The Dark Knight and Martian’s Birthday

July 19th, 2008

i havent written a movie review in ages, but i really want to share my thoughts and discuss this fantastic movie that i recently watched. it’s called The Dark Knight :)

The Dark Knight is without a question the most anticipated movie of the summer. i was excited about this movie for a number of reasons - one, Batman is my favorite superhero of all time. two, Christopher Nolan is at the helm. three, star-studded cast with many of my favorite actors (did NOT expect Aaron Eckhart to be in the show. what a yummy bonus!!!). four, i loved Batman Begins, and that’s coming from someone who thought the old Batman movies were legendary. five, my favorite Gotham villain is in it - The Joker :)

and after watching it, i’m pretty convinced that The Dark Knight is my favorite movie of this year. here are some things i loved about it :

1. BATMAN’S INVENTORY

what is a Batman movie without the mind-blowing gadgets that make you go PHWOAARRRR! i love how in times of danger, when you’re wondering just how the hell Batman’s gonna make it out of THIS one alive, he whips out some fawesome gadget/machine/toy at the veryyy last second, and kicks major villain butt with it while looking like a million bucks. the sheer creativity and the evolution behind his gadgets are just intelligent to the point of being obnoxious, and TDK did not disappoint in this aspect. some seriously kick-ass inventions are unveiled in this movie, with the grand prize going to the Batpod and this flabbergasting new invention that he uses to locate a person. my heart aches with the fact that such cool things only exist in Gotham City.

the Tumber

2. CAST

i love the fact that they brought Christian Bale back as Batman. to be honest, i think he was a little bit overshadowed by the technology and grandeur of this movie, but i still think that he is one of the best actors we have out there. i thought he was a good fit for Batman / Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins, and i still think so now after watching TDK. George Clooney was always a tad too charming for Batman, and while Val Kilmer made a good Batman, he wasn’t a good Bruce in my humble opinion. Christian Bale, though not perfect, comes closest to striking the alter ego balance as seen so far.

Alfred Pennyworth (Michael Caine), Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman), Comm Gordon (Gary Oldman)

Gary Oldman as Comm Gordon is perfect and no one will ever change my mind about that!!! Morgan Freeman didnt shine as much as he did in BB, but did a great job with the little screentime he had. Michael Caine was fantastic as Alfred the butler, delivering each line with crisp wit and sardonic grace as is the classic Alfred hallmark, always providing humor.

i really hated Katie Holmes in BB, so i was glad to see that she was replaced… yet i was still a little bit dubious about Maggie Gyllenhaal playing Rachel Dawes; i didn’t think she had the spunk it takes to be The Superhero’s Love Interest. (Kim Basinger as Vicky Vale, Teri Hatcher as Lois Lane in that Superman series on tv all those years back, Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy - now that’s spunk!) Maggie Gyllenhaal fell a little bit flat for me, but i think she did the most that she could with her role. she kicked more butt than Katie Holmes, that’s for sure… but i would have loved to see Rachel Weisz or maybe even Rachel McAdams playing Rachel Dawes. (eh why do they all have the same first name!!!)

Aaron Eckhart was an absolute gem in TDK. i didnt know he was going to be in the movie until i read a newspaper interview a couple of months ago about his role in the new Batman movie. the news shocked me, but i was very very happy. and i thought he was brilliant in his role :) emotional, believable, and a character who could be identified and empathized with.

hehehehe Edison Chen!

3. HEATH LEDGER AS THE JOKER

but of course :) hasn’t Heath Ledger come such a long way? i remember the very first time i saw him - a greasy and carefree teenager dancing across bleachers in ‘10 Things I Hate About You’. then i saw him again in A Knight’s Tale, and never again after that. i never watched Casanova or Brokeback Mountain, so in a way i’ve never actually seen Heath Ledger’s transformation as an actor.

but holy shit, his performance in The Dark Knight was just. something else. altogether.

he was psychotic, hysterical, cuckoo, a madman. everytime he licked his lips, i felt like i wanted to crawl back into my own stomach in disgust. he perfected the Joker laugh, and gave the Joker a whole new crazy voice never heard before. i loved how he put all these little nuances into the character - the lip-licking, the wild hand gesticulation, the half-giggle half-snort, the eye-rolling. it was all just so haphazard and all-over-the-place, which is exactly what the Joker’s persona is.

now a lot of people are saying that Heath Ledger put Jack Nicholson’s Joker to shame. i’m not sure what that means, but i’m inclined to think that they are playing two very different Jokers. i watched the movie with Nicholson’s Joker many times when i was a kid, and believe you me, there was nothing more frightening in my little life back then than Chucky (of Child’s Play) and The Joker as played by Jack Nicholson. Nicholson’s Joker made my blood run cold at the mere sight of him, his polished and doll-like make-up was just freaky, and he exuded the most sinister and cruel aura.

