i am blurry with sleepiness, disappointment and fatigue. but nevermind that. short post because i have to get some sleep lest i die
1. apologies to all the folks who requested for the password for my password protected posts today.. i’m afraid i had to remove them because there is an error with my wordpress theme that only allows the password to be used once. strange thing, that is. oh well. i guess i’m just not meant to rant under cover :\
2. i watched Midnight Meat Train earlier tonight. zomg. never again will i.
3. i got nagged massively by an accounts lady at The Star today for not clearing the cheques they sent to me previously. it made me sad because i am TRYING my very best to navigate this life of bank accounts and cheques and ICs and visas and whatever documents that are so very confusing!! yet she still scolded me :( and didnt give me new cheques either :(
4. i went to apply for my US Visa today. the officers at the embassy are YUMMY. when the guy who took my file looked deep into my eyes through yonder dusty glass window and said, “please take a seat, we will call your number shortly”, i thought i was going to melt. he had this killer smile and these mischievously sexy eyes. and then the interviewer next to mine, who looked a little bit like Mark Wahlberg, could speak fluent Chinese. sigh. wo ai ni, embassy officers!
5. i have exactly two weeks left before i leave for the US. friends whom i have not seen in ages, please do call me! i would love to see everyone before i go.
6. i have been exceptionally early for everything over the past few days! this is good news! the birth of the new PUNCTUAL me!
7. i miss blogging about food and restaurants. soon, soon…
8. my dinner tonight was a bowl of rice with soya sauce drizzled over it. weep-worthy, my life is.
9. the Dell XPS m1330. what do you guys think?
okay that’s all i am capable of writing now. need. sleep. byebye with much love. proper post tomorrow when this pounding in my cranium goes away :(

Hi Su Ann,
Just would like to wish you a safe journey to US and all the best in your study. Maybe one day we could meet, cousin. Take care.
Ps: Dell is good but make sure you get at least 3 years International warranty…since you will travel around…
5. foreverjas | August 7th, 2008 at 8:20 am

6. Anonymous | August 7th, 2008 at 8:56 am
Got the Dell XPS M1530. The Dell M1330 may be a bit small to watch movies all the time on. However, it’s good if you plan to be very mobile. Anyways, the features are good. It’s a good laptop for a cheap price.
7. cher wee | August 7th, 2008 at 9:03 am
I pray that you have a safe journey and fruitful years in US. Please continue to blog k….really love reading your blog
8. Nat | August 7th, 2008 at 9:09 am
Oh ya, wondering how long will it take to get tourist visa to NY? Coz I’m going to NY, Paris and Japan this dec, and the travel agency told me to apply the visas from the embassies itself and I’m currently in sg, that means I have to go to those 3 different embassies just to get them -_-
9. The Faux Fashionista | August 7th, 2008 at 9:20 am
Oooo I know which guy you’re talking about (the one who can speak Chinese)!!! He interviewed me when I first applied for my visa back in 2006 :P But I’ve never seen a drool-worthy officer like the one you described (killer smile and mischevious eyes)… =P

