Times Square Shines As Bright As You
September 10th, 2008
i woke up today to many long emails in my inbox, from friends and strangers alike, all offering encouragement, support and their own LDR success stories, following my comments-off post from yesterday. even till now the mails are still coming in. thank you :) i’m feeling so much better and a lot less lonely now. you all are so cool!
i loved reading the success stories the best, many of them about long years apart and finally ending in marriage, or high school sweethearts who are still together to this day. stories like these fill me with so much hope and encouragement. and it’s always so interesting to hear how different couples have navigated the arduous LDR process! webcams and skype are everyone’s best friend, it seems :D
today was a good day and i was kept reasonably busy. got caught in a sudden downpour at one point and missed a class because it was all the way at the other end of campus and i didnt have an umbrella. all my books got wet too :( i cant wait to go umbrella shopping and buy the cutest umbrella there is. and a pair of colorful wellingtons to splosh around in!
i also signed up to tryout for the Parliamentary Debate team here at college.. but i’m not sure yet if i like the american parliamentary style. it’s two-a-side and the opposition is unaware of the motion until the government start speaking. it’s a challenging format that displays excellent rhetoric, but at the expense of structure and in some cases, substance. oh wells, i will give it a shot anyway :) i’m going to be in my element because talking fast (something that i always gravitate towards despite harsh rebuke from previous trainers) in american parli is a good thing, but i already foresee myself having a big problem talking fast without segueing into Manglish. over here, they dont understand me when i speak with a Malaysian accent :( speaking in an American accent is fine, but it can be tiring. i dont know if i’m up to debating in a whole new accent..
and after a lot of thought, i decided not to write for any papers. i’m also going to do some form of dance, but i’m not sure which. either that or figure skating. or maybe equestrian. and i also signed up for the surfing club, hahaha! there’s no Malaysian club here so i joined the South East Asian League. oh and the Singaporean Club had a durian at their booth!!! i squealed and tried to eat it.
i also meant to take some photos of my campus to show, but the skies were so gloomy today. so, another time maybe. but for now i will show you pictures of Times Square!! it’s an amazing place with so much to see and do, and i will definitely be blogging more about Times Square when i have the chance to explore all its nooks and crannies!

#1 one of those ubiquitous hot dog stands

#2 hot dog with relish, kraut, ketchup and onions! yummm :D

#3 we went to watch Little Mermaid the Musical on Broadway. sigh! see my excited face!! i am swooning just recalling it. it is an excellent musical and adaptation of the Disney movie. trust me when i say the story is better than in the movie. and i say this despite the movie being my favorite Disney show of all time. will blog more about this soon, or maybe after i’ve watched a few more Broadway shows

#4 Times Square at night

#5 posing ala deodarant!

#6 this guy and his bunch of friends saw me doing that and started imitating me in their own photos. hahaha so funny. so i snapped a pic of him!

#7 and then we took a photo together!

#8 me and Martian :) stupid Bank of America sign bleached the whole photo red.

#9 in Times Square, even the subway station is lit up with neon signs..

#10 as well as the McDonalds!! even the police station here is done up in neon signs.

#11 EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE ^_________^

#12 Martian made me do this -_- apparently because i pout a lot in photos. YA MEH WHERE GOT

#13 ‘The TShirt’. only as common as the phrase “New York, New York”

#14 this spray paint artist (among many others) was doing such an amazing job. that piece of work on the table was done solely using spray cans, some round covers for the planets and a little piece of cardboard that he used to ’scrape’ out the outline of the buildings. so talented

#15 while we were watching the artist, suddenly all these cops started running past us O_O and running VERY quickly too! our first NYPD-in-action sighting!!! besides the men on foot, several cop cars quickly blocked all traffic at the intersection. just to nab this one woman in a tight black dress and heels. i was so impressed that they actually caught her! the above photo is them shoving her into their vehicle. i’m so curious to know what she did…

#16 back to being happy after the NYPD action was over

#17 i seriously wonder how much it costs to place an ad on that tall skinny building in the middle

#18 a totally accidental pose, i swear!!! Martian’s just very good at capturing moments

#19 but i’m better :D my favorite photo of the night.
okay gotta go! have to finish Italian homework. folks back home, please eat some mooncake for me!

do be strong eventhough Martian has left. If so many other people can go through it, I’m sure Pinkpau can! I dunno whether I myself am a LDR person because I have never gone through it. But yeah, we’re here for you!
I should get a mooncake soon. Totally forgot about it! @_@ Can you get mooncakes in NY?