Jack Nicholson as the Joker in 1989

i am actually more frightened by Jack Nicholson than i am by Heath Ledger. but that doesnt mean Heath Ledger’s performance was any less brilliant than Jack Nicholson’s all those years back. where Jack Nicholson’s Joker personified ‘creepy’ and ‘frightening’, Heath Ledger’s Joker was something else altogether. he was unpredictable, childlike, had some kind of ADD thing going on, insane… but above all, a genius. he was a mastermind, and that was manifested in his deliciously cunning plans where there just seemed to be no outwitting the Joker. Nicholson was cruel but boring; Heath Ledger was cruel AND intriguing. and that’s where i think Heath Ledger has the upper hand as the Joker.

my favorite parts of the Joker in TDK were the parts where a remotely human part of him surfaced. without spoiling it for those who haven’t watched, you can see this in the parts where he flippantly says how he got his scars and the part where he goes “Hit Me!”. it was a most brilliant transition; in a matter of seconds, he goes from being kooky and drunkard to businesslike and dangerous. yet at all times, the Joker is always in control. demented, but still in control. you fear him, but you’re also disgusted and dumbfounded at the caricature that is his existence.

i wholeheartedly support the petition to give Heath Ledger his Oscar :)

4. THE ‘CITY’

i’m not going to say which City, but there is a City, and it was brought out so beautifully in the movie that i wanted to cry. i’ve seen this City many times, but NEVER the way it was presented in TDK. this is a real City in our world, colorful and vibrant… but successfully made to look like Gotham. sigh. the buildings. the skyline. that road. that escalator. SIGH!

5. PLOT, SCREENPLAY & STORY

who agrees that the one-liners in this movie absolutely kick ass? “Why so serious?”, “You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become a villain,” “Some men aren’t looking for anything logical… some men just want to watch the world burn,” “The night is darkest just before dawn”.

the words in TDK are top-notch. little wisdoms and teachings here and there. and i love the entire irony of the TDK story. well written, well plotted. an excellent superhero movie that keeps us all at the edge of our seats, littered with impressive conflicts and jaw-dropping surprises, fantastic pace and breathtaking action scenes that never leaves us bored, bundles and bundles of creativity thorough yet succinct exploration of ideas and themes … all seamlessly tied together by the Nolan brothers.

6. CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

this is going to be short. i just want to say how i love the fact that they gave the audience some history and insight on the Joker, and allowed us to connect with him and try to understand for ourselves why he turned out the way he did. i also love how they made Batman human, how they gave him insecurities, emotions and showed us the rash and reckless side of Batman that is almost NEVER seen in his cool and calm character. i really enjoyed the movie because of this. i often walk out of Superman shows feeling like i never really got to know the man, but the people behind Batman and Spiderman usually do a very good job of character development. The Dark Knight is practically a breakthrough in this field.

okay no more :) i want to say a big THANK YOU to Nokia and David Lian for the invite to the TDK premiere :)

psssst did you know that Batman uses Nokia in TDK? hahahaha. David says that it’s the new touch-screen model that is to be released late this year. finally, something Bruce Wayne owns that i can own too :P

————————————-

it’s Martian’s birthday today :) well, technically it was over 3 hours ago, but he gets to have a 2-day birthday this year cos he’s special like that. we went out for dinner at Il Lido in Sentosa today, where he made me cry (again) but we have since patched things up (again) and now love each other more than ever. i swear i have to one day blog about all the times we fight and make up; it will make such a funny story!

he’s having a birthday party tomorrow, which i spent a good chunk of the past few months trying to put together, but let’s just say he is a very difficult client and i now want to slit my wrists from all the stress. sigh. aiyah dont know lah. i’m just glad it’s going to be lots of fun tomorrow. it’s an Inner Child party, hehe, and many of his friends from KL, Singapore and HK will be here. plus i ordered a reaaaaaaally bigggggggg Awfully Chocolate cake….. :D

guess what i got him for his birthday! i regret it immensely. he now spends more time with it than he does with me, and it’s been only 24 hours since i gave it to him. sigh. what have i done!

okay okay goodnight! i gotta go finish this really big card that i’m making for his bday. pictures soon!

and just so it’s on my blog, happy birthday baby :) i love you. pleeeease eat some cake tomorrow, it’s very nice wan….

It was really nice…but I think it just lack some ass kicking hero vs villian moves and more use of his gadgets will make it a really perfect movie

  • 4. Kevin  |  July 19th, 2008 at 5:18 am

I also have to say that I think the Joker actually outshone Batman in a way haha…

  • 5. yerdeh  |  July 19th, 2008 at 6:14 am

Christian Bale is the perfect Batman, I really enjoy how he goes the extra mile for any character he plays. Can’t wait when he becomes John Connor in the Terminator series. GOOO CHRISTIAN!!!