all the best in ur preps for US.
13. pinkshirtz | August 7th, 2008 at 11:02 am
hehe … my gf just oddered the same dell. The good thing about the dell is that u dun have to on the laptop to view pictures, or listen to music or watch movie. There’s a button for a really quick startup in less than 5 seconds to do that. And it’s cheap too. With free upgrades to 3 or 4 gig ram. Worth it. But beware of the warranty. 330 for a year of extension. And dell always spoil at the end or right after the warranty. Not as realible as HP or sony. Good luck in US!
Will definately miss your quaintly malaysian posts!
PS: How come the US n UK visa place has such a dodgy entrance but when u enter in …. it’s completely different? haha!
14. kreazi | August 7th, 2008 at 11:45 am
Su Ann, they didn’t reissue the expired cheques for you? OMG~ Mmm.. I am sometimes like you too… keeping a cheque under some piles of documents and completely forgetting about it… until the personnel had to call me and inquire if I have banked in the chq coz it showed in their records that I haven’t and it’s going to expire soon. I think normal cheques once dated, can only be honoured until the next 6 months. For some organisation, it might be a tad troublesome to reissue chq if it means having to go thru some stringent procedure and a whole load of people for verification before the director or authorised person can sign the new chq… so I can actually understand her frustration :P
15. carol | August 7th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
i emailed you about the computer, miss lim su ann! =))
2 weeks - treasure the time! *hugs*
16. xxx | August 7th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
i was looking around for a new laptop not too long ago and considered getting the xps 1330, but opted for the hp pavilion dv3029tx. it’s the same size and similar specs and in my opinion, more aesthetically pleasing. you can check it out if you’ve got the time.
enjoy your last 2 weeks in malaysia, i’ve got 2 weeks left before i go back to manchester myself. all the best to you, and take care! x
17. KY | August 7th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
restaurant? bring me bring me!
18. WunMin | August 7th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
I personally don’t recommend you buying the DELL XPS M1330. I myself use a DELL XPS M1210 while my younger sister has a DELL XPS M1330. I’m not sure about the other series of DELL laptops but both my sister and my laptops have overheating problems and mine got sent back to the DELL factory several times for various repairs. Also, since DELL XPS laptops’ casing is made of aluminium alloy, I had several incidents of getting electric jolts from my laptop when I rest my laptop on my lap. Very not fun.
DELL customer service in Malaysia is undeniably the best but the service in US is among the worst. I remember the last time I called DELL in US, I got routed to an Indian dude speaking heavily accented English and couldn’t understand me properly. Also, if you were to purchase the laptop in Malaysia, the local warranty doesn’t cover for overseas repair.
I would suggest that you look at Apple instead.
19. Keit | August 7th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
Your levis 501 post, was it actually an ad? Coz I don’t really see the point of mentioning the brand. Plus your ads are kinds confusing, you never clearly state what they are. If you’re gonna accept payment, at least let it be known! It’s like those famouns authors who go review their books on Amazon under anon pseudonyms
20. booha | August 7th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
i’m not flying there to get the book wtf. i told her she can keep the book di. as a farewell gift from me hahaha
i’m using xps m1210 and no probs so far la. the thing about these small laptops is that it is hot but not that hot until you cant rest your hands on the palmrest. if you get the 15″ or bigger, should be cooling. and check the US warranty etc. if you have friends in dell, can get the laptop at a very cheap staff price.
21. hw | August 7th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
I’ve been using dell all my life, have bought 3 laptops, 2 desktops from dell and 1 widescreen 22″ lcd from them so far for myself and family. Like WunMin mentioned earlier, Dell has the best customer service in Malaysia amongst other similar companies.
The Dell 9300 laptop I’ve been using is about 3 years old, still working fine, except for an issue on LCDs for machines shipped around my purchase time where vertical lines appear after a year or so. Though my warranty expired, Dell acknowledged it was their fault shipping systems with faulty LCDs (produced by some other company) and when I called them they sent a technician over to my place to get the lcd replaced FOC and in under an hour.
I haven’t had any overheating problems with my Dell… unless of course you rest your laptop on your bed which will obviously prevent hot air from dissipating via the bottom of your laptop.
The Dell xps m1330 is damn sexy. I’ve been contemplating getting either that, or the xps m1530 (which has better specs, albeit heavier and slightly more bulky) as a replacement for my 3 year old inspiron. One thing I can advice you, is that you should definitely buy your system in the States. Dell US has much better rebates/discount vouchers and if you look around online for them, you can get like up to 750usd discount on some systems. I have no fracking idea why Dells in Malaysia are more expensive, considering they are all made in Malaysia.. I bought my laptop from the States and it came inside a box that said ‘Made in Malaysia’…
So yeah, look out for great deals online from Dell. Make sure you get the 3 year full warranty as well, as usually that is when most laptops start to malfunction or need repairs. No point getting 1 year or 2 year warranty, as the problems usually dont surface till after 1.5-2 years.
Get a 9cell battery as well if you are going to travel around alot.. it adds abit to the weight but it’s well worth it..
If you do end up buying your laptop in Malaysia, you can always request for transfer of ownership to the States, and if I’m not mistaken the warranty transfers over as well. Also one reason why you want to buy your laptop in the States is that the power/voltage etc and sockets over there are different, so save you some trouble.
but yeah, dell laptops do jolt you if you rest them on your bare lap, not sure about the new xps 1330 though, but that can be easily solved by just taping the screws/contact points that cause the jolts with some tape/rubber/pads
other great laptops are lenovo/ibm , toshiba.
and omg you’re going off already! have fun in the States, blogs lots + lots of pictures!!
22. UncleJosh | August 7th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
that bowl of rice seems really interesting… :)
oh well… hope you would be able to meet everyone before you fly off… and i am sure you would be having jolly good time while broadening your horizon and spreading your wings…
shall wish you the best and await your next coming post that has more meanings to it than the words itself says