15. sheon | September 10th, 2008 at 5:12 am
I LOVE NEW YORK!!!
hahaha…..looks like soo much fun there!!! downside is it costs at least rm6k for a return flight there. and at least a week off work, and 10K to survive. none of which i can afford.
16. bryanlyt | September 10th, 2008 at 5:35 am

17. thegeekinpink | September 10th, 2008 at 6:47 am

glad you’re feeling much better! be inspired and more spirited after all the success stories, k ;) i’m sure yours will be one too. just always always always believe… because i learnt the hard way that it’s one of the most important thing to keep the love alive with so much distance between us. we just have to believe and love with all our heart and have no doubts.
and haha the red man so layan you wan!
18. k0k | September 10th, 2008 at 7:13 am
do you know that the hey there delilah song is actually… quite stalker-ish? Higgenson, who wrote the song, actually fabricated his relationship with Delilah. He once met Delilah before writing the song, asking her out for a date - but she rejected him.
There’s even a parody song referencing this. Here’s a YouTube vid; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXlX5t1K6X0
I just started a LDR too :(
19. k0k | September 10th, 2008 at 7:18 am
p.s. u might want to ignore the vid and just listen to the song :D
20. Sarah | September 10th, 2008 at 7:45 am
That lady in the black dress and high heels might have been a prostitute…? But that does seem like a lot of policemen just for a streetworker. Who knows..
Anyhoo, looks like you’ve been having a fab time in New York! So jealous!
xox Sarah
21. Kiran | September 10th, 2008 at 8:18 am
Pinkpau,
Looks like you jelled into the NYC lifestyle. Good for you! And the pictures are great, keep them coming and good luck in your quest to look for the perfect umbrella ;)
22. carol | September 10th, 2008 at 8:21 am
ooh so my cousin and her husband (the genetics guy haha) did LDR for a grand total of 7 years. 7 seven qi tujuh!!! And from Kelantan to Oklahoma.. andddd to top it off, the early years were before the advent of emails/cheap idd cards. they *gasp* had to write letters! =P and could only see each other like… once a year! quote “airports become your best friend and worst enemy.”
but they got married 3 years ago =) now they’re mainly based in NY, but my cousin works in Massachusetts… it’s still amazing how they got through those 7 years!
you’ll be fine, pinkpau! ^^
p.s. don’t buy wellingtons/umbrellas/rainwear too soon! =P
p.p.s i. love. LOVE. LOVE. the dress you’re wearing!
p.p.p.s actually times square is not my favorite place haha. it’s just too full of.. humans. >.<
23. ah man | September 10th, 2008 at 8:26 am

27. Ams | September 10th, 2008 at 10:23 am
Take more pics of New York.. We want you to expose the city in its entirety! Some of us might never have the privilege of being there.. EVER! dammit you’re so lucky to be studying there
28. mak meleter | September 10th, 2008 at 10:49 am
ohh yuh stay up past 3 am again? i wuz hoping that new york will repair ur bad m’sian time sleep pattern.. now, i suspect u’ve more than just a circadian rhythm sleep disorder. does your college offer science of sleep? a BSc in sleep might just be the thing you need or at least you can sleep through it…zzZz..makcik meleter sampai berbuih2 mulut….’sleep is not a lifestyle choice but a biological necessity’
29. kreazi | September 10th, 2008 at 11:04 am
Wah that guy on the street super layan you ar! Hehehehehe.. and I like #12 not only because it’s my favourite number but also the fact that your pout is almost similar to the one in the window display! Hope you’re enjoying life in NY!
30. Jiayi | September 10th, 2008 at 11:19 am
Heylo, my first time leaving comment here. love ur blog, like the way you write =)

31. pinkshirtz | September 10th, 2008 at 11:19 am
That picture in the middle of new york looks like from Heroes (Hiro nakamura) and also like a scene from malaysia dreamgirls photoshoot. Interesting ….
Take care there …
32. hui wen | September 10th, 2008 at 11:39 am
I like picture #18 more! :P