  • 6. Michelle  |  July 19th, 2008 at 6:33 am

Happy birthday to Martian. =D I never thought that he was a Cancer. I’ve just turned eighteen like 7 days ago!

  • 7. Jeff from LA  |  July 19th, 2008 at 6:41 am

I just saw the Dark Knight as well. That movie was incredible. Heath Ledger’s performance is really Oscar-worthy. He was the center of attention in every scene he was in without trying.

I was also impressed with how they based the story around the duality of good and evil and how complicated both are.

Last, I agree with you, the Bat-gear/Bat-tech is great. I really want a Bat-bike. That thing was awesome. Especially when it flipped over the huge truck.

  • 8. Andrew  |  July 19th, 2008 at 7:42 am

TDK is soooo good!!! The Joker is really mental. This is the best superhero movie I’ve seen this year. I like the Tumbler, but the bike is even cooler! I think I’m gonna watch it again. :)))
I’m guessing that you got him a game console, ps3 maybe? Happy birthday martian!

  • 12. Ivan  |  July 19th, 2008 at 9:51 am

Isn’t Heath Ledger dead on drug overdose?… do they give oscars posthumously? I do agree that his performance here was top notch.

  • 13. nyrac  |  July 19th, 2008 at 10:03 am

i haven’t watched the movie yet. in fact, i’ve never really been a fan of superhero movies. i can’t even remember when was the last time i watched a batman/superman/spiderman movie =.=||| but since your review made it so positively glowing, i guess i could give it a try and watch it :)

and as for Martian’s birthday party, i can’t wait to read you blog about it. happy belated birthday Martian!

  • 17. thegeekinpink  |  July 19th, 2008 at 11:29 am

watching this was all the more eerie knowing heath is dead. it felt weird, disgusting and so chilly! but i really really love his performance, it’s amazing it’s his best yet and because of this, i honestly think this is the best batman movie ever.

btw, happy birthday to your boyfriend

  • 18. Jay  |  July 19th, 2008 at 11:39 am

I honestly don’t know how to react to TDK. I loved Batman Begins and Batman. Batman Returns and Batman Forever were decent and I like to pretend Batman & Robin don’t exist.

    ***spoiler warning for anyone ahead***
Anyways, back to TDK…I felt like I was wanting more when the film ended. It felt like it ended because it was getting too long, like they decided to say, “okay, time to end this thing!” (Kinda like this paragraph!)

I had more issues on the movie and if you want details or just a good decision on Batman, MSN me.

Finally, I don’t know about you, but I was really hoping to see both ferries explode is a fireball after a “BOOM” flag appeared from somewhere. That’s a true Joker bomb.
    ****END OF SPOILERS****

    [SPOILERS]
” i just want to say how i love the fact that they gave the audience some history and insight on the Joker, and allowed us to connect with him and try to understand for ourselves why he turned out the way he did”

Eh did they do that? I thought Joker just made up his “life story” as he went along, he gave two different stories of how he got his scar, I thought the whole point was like Alfred said he wasn’t a normal criminal whose psyche could be figured out rationally.

  • 34. pinkpau  |  July 20th, 2008 at 4:36 pm

waffle im not talking to (or replying ur comments) until i beat ur score!!!!!!!!!!! im playing now!!!!!!! dont disturb

  • 35. k0k  |  July 20th, 2008 at 6:19 pm

I’m a… Joker (not Batman) fan, from way back. I read all the definitive comics on the Joker and he’s my favourite fictional character (not just villain) of all time. I totally love the way they skipped his origin stories (i’ll explain the plural) and in spite of the fact that his clown face was only make up, I’ll have to say that this joker is the only live interpretation which is true to the comic books.

Joker’s origin is murky as different comic writers gave him different ones. Joker himself remarked that he can’t remember which is the real story because if he was going to have a past, he preferred “it to be multiple choice”.

This movie is also the first Batman movie to be directed and written by a TRUE fan of the franchise. It explored the most beloved themes in the Batman mythology - how Batman is just as batshit insane as the Joker himself (”you’re a freak, like ME!”) suggested in The Killing Joke (1988), how Batman represents order while Joker, who represents chaos, is the direct consequence of that - and that Joker needs Batman (”you complete me”), as shown in an issue when Batman was purportedly dead and after killing Batman’s alleged murderer, the Joker became sane and led a normal life, till Batman returned and Joker became nuts again. The MAIN theme here is taken straight from The Killing Joke - how One Bad Day can turn someone just as nuts as the Joker, only in the graphic novel, he did that on Comm Gordon while in this movie…

Harvey Dent’s story was spiritually lifted out of Batman: The Long Halloween series (1996-1997) which dealt with the tragic, tragic rise of Two Face. If you can only read one Batman comic in your lifetime, The Long Halloween is your bet. It’s Batman at his detective story finest.

