The X-Party and Gifts for the Martian

July 31st, 2008

okay, first of all, an event notification!

as we all know, the MTV Asia Awards 2008 is going to be held here in Malaysia this year. if like the most of us, you don’t have tickets to the invite-only awards show, fret not!

in conjunction with the awards show, there’s going to be another party happening at the same time on the same day, and it’s called the MTV Asia Awards X-Party! brought to you by Celcom and Genting, the X-Party is going to be the wilder, less formal, let-hair-down twin of the awards show. the awesome Hujan will be performing, as will DJ Tony Touch and Faizal Tahir; all this plus a huge live screening of the Awards Show!

X-Party Details:

Date: 2nd August 2008
Time: 7pm – 3am
Venue: Genting International Showroom
Hosts: Cheryl Samad, Jien and Hannah Tan

scoring a pair of tickets for the X-Party is simple, and totally easy-peasy for all those who are already party animals! all you have to do is go for a night out at the clubs in your best party-wear and get spotted by the purple X-girls that will be stationed at the hottest clubs in town. catch? your party wear has to have a dash of purple ;)

the X-girls have been in three states in the weeks leading up to the party, but they are in KL for only one more night, which is tonight - Thursday the 31st. best of luck catching the X-girls around the clubs, and have fun painting the town purple!

i am free to blog right now because Martian is not layaning me at the moment. he used to get very iffy whenever i blogged (which explains why when i’m in Singapore i dont get to blog very much), claiming that i should be spending time with him instead of on my computer, but HEHE i have come up with the perfect solution for that. this is what i got him for his birthday a couple of weeks ago:

a PSP!

sigh yes it was expensive. but it was an important birthday, and seeing Martian’s excitedness when he opened the gift was worth every cent the PSP cost and every minute spent writing the advertorials that paid for this gift :))))) i got some of his favorite games installed in it, and now all he does is play poker and that car game - whatever it’s called - whenever he has a second to spare. so my plan to have a little bit of time to myself kind of backfired because now he doesn’t even talk to me anymore T____T

and then there was one night i paraded this new short skirt in front of him and he didnt even look up from the PSP T____T

me and Kitty being bored while he plays poker, haih

but it’s quite funny lah cos sometimes he’ll hurry out of the bedroom, and then i’ll walk out and catch him putting the PSP down guiltily. and last week when i was busy preparing for his party and asked him to help me, he said wait ah i need to go take a crap, but he spent something like FORTY FIVE MINUTES in there, and when i looked around, needless to say the PSP was NOWHERE TO BE FOUND. haih i feel angry just thinking about it. what have i done!! sigh nevermind lah at least i have time to blog now.

oh and since i get a couple of emails every now and then asking for gift suggestions, i hope the PSP idea and this bit henceforth will help you folks out a little with the gift-getting. Martian and my 2nd anniversary was on the 4th of July several weeks back, and i got him two things, one for each year we’ve been together. see, Martian has two things that he’s most passionate about - history and the environment - so i thought i’d get him stuff that’s related to both these things :)

the first thing is a book titled The Chronicle of Malaysia, Fifty Years of Headline News, which is this huge and very heavy compilation of Malaysian newspaper headlines from the past 50 years. every huge piece of news from our Independence Day in 1957 up till last year is documented in that book. it makes the most interesting read for anyone at all, history buff or not, because there are bound to be newspaper articles in there that you will remember reading from way back when.

we spent some time poring through the book together and picking up bits of news here and there and telling each other how we felt or what we were thinking when reading those stories or what we were doing/going through during that particular time in that particular year. the sort of stuff Martian likes to do. he’s the nostalgic kind :)

this book even comes with this DVD of some really amazing footage that is split according to the regimes of our five Prime Ministers (when it came to Mahathir’s regime, Martian switched the dvd off hahaha wtf). it features videos of events such as the first ever National Day celebration, the first ever parliament meeting, the signing of independence documents, 13 May 1969, the launch of Proton, the great flood of the 70s and many other things. it was really cool seeing in video all these things i’d only ever read about.

watching the footage of the floods in the 70s made me feel so proud of my country’s people. there were videos of soldiers and villagers building bridges and boats to bring people to safety, makcik-makciks cooking rice in great big pots to feed all the hungry villagers who had lost their homes, children helping out where they could, and rakyat of all races lending each other their strength and effort to make sure everyone was safe, fed and warm. it was beautiful. but that was in the 70’s. 40 years later it seems we’ve digressed somewhat. i dream that i will one day see a Malaysia like the Malaysia i saw in that video. but that’s a story for another day.

hahaha Pak Lah on the cover of Asiaweek in 1984!

this book can be found at most bookstores for RM 120, and is a great gift for anyone who loves Malaysian history or for older people who grew up during the times of our country’s infancy and development :) i would highly recommend it, and i plan to buy a copy for my former Sejarah teacher. yeah, Mr Mani. hahaha. he would love it, i think.

the other gift i bought for Martian was to address the treehugger and greenie in him. it was …

a pair of reusable chopsticks!