33. clem | September 10th, 2008 at 11:53 am
that random guy imitating your pose is, well, for the lack of a better word, cool! always heart-warming imo when strangers are willing to interact with you in a fast-paced city.
34. nyrac | September 10th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
hello pau, it’s so nice to read your happy posts. gives me good vibes! me super stressed now. am so stressed that i have no appetite for the many selections of mooncakes i have in me hostel and also the uber padat chocolatey brownie in the fridge :( i got assessment tomorrow! wish me luck all the way from NY k. if i pass then i finish all the mooncakes and brownies on your behalf haha.
yea and your dress is so pretty, and i like the ala deodorant pic hehe.
35. entwined | September 10th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
you do pout in pics, but you look so cute doing it so don’t stop! :P glad you’re feeling better. if anyone can survive LDRs, i would think you and martian can, because you both are in love and matured and know what you want. :)
NY looks exciting :D i hope to be able to go there and gawk at the lights like a jakun tourist hahaha…but first comes the hard work to earn money T___T
the little mermaid is my favourite disney cartoon too!! must obtain a copy of it soon!
36. pinkpau | September 10th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
patricia : i actually prefer my mooncake yolkless, but right now i’m so desperate that i’ll pretend i like yolks!
jitty : wait till you see the neon police station.. haha
chareli : and i learnt that stupid in italian is stupido! haha. yes i can get mooncakes here but very expensive. USD 25 per box
KY : i knew you would say that! ya ok i will have my next hot dog for you. but actually it’s not that great wan.. just simple and (relatively) cheap
pinkyboo : haha yes i used to read overheardinnewyork! not anymore though. but now that i’m here, i may just follow it again!
skyler : LIES!
jared t : feel free to email me for tips and advice when you’re applying! i give good tips :D well the asians here are mostly asian-american; very few asians here actually came straight from their native countries prior to college. i’m one in the small handful. so i guess that means ive been hanging out with mostly americans!
sheon : eh if im not wrong u can find a flight that costs only 3k.. i dunno how my friend did it though. she bought from a chinatown here
bryanlyt : me neither, prior to this trip..
thegeekinpink : as always, you are so inspiring :) haha what you wanna see in NY? i go take photos for you
k0k : yup i know abt the song. i heard they later went out after she realized the song was about her, but it didnt work out. or something. all the best for your LDR! :) we shall share pointers and form our little support group..
sarah : but would they go to such lengths just to nab a prostitute? i mean like 5 of them were running past us, and another 3 were running from another street!
kiran : hehe i will find the perfect umbrella! and i will blog about it!
carol : walau your cousins really are super success stories! why dont buy soon? what if this week got rain =( eh is there such thing as desktop widgets for macbooks that will show me the weather?
ah man : hahaha thank u :P
thefauxfashionista : excuse to shop!! :D
evelyn : i will definitely do that :)
keong : they have funnier signs, especially the No Parking ones. “no parking except for 6-8pm on second fridays of the month, third mondays of the month and weekends”. or something like that :P
ams : i will try my best! :)
mak meleter : hahahaha cos i had homework ma..
kreazi : ya he very layan!
jiayi : martian la :( force me to take :(
pinkshirtz : heroes? hmm! was times square the place that got bombed? i dont remember liao
hui wen : why you like his picture more :((( i thought we girls gotta stick together! oh and what the movies dont capture about times square is the smell of dog pee on the sidewalks :P
clem : agreed :)
nyrac : omg all the best :( pls eat something when your assessment is over!
entwined : LIES! i dont pout :P ooh if you ever do come to NY, gimme a holler :) we’ll go out. and watch little mermaid the musical!!!
37. carol | September 10th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
pinkpau press f12 to bring up your dashboard which should already have a weather widget built in. “+” will give you more widget options. http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/ for more nifty widgets you can download!
you have unboxed it! did you take photos?!
38. Fu Han | September 10th, 2008 at 5:01 pm