28. King | August 7th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
Dell is fine, but HP is better. If you were to open a Dell computer, you would find low grade quality hardware used compared to other brands such as HP and Sony. Yes, it would still work fine, but a lot of problems will occur. True, their customer service might be one of the best but that is only to compensate the frequent problems caused by the low grade quality.
It’s just like (no offense) a Proton and a Honda.
If you are a frequent traveller, Sony or Fujitsu might be the best option. A lil more costly, but its because its so mobile.
29. aya | August 7th, 2008 at 8:33 pm

Jesus Christ Su Ann, I never knew Terrence was such an asshole! I say if he’s not man enough to apologise after all he has done, you have no reason not to cut all ties with him.
32. nehemiah | August 8th, 2008 at 12:05 am
seriously, dell. if the couch has extra pennies and you don’t need much space, go SSD for the hard drive too!

34. julie | August 8th, 2008 at 1:31 am
omg yes. i think i know which guy youre talking about. is he almost bald? i thought he was hot.
35. Jeff from LA | August 8th, 2008 at 2:07 am
Lol @ your description of the US embassy interviewers.
I’m so happy you’re finally coming to America……………..but so sad that you’re going to be on the exact opposite end of the country. Tell me if you ever get a chance to come to LA.
As for the laptop, I like my Sony better than my bro likes his Dell laptop. However Dell’s tech support is way better than Sony’s. With Sony, I always wait for hours and have to call some stupid long-distance number. They’re probably not too different in reliability is my guess.
36. devina | August 8th, 2008 at 2:33 am
you’re going to US in 2 weeks too ? i’m going to SF to study in less than 2 weeks also :(
which part are you going to ? :)
37. C-Y | August 8th, 2008 at 5:08 am
Hi, Welcome to US- the country of freedom. You will have a good time here. =)
I personally think that get the laptop here in US for
1) its cheaper right here
2) the power chord head here is different from Malaysia
Good Luck!!
(p/s which part of US are you coming?)
38. Samantha Poh | August 8th, 2008 at 5:16 am