Martian ALWAYS makes damn a lot of noise when we go out to eat at Japanese restaurants or any place that uses those disposable wooden chopsticks. he even makes noise when i take a straw for my drink :( so a pair of reusable chopsticks is something i’ve been wanting to get for Martian for the longest time, but despite hunting high and low, i have never managed to find any.

but great blessings come in the form of D’Jungle People, this team of experiental learning consultants (really fancy term for people who teach you life lessons in the most fun ways ever!) who facilitated all the Brats workshops, camps and events i used to go for :) Google told me that the folks at DJP imported reusable chopsticks from Taiwan and sold them at cost price to their clients in a pledge to save trees from being cut down to be made into chopsticks, and i was just over the moon. i quickly emailed Evan of DJP (who’s a real sweetheart!) to ask if he still had stock, and whaddya know, the next day i was over at their office in PJ to pick up 3 pairs of reusable chopsticks :)

these beauties are made of stainless steel and are put together by simply screwing the two halves of a chopstick together at the middle. they come in a slim and sleek case that looks like a pen and can be easily slipped into your pocket or your purse. they’re great :) i love my pair of reusable chopsticks and bring them with me everywhere i go now.

the chopsticks make a great gift for anyone at all - the environment-loving people would absolutely appreciate it, and everyone else who never knew how they could help the earth will now know :) i bought each pair of chopsticks at RM 20 from DJP. give them a holler if you want some! they are absolutely wonderful people.

okok Martian has finally stopped playing the PSP. YES. BEDTIME. okay g’nite all. hehe Martian is staying with me tonight :) i think it’s my secret birthday today or something. he’s being exceptionally nice to me. earlier today he took me out to have Carl’s Jr for lunch. ZOMG…… do you know how rare it is that he lets me eat junk food. i intend to treasure that moment in my little heart forever and ever.

I totally hate disposable chopsticks especially those with like splint all over the place.
But bringing a pair of chopsticks wherever u go cant be quite a burden. Yeah its not big or bulky, but guys don’t have extra handbags like girls do.

  • 11. Jo  |  July 31st, 2008 at 10:15 am

I’m planning on giving a PSP for my boyfriend too! Actually i am the one who wanted it but i don’t think he will allow me to buy it so i guess the only way i can have the PSP is by giving it to him as a birthday gift. (But after reading your post, i’m not sure whether he will let me pinjam it)

When i was in studying in UUM, i always bring along my own chopsticks to eat the Meehun Tom Yam and people thought i was weird.

Keep posting! I really enjoy your martianisms posts. It makes me understand more about my bf. You know how guys enter ‘the cave’ when they have a problem.

  • 12. chm  |  July 31st, 2008 at 10:25 am

I made the same mistake of giving my bf a PSP for our anniversary and voila…same problem..

he hardly looks at me, or talk to me and even if I am out in my best outfit (for ie: super short minis and a clevage parading top) - HE DOES NOT NOTICE!!!!

*sigh* lets shake hands and be besties now :P

  • 14. reallybites  |  July 31st, 2008 at 11:24 am

baby you are the best! i love youuu.why didn’t you blog abt the gift i gave you? you don’t like it?

  • 16. songjun  |  July 31st, 2008 at 11:41 am

eh lol better check how sustainable those stainless steel chopsticks are.

They could have used up more energy intensive processes and generated more harmful waste (CO2 and water usage/contamination for cooling the steel + extraction proccesses) then those crap wooden chopsticks that were probably made from recycled or waste wood.

yea the environmental engineer in me speaks! HAHA

  • 17. Kevin  |  July 31st, 2008 at 11:42 am

    Hoi..where’s my gift? =(

  • 20. kreazi  |  July 31st, 2008 at 2:27 pm

Now you know why I *refused* to even get PS2 for my hubby!!! He’s such a workaholic, we only see each other for a couple of hours a day. Imagine with PS2 or PSP… I think he’ll talk less than 10 words to me in a day!!!

