The Last Leg Of Things

August 21st, 2008

i usually sit in the lounge at the lower deck when i take the bus back from singapore, because the seats are wider and a lot comfier, and also because there’s usually no one else there, which means i get unadulterated peace and quiet. it’s also great being able to pick whatever movie i want. but sometimes i’m not so lucky, and i get a hollering bunch of kids who in between jumping up and down the seats, fight with each other (ignoring the fact that i could put up a good fight too) over which movie to watch. i long to tell them that there really is not much of a difference between Balls of Fury and Talladega Nights; they’re both lame. but then again when i was younger i really liked Mars Attack so who am i to pass commentary.

then there is the occasional lone guy who tries to keep a tete-a-tete going even though i pointedly keep staring at my book (which then gets: oh hey that’s a really good book, i read that a few years ago, have you gotten to the part where he meets the sheep man, oh you havent oh i’m sorry did i spoil it for you, but even so another book you have to check out is blablablablabla) or loudly exclaiming how i’m so tired (yeah me too haih life is so difficult these days study study study then after school have to work like a dog to earn money hey what do you do anyway? i actually run my own business blablablabla), but much to my chagrin, i sometimes find myself being very curiously drawn into these conversations.

then there’s also the guy who talks too loudly and too long on his mobile phone. or worse yet, the guy who’s far too generous with his bodily gases and isn’t ashamed of it.

but the other day, i encountered a new species of lounge partners: The Caucasian Expat! there were four of them - an american couple and an australian couple - and they’d all been working in Malaysia for 3 years. throughout the entire 5 hour ride to singapore, they talked about Malaysia and all the gritty comparisons that will inevitably come to anyone who’s lived in another country besides Malaysia. it started when the american lady expressed her disdain at the service in Malaysian hospitals, but the australian lady said that when she was at Gleneagles, the service was wonderful - “they even gave me little sandwiches and drinks and everything, but i suppose that was because it was a case of ‘hello, white person!’”, and ended with the american man saying with much sprightliness, “coming into singapore from malaysia is like getting out of a jungle and being welcomed into civilization” upon arrival at the Singaporean immigration.

many other topics were touched on in between, ranging from our political situation and our taxis to the state of our toilets and our currency. (my favorite phrase of the day was: “it’s okay to pay extra, after all it’s only ringgit. the ringgit is like leaves off a tree!”) mostly these things made me sad, but i didnt know if it was because some of the things they said were glaring truths, or if i was upset that these foreigners had such a bleak view of my country. maybe a bit of both.

i’m two days away from leaving, and i feel like there’s so much left to KL that i havent even seen or fully absorbed. i’m going to be taking away with me only fragments of a big picture, only such small pieces of this city that i grew up in. there are a lot of things i havent done, and many of these things wont fit in a suitcase. it’s been a very melancholic couple of weeks. i know i will eventually come back one day, and there will always be summer breaks, but there’s just a lot that i will be missing out on. four years is such a long time to be away. it’s going to be a time so pregnant with events, opportunities, big things happening to loved ones, new restaurants, stories, political change, exams, weddings, graduations… and i wont be here to see any of these. sigh. i dont care what anyone says.. skype just isnt the same as being there in person.

i’ve been frantically eating all sorts of malaysian food over the last week. all my final meetups have been done over delicious things like a piping hot claypot bowl of bak kut teh or my favorite teochew porridge in pudu. yknow, the things i will miss. i really gotta have that SS15 rojak and a really good bowl of curry laksa before i leave. tonight: nasi lemak antarabangsa with Martian! and tomorrow, chili pan mee with the nuffnang folks!

though some of my friends are being cheeky. remember the New York Cheesecake sieutheng and the bunch got me for my farewell party? last week, i wanted to eat chili pan mee for my farewell lunch with the nuffnang boys, but they took me to this place called Yellow Cab Pizza instead, and ordered these pizzas called ‘New York’s Finest’ and ‘Manhattan Meat Madness’. then just yesterday, edmund passed me a box of Big Apple Donuts from his sisters, with a note attached - “Preparing you for the onslaught!” hahaha so cute all these people. i heart.

