i need someone to draw strength from, i only had you in mind. you inspire me daily with how brave you are. when we’re together, it feels like everything in the world is in their rightful place and all is calm. when we’re holding each other, everything feels just. right. i cant wait to see you and make everything good again.

Wong Wenqi Is Weird!

because there are so many upsetting things going on right now and i’m starting to feel very affected and stressed out, today i am choosing to take a breather from those things and blog about something happy.

and so…! this is a post about my dear friend wongwenqi, also known as wenqiwong or wwq or banana or lump or any other weird name that we, her dear friends, choose to accord her. because she is also very weird :D in a good, cute, irresistible sort of way! as you shall soon see…

i first met wongwenqi at the Nuffnang screening for Pirates of the Caribbean mid last year. she was sooooo shy and didnt say a single word to me except for some random comment about a Nuffnang badge. then at one point she let out an equally random squeak. i would later find that she dispenses such entertaining randomness very often, most of the time resulting in people staring at her in disbelief and then collapsing in laughter. then we will point at her and go “hahaha you so cute!”, at which point she will start protesting and squeaking like, “what! what! WHAAAAAAT!!”

after the movie screening, we met properly again on my first day as a Nuffnang intern. i only met her for about 15 minutes before the workday ended, and we both had to take the train to KLCC after that. she said she would come with me, and the very moment we stepped out of the office and closed the door, she turned to me and asked me THE QUESTION (wwq do you remember THE QUESTION!)… and when i gave her THE ANSWER, it was no turning back from there! we shared a bond! we were destined to be best friends forever!!!

it’s only been less than a year since then, but wwq is one of my closest friends, so much so that i miss her deeply when i dont talk to her for a few days T____T the simple truth is that she makes me happy and she makes me laugh. cos she’s so darn cute and innocent and random. and because you share a good thing when you have it, today ladies and gentlemen, i want to share with you …. The Chronicles of Wong Wenqi is Weird!!!

this is actually a very long-awaited post because i’ve been taking my time compiling material for it. i could spend more time baiting her, but i feel that this is a very appropriate time to write about wwq! so here goes!

1. this is after i told wwq i was on holiday in china a few months ago:

wenqi says: i only know the long long uhhh..
wenqi says: what u call that again
wenqi says: the border thingy
wenqi says: the wall
wenqi says: yah
wenqi says: the long long wall thingie wtf
».¸.·* pinkpau says: THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA WTF

2. this is wwq trying to teach me the hanyu pinyin tones for Mandarin:

wenqi says: 1 is like.. no tone one

wenqi says: 2 is like the sound go up one

wenqi says: 3 is the sound like… low low go down one

wenqi says: 4 is like.. u shout u damn hate the person

3. wongwenqi is very well-known for how slow she eats. this is a 4-way chat between me, KY, skyler and her!

KYspeaks says: i see wenqi eat
KYspeaks says: i can pengsan
KYspeaks says: so slow
KYspeaks says: cut so many times 1 piece of blardy fish

wenqi says: i know lahhhhhhhh
wenqi says: wtf
wenqi says: ur boss always cannot wait for me
wenqi says: and then will leave me there alone to eat while he go walk walk wtf
wenqi says: fuck that shit ok

4. wwq is also very well-known for her cleavage-baring tops! you want to stop staring but you just cant help yourself!

KYspeaks says: everyone looks at ur boobies
KYspeaks says: the cut you wear
KYspeaks says: EVERYONE LOOKS
s k y l e r says: ya they always spill out
wenqi says: wtf
KYspeaks says: take it from a guy’s perspective
».¸.·* pinkpau says: EVERYONE LOOKS hahahaha
wenqi says: i wanted to wear a normal t shirt once but cannot find one wtf

5. and this is after i got a sponsored phone, which wwq had test-used for a while, and she’d left all her SMSes in the inbox. i saw a message from one JPWong saying ‘i love you!’ and decided to ask her about it:

».¸.·* pinkpau says: who is jpwong! why does he looooove u
wenqi says: HUH WTF
wenqi says: he’s my father! how u know one wtf
».¸.·* pinkpau says: why u call ur father jpwong hahahaha and why u call ur mother laura!
wenqi says: no lah
wenqi says: so that.. when i get kidnapped rite
wenqi says: they won’t know who is my father and mother
».¸.·* pinkpau says: -_-
».¸.·* pinkpau says: dont u WANT them to call ur father and mother -_-
wenqi says: uhmm
wenqi says: then later they ask for ransom then my father and mother broke d how leh

6. this is wwq teaching me about the deeper things in life:

wenqi says: it’s like playing the trumpet
wenqi says: if i dun open my throat and say like AWWWWW
wenqi says: instead of like.. closing throat a bit like EEEEE
wenqi says: then the sound comes out fatter… juicier… rounder wtf
wenqi says: and i think that applies to many other things in life

7. a rare economic analysis by wwq:

wenqi says: to me i think sex in kl is cheaper than having sex in penang

8. she’s so cute and so easy to bully!:

wenqi says: he once lied to me
wenqi says: saying if u dun finish eating ur ice cream fast.. it’ll evaporate
wenqi says: and i believed him wtf

9. and she is also indecisive! taken from a meme on her blog:

4. Where is the place that you want to go the most?
A place that I’ve never been before. Preferably a place with snow, but I would have to have the option to go to some place else if.. IF I realized that I didn’t like snow.

10. i even got collaboration for material for my WWQ is weird post!:

Timothy Tiah says: funny wenqi quote today
Timothy Tiah says: I saw a fly in the airplane on the way here to bangkok
Timothy Tiah says: she saw it.. flinched and tried to shoo it away
Timothy Tiah says: then she said
Timothy Tiah says: “poor fly…. going to end up in Bangkok alone and lonely because he doesn’t know how to speak thai to the thai flies”

———-

there are more but i will save those for another time :D maybe a WWQ is Weird Part 2 !

wwq has just left for Singapore to further her studies in music, and it was nice to meet up with her last week. she told me to meet her at Oxford Road hahahahaha why is she so cute! i am going to miss her so much when i go away T____T it’s going to be a 4-year US/Singapore long distance relationship… sigh. i dont know if i can cope with this!!!11

i’m so glad that i met wenqi. friends like her are hard to find. the man whom she will eventually love is a very, very lucky person.. because if there is any one person who is supportive, kind, thoughtful, genuine and cute all rolled into one, it is wong wenqi.

sigh! and she’s also very weird. but that’s why we all love her.

Whoosh

everything is a whirlwind right now. i am talking to too many people and doing too many things. listening to too many different sides of many different stories, all of which claim to be true. i am very confused. and very tired. cant wait to have some time to myself and be able to sit down and do what i love doing most. it is very sad that this is all happening now. i have exactly one month before i leave. i really wish things didn’t have to be this way. and i could just… enjoy myself.