Oh, I’ve read about the reusable chopsticks and would love to get a few pairs too, but haven’t come across any yet. Nowadays, I also go w/o plastic bags when buying things, unless it’s huge volume of weekly groceries shopping… ppl do get very surprised whenever I said I don’t need the plastic bag, or the wooden chopsticks or spoon or whatever..

  • 21. Fu Han  |  July 31st, 2008 at 4:01 pm

Oi! Metal Chopsticks are very annoying! Cannot kepit anything wan!

They have a lot of them in Dorae Garden over at Sri Hartamas and they are damn frustrating. My simple mind cannot master the art of such complex technologies. :S

  • 22. miss p  |  July 31st, 2008 at 4:07 pm

i use green bags too! from coles and woolies (aussie supermarkets). they have cute colours like pink purple and yellow. not just boring green. :D

  • 23. sheon  |  July 31st, 2008 at 4:59 pm

i almost got it right………..its a mobile PS!!! psp…hahaha….. did you offer a prize??? i want half of it!!

the book is great! hahaha……but Pak Lah?!?!?!?!?!…hahaha…..

ah..D’Jungle People…….they did the team building thingy for my company… :P and i would love to have the chopsticks! maybe i’ll ask from them the next time i see them…… :)

    lovely ……. :)

  • 24. Michelle  |  July 31st, 2008 at 7:36 pm

Haha, I’ve been to several camps held by DJP. =D So, i guess you must have known Keith and Timothy. =D

And the reusable chopsticks look like those chopsticks I have at home, except for the fact that you can’t get them into halves.

The car game is probably Grand Auto Theft. I play that game before, it’s so damn violent but sickeningly fun.

  • 25. ront  |  July 31st, 2008 at 7:52 pm

hehehe…i take my handheld gaming device to the toilet as well…..now anyone wants to use my device?

  • 26. k0k  |  July 31st, 2008 at 8:10 pm

umm, aren’t those disposable chopsticks made from bamboo? I’m sort of a greenie as well trying to reduce my carbon footprint, rejecting plastic bags and whatnot but bamboo… they grow really, really fast, don’t they?

I bring books to the can, usually. my reflexes is sluggish when I’m taking a dump :(

  • 27. k0k  |  July 31st, 2008 at 8:11 pm

    *are* god, my grammar sucks

  • 28. pinkshirtz  |  July 31st, 2008 at 11:19 pm

Goody for greenies. Your bf sounds so familiar. I get all feisty too when i see wooden chopsticks and especially the wrapper that comes with it, it ends up flying everywhere!!! Cis!!!

  • 29. Huai Bin  |  August 1st, 2008 at 12:02 am

I’ve seen FF7 Crisis Core on the PSP and I’m staying away coz I have a particular attraction to Square’s RPGs and spend a huge amount of my time on them.

He didn’t look up from the PSP despite the parade? Hmm… ;)

  • 30. iamthewitch  |  August 1st, 2008 at 7:58 am

Pinkpau I gave my bf PSP for his birthday last year too! I know what you’re going through…. haha.. but thank god for my case, the addiction didn’t last very long. Give it 2 weeks to 1 month tops and he’ll start to realise what he’s missing. :P Anyway, I love your gift ideas. You should make a blog post about gift ideas soon, especially for Christmas and Vday. :)

  • 31. vvens  |  August 1st, 2008 at 10:08 am

ahahaha. soon he will be bored of it lar. soon :)

  • 32. hw  |  August 1st, 2008 at 11:09 am

or you could hide his psp =p

  • 33. eunicetan  |  August 1st, 2008 at 11:53 pm

i wanted to get a psp for my bf’s long bus rides then i was thinking, what if it ends up not just for bus rides. die lah. no more time for me. so i didn’t.

so i ended up buying things that he needed like shirts to replace the ones he threw out, an old book he really loved but misplaced while moving around, and a keychain engraved with corny and sweet nothings cuz he broke his keychain.

the book sounds like a real good idea. i was thinking of getting a book along that line. either that or this other book about may 13 =)

  • 34. pinkpau  |  August 2nd, 2008 at 1:29 am

king : can put in pocket! :D but ya i know what you mean about it being mafan for guys. most of the time you guys just grab ur keys and wallet and thats it!

waifon : huh seriously? you mean supermarket checkouts are still unfamiliar with the concept of bringing your own bags?!?! @____@

mike : dont be cynical now.. :) it’s not the monetary value of these things that are paramount

nyuk : ZOMG IN PINK? i wanttttt O_O hahahahaa why you play his game hahaha that’s hilarious!