39. yosie | September 10th, 2008 at 5:06 pm

40. martian | September 10th, 2008 at 5:52 pm
i think i had so much american food that i’m od’ing on local food now.
41. Michelle | September 10th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
Sigh. New York. A city of dreams.
It’s so cool. You’re staying on Broadway. If there’s one place I would love to go, it would be NY.
:D
Get a huge umbrella if the wind’s strong. In Melbourne, brollies are a necessity. The weather here is freaking weird. The winds can break your brollies, those retractable ones of course.
42. Artificially Tamtim | September 10th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
Avenue Q ftw of favouritest broadway musical. Will catch Wicked in Dec but it’ll have to put up a damn good fight if it wants to take away the title of best Broadway musical released in the last 10 years. Sorry… but hairspray just doesn’t cut it for me.
Come to London in Dec and we’ll catch Les Miz!!!
43. june | September 10th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
trust me, the little mermaid will definitely be the best. it’s Disney after all! i’m a little biased cos i’m a cast member of Disney, and coincidentally in Walt Disney Entertainment! okay, i guess that’s very biased. but hey, don’t we all love Disney? and it’s the year of a million dreams :D
44. foreverjas | September 10th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
i love new york lahhh. i wanna go! broadway! *admire*

45. grace / doen en :) | September 10th, 2008 at 8:38 pm

46. nickie | September 10th, 2008 at 8:47 pm

Thanks!
52. vvens | September 11th, 2008 at 6:06 am
why is their mcdonald so cool one? :(
53. michellesy | September 11th, 2008 at 6:49 am
Looks like you’re having a great time in the Big Apple Su Ann!
But then I knew you would, something about you being you, and your affinity for a big city with a cosmopolitan vibe (can it get any more cosmopolitan than NY I ask you!)
#16 is completely surreal - does it not look like a scene out of the inumerable movies featuring Times Square front and center?
As for #12, yes you do have that whole Brigitte Bardot pout thing going - unconsciously maybe hahah!
ps: You and Martian are going to be fine. Really. Truly. I know that you being in NY does not equate to him being in Sing/ HK, but if you want to be together, you guys will make it happen *hugs* Meanwhile, skype and webcamming sessions we come, damn the time difference hahaah!
pps: You’re not going to write for any papers? Really? But that would be such a waste, no? Or do you have too much on your plate already?
54. kellster | September 11th, 2008 at 8:19 am
it wold be redundant if i were to write just how gorgeous the sights are there !
*jealous*
but i do want to exclaim i adore the mcds !
most importantly babe , be strong. really it’s tough but i know you can pull it through, love :)
it’ll be tough the first few months, but im sure with your heart, you’ll settle right in and everyone would love u!

Great to see that you are really enjoying NYC!!! Am sure you would have a lot more interesting experience as time goes by… :)
On your LDR, I’m sure if both of you put the efforts together, it will turn out fine and great. Just have the strong belief in both of you! Wish you luck!!!
Your photos of NYC really make me miss it… Time is so flying…just counting, I have left NYC for 40 months already…shoot…time just flies by so fast..

64. k | September 12th, 2008 at 8:38 am
Hi Su Ann,
Your bit about LDRs really hit a chord. I’ve been in one for the past two years and counting, and the last time I saw him was 1.5 years ago. It’s not been easy but I believe that you have to want it bad enough for it to work… and seems like you and Martian do :)
All the best, and love New York with all your heart! I studied there for a while and it was truly amazing.
65. =) | September 12th, 2008 at 8:39 am
omg..NY looks so so good! Been thinking of going for Xmas and NYE and this post just makes me want to go NOW! Love the little mermaid and musicals too! MUST go!! Hope you have loads of fun there! and take the LDR one step at the time.. was in a LDR 4 years ago and we’re still together now…if that helps. ;)
BTW, Love the accidental pose!
66. chin | September 12th, 2008 at 11:57 am
hey su ann, after reading ur post, i wanna go US too..huhu!!
exciting to look at the pictures that u took.
67. kiasu andrew | September 13th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
WHY NOBODY COMMENT ABOUT DEBATING ONE! I WAITED BUT NO ONE COMMENTED T__T
68. winsern | September 14th, 2008 at 3:48 am
how much electricity does time square consume a night?
69. Chen Chow | September 14th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
So typically andrew…lol….
I would say that while the format is different, it is quite fun…..I din have much experience debate in US, except took 1 semester’s course on Debating…
Was quite enjoying it, but for me, it was just used as a practice to learn how to speak English…lol… I can’t remember what grade I got for that course though…A-/B+ or so…
I did that too when i was at Raffles. That time my English is even more koyak. So, basically just jot down those words that I barely understand, and then go home and check dictionary, and found some words, and some I would never know what they speak, since I jot down based on sounds that I understand… hehehe… quite memorable too…
on debate, ask Andrew.. :)
