Blue Skies and Pictures of College
September 14th, 2008
it is SO HOT today, i am practically melting into the floor. a bunch of us went for a picnic in Morningside Park nearby, but what little sunday morning enthusiasm we had was quickly worn out by the scorching sun. so we sat around playing some half-hearted frisbee (what is this Ultimate Frisbee thing?) and lazily debated the virtues of aspartame in a fake cola drink. then we trudged home. lazily.
pictures of my campus because the weather has been nice enough lately to produce some photos of vast blue skies!:

#1 this is a picture of College Walk, which is the quad area of the campus. i put my foot there to signify that i was in an elevated position! i was actually sitting on a really tall wall that has a statue at the end, under which is a secret spot of sublime shade and people-watching opportunity. actually it’s not very secret - lots of people love to sit and study under that statue. me included. my only gripe is that the statue isnt very pleasant to lean on cos it’s got all these painful statue-vertebra jutting out of it. and i also am always half afraid of falling off the wall :(

#2 from the other side of College Walk. that huge neoclassical building in the background is where that tall wall is

#3 and this is the building! it’s called Low Memorial Library, but it’s no longer a library. it’s an admin building now. it’s huge, prominent and smack in the middle of campus.

#4 people usually meet and hang out on the steps of Low cos it’s nice and sunny, and is right in the midst of everything. that’s good ol’ Alma, who also provides good shade!

#5 Low Steps when school started

#6 and this is Butler Library! i havent yet been in there, but from what i hear, come exam season and study breaks, people camp out at the doors so that they can secure a good study place. i think i will eventually have to join them in line, because the cafes around college are so busy that they dont really let you study in there, and the closest Starbucks has harsh lighting. i miss Starbucks Telawi, the most perfect study place on earth :(

#7 these are two of the residence halls! mine is the one on the right. the sky in this pic is so blue it’s surreal

#8 the lawns outside my hall. also a good place to sit and study. or sunbathe in bikinis, as many people have been doing. i’m not sure if this is common practice, because when i got here, already a handful of girls were laying out blankets and tanning in bikinis. so i thought this was normal (hahaha in Malaysia confirm kena suspend), and thought of doing the same to even out my tan, but then the other day i overheard a couple of people saying that people who tan on the green should stick to the beach. hmm! such confusing americanisms. but i’m learning.

#9 this is the Mathematics building, where i take my Econ and Calculus classes. buildings here are funny; they dont always open up to the first floor. the Math building opens to the third floor at ground level!

#10 and that’s Havemeyer, another building of classrooms

#11 The Lion, a symbol of Columbia. our collective athletic teams are called The Columbia Lions. our official color is a beautiful light sky blue :D

#12 the fountain at the quad, where Scarlett Johansson’s character was last seen contemplating a postgrad degree at Columbia in The Nanny Diaries. a little bit further up from here is Hamilton Hall, where i have my Italian classes, and also where the protest scene in Across The Universe (which is an amazing movie) was filmed

#13 spot the flag! :D this was taken during convocation (convocation here is not graduation, but is instead the welcoming of new students). i’m the only Malaysian international for this intake, though i’ve met two other Malaysian-Americans who mostly grew up here in the States.

#14 the Pupin building, which is wayyyyyy on the other end of campus, where i have my Literature Humanities classes. my Lit Hum teacher looks so much like Renee Zellweger…

#15 St Paul’s Chapel. it’s beautiful on the inside. behind it is Casa Italiana and beside it is Maison Francaise, though i forgot to take pictures of these two. from what i know, they function as some kind of mini Italian and French embassies on campus, where you can go to for information or research on both countries.

#16 the inside of St Paul’s

#17 more green. grass here is really different from back home.. you can sit on it and not get your bottom dirty or wet!