    foreverjas : in 3 weeks =(

fa : ITS YOUR BDAY TODAY OREDI RIGHT! HAPPY BDAY FA! I GO YOUR BLOG NOW

music magi : hehe most welcome mr magi. hey actually lots of my friends are interested in getting the chopsticks. will buzz you one of these days if they’re serious abt the orders :) sigh the psp is an evil thing. i empathize greatly with the remorse of mrs magi :(

michelle : someone in the comments below said he sells for 4.50! T___T

tom : it’s different wan! korean chopsticks are flat. these ones are round like normal chopstix

shaolin : which one more awesome! why you never say my book awesome….. it’s an entire book abt how my country is dealing and healing after all your people come and colonialize us T___T

jo : you mean you actually want to borrow his PSP? hahaha! of course he must lend it to you!!!! but i think give him 2-3 weeks to be obsessed with it first :P eh but i have a lot of couple friends who both have psps and they always play games with each other. it’s like .. umm bluetooth i think! very cool! bonding time

chm : hahaha how like a man!!!

jappuffy : A FRIEND!! T____T im so glad i am not alone! wuwuwu are we really 2nd place to a bloody game console T___T are we not hot enough!!!

reallybites : direct clients pay cash! *grins

martian : i like! but cannot put lah.. i shy … *_* but the cake can put right?

songjun : stoopid T___T go away!

    kevin : ITS HEAVY

    seller : O_____O

    emily : i shy :P

kreazi : sigh you made the right choice not getting him the PS2. that must be worse than the PSP cos of all those time consuming RPG games! do buzz the folks at DJP if you wanna get the chopsticks :)

fu han : haha you’re talking abt the flat korean chopsticks that require some skill! the ones i got for martian are round. so its like normal chopstix

miss p : OMG WOOLIES. the mention of that name has just brought back a whole flood of memories T____T do you live in doncaster? or are there like lots of woolies all over melbourne?

sheon : haha i must have offered one buck. in which case you get 50 sen :P lol doesnt pak lah look funny! yaya do buy from DJP :) they sell to their clients.

michelle : brats camps? no i dont know keith, and have only met timothy once. no it’s not GTA! it’s some racing game … duno what its called

ront : sigh you men and your games!!!

k0k : i’ve not read much about disposable chopsticks, but from what i hear it’s not made out of bamboo. china and japan use some crazy number of chopsticks a year, something like 100 billion pairs iirc, and it takes lots of resources to manufacture, package and distribute. i guess that’s the main argument against chopsticks, because someone also recently told me that trees are not actually felled to make chopsticks, because chopsticks come from the unused branches of trees that are logged for timber. so it’s like, might as well not waste these branches. hmm. dont know how much this is true though!

pinkshirtz : haha you and him can meet up and plot to save the world from pollution!

huai bin : final fantasy 8 ftw! yeah he didnt look up :( it was an emotionally scarring experience

iamthewitch : it’s already been two weeks and no signs of letting up T___T ya i’ve been planning to do a post like that, but just never had the time to compile it. soon, soon!

    vvens : I HOPE SO!!!

hw : if i hide it, i scared he kill me :(

eunicetan : haha i was thinking the same thing about my bf and his travel time. unfortunately it has eaten into MY time with him :(( your gifts sound super lovely tho :) haha i have that may 13 book! not that impressive. this chronicle of malaysia is better

  • 35. miss p  |  August 2nd, 2008 at 2:33 am

  • 36. mixue~  |  August 2nd, 2008 at 2:49 am

hey don’t be shy to blog about the gift that Martian gave you lah. i’m sure all of us here are eager to read it loh. by the way, you’re the person who will get shy one meh? muahahahhahahahh

  • 37. k0k  |  August 2nd, 2008 at 3:24 am

well, wiki says they aren’t bamboo - so that’s that. I’m still wondering about how they actually make those reusable chopsticks. Smelting and shaping metal is a very expensive process, no doubt using heckuva lotta fossil fuel to do it.

Besides, (i don’t know if it’s just me but) stainless steel chopsticks feels weird when I use them. I’ll stick to my old reusable lacquered wooden ones.

Then there’s those impotent plastic forks… and knives.

  • 38. MIchelle  |  August 2nd, 2008 at 6:18 am

    Well, I got it for 1 AUD… the chopsticks…