a picture from my farewell dinner with waifon, albert, skyler, arthur and nazrul, because it’s the cutest pic ever! arthur was teaching us a rude sign, so we all decided to take a photo with various rude signs:

the guy who’s seated second from the left is arthur, and he and i go way back :D one day i’ve gotta tell you guys the story of arthur and i. hahaha it’s a barrel of laughs. “i hate fish” hahahaha okay shhhhh dowan to spoil it. waifon is on the furthest left and she is seriously the most sweetly garang person you will ever meet. it’s hard to explain :P albert is behind me doing this very complicated series of rude motions with his hands. i met him at this play called Endgame, and i was very amused to see his confused and completely mind-boggled face after the show. i swear his eyes were glazed hahaha. nazrul is second from right, and he is one of the coolest guys ever. nazrul, i’m so glad we met :) skyler is on the furthest right, and working with her was a truly fun experience because there’s just so. much. to talk about! she’s also damn angsty wan, as you can see from her blog :P

and here’s the luggage bag i just bought. it’s so humongous that i can curl up in it, and there’s still extra space. and once i fill it with all the shoes and bags i plan on bringing, i hope i figure out where to put all the rest of my stuff :\

so many things to bring, so little luggage space. and dorm room space, too :( apparently i only get 110 sq feet. i’m going to be a mouse!

When I left Malaysia to further my studies, I was so sad to leave behind friends and family. I was like a homesick puppy. After several years, I didn’t want to come home. My parents attended my convo and practically had to drag me back home. :(

Ok, I HAVE to comment, ’cause I see a lot of coincedences in this entry!!!

    1. I prefer to sit in the lower deck of the bus too! So much more comfortable. And I haven’t had the luck of being exposed to so many other different types of passengers, ’cause 9/10 times, I get the mobile phone guy! The guy who talks so loudly. -_- I swear, the last mobile phone guy I met, I knew his whole life story ’cause he felt compelled to call EVERY SINGLE FRIEND OF HIS to relieve his life story– from his first crush to how he went to s’pore to work. -___-

    2. I met albert at a play too! He’s my best friend’s friend, met him when I was in high school! Doubt he remembers me now. =/

    3. I also think I met Nazrul recently. He works for NTV7 right? :P

    4. We have the same luggage bag!!!!! It is too small, I guarantee you. T__T

And last but not the least, where is this teochew porridge in pudu!!! :)

  • 12. kreazi  |  August 21st, 2008 at 6:47 pm

i’ll be in us too, but florida for me. but will be in ny sometime january. hope to see you there! (: anyway, i kinda agree on what you said about those opinions and views from the foreigners about msia, because i found them a little discriminative and shallow sometimes. oh well.
anyway, does your luggage have the TSA lock thingy? cos i think the usa customs are quite strict about it. (:

  • 36. anonymous stalker  |  August 22nd, 2008 at 1:19 am

in four years, you get tell the white people that their countries are equally shit!

also: singapore is a fascist butthole. at least here you have democracy.

  • 37. chareli  |  August 22nd, 2008 at 1:23 am

oh well. the sad truth about how the country looks like to some others. i just saw this video on youtube where they were also making fun of the country for trying to ban avril lavigne (haha, she’s so retarded now, she should be banned anyway.)

but it was kinda sad at how they poked fun at the country eventhough it was quite true.

    sigh.

anyways, HAVE FUN IN THE USA!
hahaha. love those suitcase photos! so cute! did you use self timer or get someone to take for you?

  • 38. egg mcmuffin  |  August 22nd, 2008 at 1:59 am

All the best in the States. Too bad you can’t shop here now. =p

  • 41. Jeff from LA  |  August 22nd, 2008 at 2:33 am

    Welcome to the US!

I know you’re already beginning the process of missing everyone, but remember, absence makes the heart grow fonder. You’ll be able to cherish your time with your friends even more when you see them in the future. Most importantly, by the time you come back home next, you’ll have a bunch of new friends.