39. aunt counting $ & cts | August 8th, 2008 at 6:55 am
1. spank u! blogging at 5.13 am! u are destined to come to NY. then u should be fine as u are already living the eastern time zone.
2. hey, the acc lady is a bully. the Star has to honor the contract with u. this means her job is to issue u new cheques no matter how tedious.(it is her employment contract with the Star to function) u must be paid as u did not break a contract, u just lapsed some cheques which is not uncommon. ur hard earned rewards!! .l..here in USA lawsuits possibly will follow esp this is a big company….many lawyers will be happy to act for u. go talk to higher officers/managers to resolve.
40. pinkpau | August 8th, 2008 at 7:57 am
michelle : i seem to have fallen out of the habit of taking pictures of food :\ yalar my dinner is like that cos my family doesnt care about me anymore *cries
cel : yayayaya i agree
sheon : i’m even going to miss the permatang pauh by election.. :( but when i come back, it’s 2012 and it will be the next GE! :D ooooh chiangmai ! you had much fun, yes?
jennifer : i am going to miss chinese new year for the next 4 years.. :( maybe we can meet over christmas?
foreverjas : of course the pink!!!
anonymous : thank you! duly noted :D
cher wee : thank u so much :))) i could never stop blogging, i think.. haha
nat : same time as mine - just go there for the interview with the relevant documents (you can schedule an interview as late as the day before), then if you pass the interview, you can get your visa the next day
the faux fashionista : wahh that’s two years ago. i really dont know how they do it.. seeing and interviewing people day in day out for so many years O_O
voooon : lunch is like 4 hours from now and i still havent slept :\
edna : thank you!! :)
pinkshirtz : oh! i didnt know about that function. yaya apparently i really have to look out for the warranty esp since i’m going to be in the US. ah quaintly NY posts will be better :) trust me. i can already feel it.
kreazi : they wanted me to write letters before they would reissue the cheques :\ like you, i didnt know that they expired within 6 months too .. and yup she did say that it’s a very tedious process if the payees dont clear their cheques
carol : thank you my dear!! got it
xxx : thank you! i will check out the hp!
ky : only if we can call daphne… !
wunmin : yes i’ve heard about the overheating :\ definitely a cause for concern. as for apple, it would take some time for me to get used to the OS, and i really wanna use my computer asap when i get to NY :\
keit : well if you took a bit of initiative you would find that the post is categorised under Advertorials. please do give me a good reason why i need to plaster big sentences like THIS IS A PAID POST all over my blog :) in my humble opinion it is completely unnecessary and especially redundant if people already can tell it’s an ad the moment they look at it
booha : eh you go work in dell la… :D pleeease
hw : EH that means its cheaper to get my laptop in the US?? really?!?! and how do i transfer ownership/warranty.. can i do this when im buying the laptop?
unclejosh : yesyes call meee
kei : COS IT WAS SO GORYYYY T___T
sha : i actually never knew that!! is it really much cheaper?
bryanlyt : i actually had plans for that :( it was a sponsored party too :( but i just didnt have time to put it together. haih
ront : dont you nag me too :(( at least i got my visa, right!
king : it’s really weird because a few years ago everyone was telling me i made the wrong choice buying a compaq, but now everyone is recommending hp. hmm! i gotta look into this. do you recommend any specific model? you’re right that i need something mobile, cos i bring my laptop almost everywhere i go
aya : omg you havent packed?! please do it now!!!!
huai bin : that is so kind of you :D i will take that as an IOU!
laksarian : sigh i dont know lah. im still very upset about the whole thing. but thank you for understanding that i’m not wrong in being angry about this
nehemiah : i’d hate to sound like a total n00b, but i really am. what is an SSD?
mulvis : sure anot! i dont think i took the train anywhere within the last week..!
julie : THAT’S THE ONE!!!!!!!!!! zomg
jeff from la : hello, spring break at LA!!! :D which sony do you use? i was actually looking at the new vaio CRs for a while
devina : new york :)
cy : i never actually knew that computers are cheaper in the states! thanks for letting me know :) imma go do some price research now. will be going to NY!
samantha poh : aww :) thanks sweetie
aunt : haiya! cannot sleep is like that lah! eh no lah its not that she didnt wanna give me the cheques at all. she just wanted me to put my request in writing. but walau she really nagged me kau kau.
41. C-Y | August 8th, 2008 at 10:47 am
You are welcome. I think US here cheaper because of the deals or sales through online shopping. Can recommend you the websites where sometimes can find some good deals.
http://www.dealsea.com
http://www.fatwallet.com
http://www.dealsofamerica.com
I hope you enjoy NY and good luck of getting your laptop
(I never been to NY…=) )
42. Jane | August 8th, 2008 at 11:16 am
Dang, the people at the US embassy here weren’t nearly as nice or good-looking. My interviewer was this really bitchy girl and I was freaked out of my socks. Glad that’s over with.
43. Peter Tan | August 8th, 2008 at 11:36 am
Dell XPS M1330 one of the sexier models around. But make sure you get 3 years warranty to go with it. The 9 cell battery is heavy like a sack of potatoes but goes on and on and on and on. The only thing is whether they provide the same kind of excellent service over in the US.
44. Yappy | August 8th, 2008 at 11:37 am
Omg… leaving in 2 weeks, so soon!!! Time really really flies by!
Yaya, must blog about food.. I miss your food posts. But I’m in australia, can’t try out your recommendation if you wrote one.
Sigh… I can relate with your bad experience with the accounting lady, though mine not similar case or place. I think it’s just a Malaysian attitude. I bet if you’re a 40+ woman she won’t even dare to say anything. The reason she dare to nag (bully) you is coz you’re young. :(
Take care, good luck in preparing for your journey! :)))
45. mulvis | August 8th, 2008 at 12:02 pm
Not sure?:D Never seen u in real person, that girl I saw which I assumed as u was in blue, and a same bob like urs..~___~