#18 the dining hall in my residence hall. i’ve discovered that the food’s not too bad! the other day they had chinese food… jasmine rice (but they put green peas in the rice O_O) and sweet and sour pork!!! the pork tasted just like what we get back home

#19 this was taken during a large Activities Fair on campus, where all the clubs, sports teams and societies would set up recruitment booths. i signed up for SO many mailing lists, but i still dont know what i want to do. i’ve shortlisted ballroom dancing, performing arts, figure skating, parliamentary debate (which has to be taken off the list because i decided not to go for the tryouts today :( sigh i immensely regret this), model united nations, political science group, the south east asian league.

#20 i followed it but didnt find anything absurd :\

#21 College Walk again. oh! that red brick building would be Maison Francaise

#22 the side of Low Library

#23 a really funny poster i saw on campus during activities recruitment week… hahahaha i laughed so hard
more to come soon! i havent actually explored very much of campus, but when i do, more pictures shall come. i really have so many things to blog about but i dont know where to start. not just about my new life here, but also things that are going on back home.
i’ve also been getting more and more emails regarding US college applications, and most of them seem to be asking the same questions about how to navigate the forms, how to write the application essays, and how to increase chances of admission into the Ivy League. so to any college applicants reading this, would you guys like me to write a walkthrough post on the whole entire process and also some tips and advice for essays and constructing your application? i give good advice :D leave me a comment if you do. if enough people want it, i’ll do the post.
okay, homework time :( i have another 3 calculus problem sets to finish.

Your campus is like so huge and green. My uni does not even got a proper campus with pagars and gates where all buildings crowd together. Envy to have such a Uni life

Haha. You should say “Pink Skyes and Pictures of youuuuuu, pictures of meeeeee”
LOL.
Anyway, the place you’re studying in looks so familiar. I bet they did a lot of filming here or something. The admin building really looks like the Pantheon!!!! Sigh. Such a lovely place you are in!
The vas deferens joke is just lol. Limited to bio students. Haha.

9. yosie | September 14th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
wow columbia looks so nice. i don’t know if any pictures could make my public uni look as nice as this one, but we did also have a lawn with sunbathing/tanning ladies during warm sunny days. i’m surprised people queue up to get in the library, no one did that at my uni, although it was open 24 hrs during finals week.
10. nyrac | September 14th, 2008 at 7:35 pm

20. naeboo | September 14th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
i think most american buildings have basements for use as bomb shelters and also store food or whatever during winters thats why they dont open to first/ground floor. or for some reason, they like having all their piping and electrical stuf in the basement.
so lucky of u not to have msian classmates so u wont get shit like ppl gossiping u back all the way home. and not to be bothered with ppl talking abt u being lansi dont hang with fellow msians too. (sgporeans arent much better. in fact, they are worse haha) this way can have more diverse variety of frens from everywhere!
21. Manya | September 14th, 2008 at 10:43 pm

your campus is so gorgeous :) and i would LOVEE. LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE you to write a walkthrough, please please please please please with a huge cherry on top :)
and ultimate’s a relatively new sport in msia. a lot of colleges have it. ALL my friends are in it competitively, but i have to admit, once you start playing, it gets very addictive. and speaking from experience, you’ll get hit at least twice before you get the hang of the game.
46. chareli | September 15th, 2008 at 2:56 am
YOUR CAMPUS IS SO GORGEOUS!
everything looks so rustic and gives out such an “academic” vibe. hahaha. I would love to study there. It’s so different from my campus here in UNSW, Sydney where everything’s modern.
Ultimate frisbee is a frisbee game isn’t it? Something like Captain’s Ball. I played it in Singapore before. =D
Sorry to be so blur, but what uni are you in again? haha!
47. louis | September 15th, 2008 at 3:07 am
Ultimate Frisbee has been widely played in malaysia too :), if you’re back and you want to play, there are pickups in around KL and PJ. The one that a lot go to is at Kolej Bandar Utama, opposite centerpoint, wednesdays at 5 and saturday mornings!