HAHAHHAA i actually guessed PSP, then thought martian couldn’t be that insane to abandon you for a handheld game console. so my second guess was a camcorder. Or a i don’t know, magic 8 ball.

But it really was a psp! Haha!

  • 37. k0k  |  July 20th, 2008 at 6:21 pm

“..with the grand prize going to the Batpod and this flabbergasting new invention that he uses to locate a person…”

Hey there, locating a person anywhere in the world wouldn’t be too impossible nowadays with many smart phones coming with GPS receivers ; )

Still rarely used by the public though, but we’ll get there - bye bye privacy!

  • 40. Tim  |  July 20th, 2008 at 9:24 pm

Looks like we will never talk again :(

  • 41. GnomeFan  |  July 20th, 2008 at 11:09 pm

i saw the trailer a few days ago. The joker seems like the main attraction for the movie. i don’t know why. maybe that’s just in my head but it kept pulling me to go and spend my money to watch the movie!

will try to find some time and go watch it. i’m sure it’ll live up to the hype.

p.s : i also read that it broke the opening week record that was set by spiderman 3.. wah!! now really wanna watch! :P

woo hoo … finally back from thailand… Didn’t know that geekinpink was actually a girl (and so pretty somemore) … haha…

TDK is good! Its the best movie i’ve watched for a year or two … the 3 twist n the end was a good suprise. And i loved the joker, he overshadowed the batman in this movie. Poor dude should still be alive!

  • 46. Huai Bin  |  July 21st, 2008 at 9:29 pm

I loved The Dark Knight too! :)
The best part is of course Heath Ledger’s performance. I love the way he explains his scars in three different versions. I like the explanation done when he crashed Bruce’s party.
Too bad he decided it was a good idea to take massive amounts of oxycodone with benzodiazepines. No more sequel from him then.

  • 47. Darren  |  July 21st, 2008 at 10:33 pm

definitely movie of the year, too bad heath is dead. His performance was brilliance, it was one of the best i have seen.

    i want the cake!

  • 49. Eleanor  |  July 22nd, 2008 at 11:59 am

i just watched it last night, and the script was so good that i was crying half the time… yeah, why so serious right? the one liners have been running thru my conversations so much that it’s killing my friends. :p

heath ledger was incredible… and yes, all those little gestures really added to the character because it made him believable, not as a cartoon character but as an insane person. always been a fan of his… you have to watch candy. have to!!! it’s not as good as requiem but his acting alone is worth the watch.

  • 50. Jay  |  July 22nd, 2008 at 12:35 pm

Btw, I was searching the interwebs and I found a certain oreo video…interesting…

  • 51. Simon Seow  |  July 22nd, 2008 at 4:43 pm

It’s a city that starts with ‘C’. Haven’t watch always full house damn.

  • 52. Sam Wallace  |  July 22nd, 2008 at 8:09 pm

To make a HERO human, all you need to do is to SUFFER/KILL his girlfriend, as in the Spiderman & Batman movies..

  • 53. eunice  |  July 22nd, 2008 at 9:32 pm

    gonna watch it tomarraw!!! :D

  • 54. martian  |  July 22nd, 2008 at 11:30 pm

by the way, advertorial or no, su ann spends sooo much thought on her blogs, it consumes her. it’s everydrop of her heart. and that’s what she did for my bday, and im lucky to have her.

at times the Joker seemed almost too smart, borderline clairvoyant, but i guess that makes him a good foe…

i hv been reading ur blog for quite some time but this is my 1st comment here. i simply love the way u write ur blog, so poignant and detailed. i can never describe my feelings best in writing but when i read urs, i can relate urs to mine perfectly. sometimes i feel we have so much in common in the inside, however i’m a more introvert and less optimistic person than u who seems to hv lots of friends and enjoy life. i always learn sth from u, u kinda inspire me in different ways. so pls dont ever stop writing. now u know u hv 1 more supportive reader, u must continue to write ya. i really love ur writing.

i never fail to read ur blog whenever i come online, i always look forward reading ur blog. this post on TDK is so brilliant that i totally agree with ur views which makes me finally decide to write a comment on it.

thanks for inspiring me and sharing ur stories, feelings and thoughts.

be happy always, su ann (may i call u so?) =D

su ann thanks for writing this review, ’cause if not then i wouldn’t have went to watch the movie, and i would’ve missed out on one of the bestest movies i’ve ever watched! i loved the dialogues, i loved the wit, i loved the acting, and i loved the scenes, and oh i just can’t stop raving about it to my friends now.

“i’m just a mad dog chasing after cars. i don’t know what to do with them after i’ve got them, i just chase!” brilliant.

Powerful acting, powerful action, huge IMAX sequences give this Batman a great big commanding feel. However, story is held hostage to action, especially in the second half.

I had my doubts, but they pulled it off well.