Oh and good for you for being brave enough to go half-way across the world for school. I always wanted to do it, but I never was organized enough to accomplish it.

As for the expats, I hope you don’t see them as proper representatives of Americans. They always manage to send the most ethnocentric white people abroad. When I was in Asia, I hated every last white person I met there. If I had to judge white people based only on expats, I’m sure I would have a very negative view of white people.

  • 42. Jeff from LA  |  August 22nd, 2008 at 2:35 am

Of course, perhaps once you’re in the US, there will be a lot of things that you miss about Malaysia as well or think that Malaysia does better, so maybe you’ll understand the expats attitude better.

  • 43. AJ  |  August 22nd, 2008 at 5:56 am

    1. agree with jeff above. i was never particularly ‘proud’ of malaysia back home. once here, seems to get all ‘defensive’ abt malaysia. .weird..

    2. yes, i agree with the comment regarding the luggage lock. in fact, due to the hassle i did not bother to lock my luggage for the last 3 times i travelled in and out of USA - may not be a good idea though. do update yourself to the latest requirement.

    3. SELAMAT DATANG !

  • 44. ashley  |  August 22nd, 2008 at 7:32 am

update more bout ur life in US k? i enjoy reading ur posts =)

  • 48. Ping  |  August 22nd, 2008 at 8:53 am

short of time to read the post properly :-P but just thought of dropping a comment first.

1.don’t the australian lady sound a bit racist? hmm.. … gleneagles offer excellent service to everyone irregardless of their skin colour lo.

    2. O_O that is such a big luggage bag~ and the last pic a lil’ scary :-P. have fun packing =)

  • 49. vvens  |  August 22nd, 2008 at 9:59 am

and why is your dorm so small *_*

  • 50. caroline (xxx)  |  August 22nd, 2008 at 10:03 am

good luck and have a safe trip su ann, i’m sure you have an amazing year ahead of you. am flying back to manchester tonight for another year of working hard and playing harder. eat as much local food as you can, and enjoy your remaining time at home.

ps. i totally understand not being able to fit everything you would like to bring into your suitcase, am trying to tackle the same problem now, i have way too many pairs of shoes! xxx

  • 51. Michelle  |  August 22nd, 2008 at 10:15 am

You’re so crazy in those pictures! Hahahaha.

Anyway, it’s just four years. I’ll be here for six maybe more… Maybe, I’ll never be able to come back to KL. I feel that I have no roots here, sometimes. And yes, skype or msn is just not enough. It’s not enough when you’re not there. Like the blogger wildlife party. :(

I feel like I’ve missed so much and I do not know who and who is up to what… It’s like my friend suddenly had a boyfriend and I didn’t know about it till now… And then another one went up North to do training… Sigh. I can’t even attend farewells and antyhing!

Maybe this is a form of sacrifice.

  • 52. nickie  |  August 22nd, 2008 at 11:36 am

the angmohs really said those things? omg. well at least you’ve never had anyone ask you ‘is malaysia a country or what?’. -_-|| u take care of yourself okay. dorms are gonna be small, so don’t bring too many shoes and bags. i assure you, you’ll still wanna buy more when you get there haha!! bring somethg that is more sentimental, things that will remind you of all the happy times with your loved ones, thgs that you wont be able to buy in the US. :) bon voyage! have a safe trip, and enjoy every moment of your time! don’t spend too much time being sad okay babe! hugs.

  • 53. sheon  |  August 22nd, 2008 at 12:14 pm

i remember this phase……shopping for luggages, going for farewell parties, meeting up frens, eating all the ‘important’ food… but it wasnt me who was leaving, and it turned out she really did go on and never returned. hahahahah…you know the story.

aih…i thought you would’ve bought the hard case samsonite-like luggage? i would’ve gone for that if it’s me. :P

the mat sallehs are right about malaysia. tho all the politicians would rather be in a state of denial and have the face to claim that bolehland is on par with so many other civilized countries. what a shame. (and it takes a prime minister to figure out there’s something wrong with out train service, and after so long and soooo many promises made over a span of 10 years. and thats only the train, make him take the bus and see what he has to say!)

dear pinks, i’m sure you’ll find life more exciting there!!! and after a while, you’ll have sooo many great friends from all over the world…..

lets hope my plans for christmas ‘09 materializes…. and i’ll be snowballing you in the US.