hi su ann!
i think i had the same thoughts tooo when i went applying for my US visa 2 yrs ago.. hahaha :)
and i had white rice with soy sauce too… few mins ago. :( no time to go out n get food becuz i hav less than 7 days to my mcat. :(
go out and have all the fun in the world before you leave yeah! and remember to spend time with your fam!! u’ll miss them, but it wont be as much as they will you. :) huggles.
47. nehemiah | August 8th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
an SSD is a Solid-state drive. Regular hard drives have rotating metal discs. SSDs have no moving parts in them.
SSDs are faster and more energy-efficient. regular hard drives currently are way, way cheaper and they offer much bigger capacities.
48. Eric | August 8th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Try the Dell Studio line.. Really nice laptop with better-than-average features. It’s a model that sits between the XPS and Inspiron line so you get the best of both. If u do intend to get the XPS, just be aware that the palm rest tend to get hot sometimes because it’s made of metal (or aluminium).
Just my 2 cents worth since I work with lotsa Dell machines.
49. hw | August 8th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
su ann, i think you can just call dell customer support and have your warranty transferred over. They have some regulations/restrictions/t&c on the transfers but should be no problem going from MY->USA or vice versa, at least i had no problems. just make sure you get the same warranty/years transferred over.
the reason why it is cheaper in the States is because of the great deals/offers you can get for laptops over there. Minus that, the price is about the same (maybe more expensive because of the tax there). Dell Malaysia has some crappy deals like rm100 off or free laptop bag etc, while Dell US has discounts like usd 500 off, but not all the time though. End of year is near, so should start keeping your eye out for discounts and coupons.

Hey hun, i think Keit is right in his own way. When we come in the page u can’t really see the word advertorials. Could be to do with page coding? NT too sure. Just a thought.
Tc.
53. ront | August 8th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
did anyone mention how big does the SSD go so far?
last i saw was a ‘huge’ 64GB in a Toshiba R500…
i’d still prefer big big HDD…..
54. Mike | August 8th, 2008 at 10:18 pm
Aiyo, buy the laptop herelah. How much cheaper can you get in US? You can have all the softwares, games and whatever junk loaded and use it on the flight mah. As for the model and brand, you won’t go wrong with any of these market leader - HP, Dell, Sony or Fujitsu. Who knows your taste more than youself, su ann?
55. Julian Cheong | August 8th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
Hey! You going off never call me go out already. Yun came back and now she left already. So sad. =(
Get the Dell XPS m1330. XPS m1350 also not bad. =)
56. quin | August 8th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
su ann, why don’t you think of getting a mac? XD
57. asdfg | August 9th, 2008 at 12:34 am
better to get a laptop in US, if anything goes wrong, you still hv warranty to begin with. remember to learn some home recipe, that is more important than doing last minute shopping. if you ask international student what they missed the most, their answer must be food or partner or………….family?. you cant buy home cooking anywhere else but home.