  • 54. evelyncyl  |  August 22nd, 2008 at 12:19 pm

Wish u well in everything! :)

  • 57. peter  |  August 22nd, 2008 at 1:34 pm

I agree with all that Jeff from LA said. I hope you’ll find what I found on my expat experience– people are the same the world ’round (good, bad, smart & stupid, rich & poor), but it’s our individual cultural and personal differences that make people beautiful! I hope you appreciate your unique background as the wide world opens before you. And study hard!

Selamat Datang di US! Just wait until you try our pizza here! And bagels, pastrami, and clam chowder! You’ll find a whole new world of food, from cheesesteaks to cheesecakes.

  • 64. anonymous stalker  |  August 22nd, 2008 at 5:20 pm

    AJ

You’ll find that Malaysia is easier to love once you’re far away from it. All the things you usually whine about are gone, and you remember only the good things.

also: we have the best food in the fucking world. go ahead, tear up your malaysian passport, you’ll just condemn yourself to never eating awesome koay teow.. forever.

  • 65. sha  |  August 22nd, 2008 at 6:39 pm

just arrived ny. they confiscated my chicken flavored instant noodle. =(
i miss big apple. they don’t have it here.

  • 66. michellesy  |  August 22nd, 2008 at 8:19 pm

Good luck Su Ann and welcome to the next exciting phase of your life - tertiary education woot! =)

I am sure you’ll make the most out of your time in NY. Life is sweetest when it is most pregnant with possibilities, as yours is now.

I know you’ll miss your family and friends, and they’ll miss you too, but think - you’ll be able to fall into each other’s arms rapturously after a separation of months =)

“..in the FUCKING world. go ahead, TEAR UP your malaysian passport, you’ll just CONDEMN yourself…..”

what did i say? chill man!

  • 68. june  |  August 22nd, 2008 at 9:09 pm

and oh, do go check out abt the checked in luggage requirements, cos someone just told me that we can only carry 23kg for each baggage, and we cant combine the weight into 1 huge luggage. (: thought i should let you know!

  • 69. Mia  |  August 22nd, 2008 at 10:05 pm

I still remember cramming ALL my stuff into my luggage (which is almost as big as yours) before going to Australia to study. But in the end it got too damn heavy to even drag it out of the house lol. So I packed some of the heavier stuff into boxes (like shampoo etc) as it’s more convenient and all you do is check-in to baggage ^_^ American security/immigration is pretty tight too, don’t look suspicious and no liquids !

yea i know what you mean.. i feel sad and annoyed when people (especially if they were once malaysians) say things like ‘malaysians don’t know how to drive’ and complain about malaysia roads, politics etc.

tip from someone who had the same problem with packing:

sorry paupink… when i got to aaaaaaaaarhussssss, i went straight to the uni… bloody hell. first place no furniture in my room. so i’m at my second place now. it’s currently 11.15 pm and no self respecting danish would open to sell food at this ungodly hour. so for you, i shall eat chipsmore…

the thing about growing up is that there’s more things to do than just watch balls of fury or talladega nights, more people to meet than ah kow your best friend and more places to go than just toys r us. the tragic thing is that there isn’t more time in a day.

    Hey pinkpau

4 years will fly by. once you get settled into the hum drum of uni activities and hanging out with people there, 4 years will fly by in a blink. it’ll always feel the hardest when there’s a lull in between busy periods, but you’ll cope.

cheer up girlie. enjoy what is the best time of student years. i wish I enjoyed mine even more, and I loved my uni years.

it came to a point when i feel sad when i left UK for home during summer breaks, and sad again when i had to leave home for UK for a new uni term.

again, wishing you the very best. :) you have plenty of friends in the blogging world who will only be a click away. (it’s not the same i know…. but do cheer up…. it’s a new season; new adventures, new experiences, new sights - be excited.)