50. kreazi | September 15th, 2008 at 4:28 am
Really envy, man! You got such marvellous campus. Too bad I only studied in local uni. You wouldn’t want to know how it looks like, I swear!!!
51. pinkyboo | September 15th, 2008 at 5:25 am
U know what, reading your blog makes me feel like I wanna go back to being your age (I’m 27 now, eeek). You’re at that age where anything is possible. You’re at a good place now - going into an ivy league, experiencing a new life, meeting fresh faces - you are very very lucky to be where you are right now in your life. I cant help but feel, whoa this girl has so much that she can dream about!! When you’re my age, life is very very different and you’ll secretly wish you knew how to appreciate life back in your early twenties. Anyways…..I think you should do that walk-through post so that others can get some good tips from you. Its so crazy how you’re the only Malaysian in your intake…..I mean, how do you feel about it? Even if I dont know you personally but I’m like, damn I’m proud of this young girl!! :)
52. sheon | September 15th, 2008 at 5:27 am
thats a kick-ass campus you have there. too old to apply for columbia dy, i’ll just get my masters done here locally. sigh.
53. Ann Jie | September 15th, 2008 at 5:37 am
HAHA write to me only about US college apps don’t write on your blog!
just kidding lah hahaha anyway! i got really excited with i saw nanny diaries in your post cos that’s one of my favourite movies. yes i can totally remember that scene! and then she opened the letter from Mrs X right! (scarly i wrong haha) aww you’re the only malaysian international? ;( but in a way, that is so cool as well. it’s kind of like they put the malaysian flag there for you.
54. kitkat | September 15th, 2008 at 5:38 am
OMG! Your school is awesome! I think you’ve made a right choice after all! This post really propelled me to work even harder on my application, especially on the essays.
I am sure that most of the people who know you would be proud of you since you’re the only Malaysian who got admitted into Columbia this semester. *cheering pinkpau*
And, it would be of great help to all US universities’ applicants if you could write a walkthrough of the US unis application!
Thanks…
55. sieutheng | September 15th, 2008 at 6:12 am

Why… thats just absurd !!!!!!!!

61. michellesy | September 15th, 2008 at 7:54 am
Props for Su Ann being the only Malaysian international student in the 2008 intake! =)
How gorgeous is the campus, and the architecture? The interior of St Pauls is particularly lovely - so sumptuous and baroque-looking!
And the blue skies are so…….blue hahahah.
Y’know people tend to think of Columbia U as having a fairly urban campus (not in terms of its location, but in terms of the campus itself?), would you say yea/ nay to that Su Ann, as you have first-hand experience? =)
#23 - Hahahah, vas deferens! Witty - me likeys =)
62. wenqi | September 15th, 2008 at 8:04 am

oh well. if i get the chance to visit u, u must take me on a campus tour ok! and if i knew the lion was a symbol of columbia i’d have put columbia as my top choice instead of duke hahaha…

hi, it’s me again. The pictures are fantastic! I am so jealous! the campus and the beautiful surroundings, the perfect campus environment. you can’t find those kind of campus in malaysia. your campus can’t be compared to mine. mine’s like a factory building, two stories high. no gardens, no gym no nothing. It’s one of the most famous, MCA financed university in PJ. Hmm, i’m so jealous. wonder when it’s my turn to get there..
69. pinkshirtz | September 15th, 2008 at 10:00 am

74. makcik nostalgic | September 15th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
Jalur Gemilang is such a lovely sight to behold in standing proud with the other flags. So refreshing to the eyes and soul, admist the constant barrage of ugliness & chaos back home. For just a moment, I believe and hope once again.
75. N | September 15th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
Wow, Su Ann.. Your campus is very nice indeed. You look happy over there. Hehe. =)

Hey Su Ann!
would really appreciate your advice on applications to US colleges.
the essay is killing me right now
arghhhhh
77. CraSH | September 15th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
columbia it is! cool.. i am sure you will have a great 4 yr education there. and you made it! i am sure it is a tough nut to crack on the application… but it is doable….
all applications into ivies takes some work because they use them as a tool to screen and deter those half ass students…
i am not sure how much columbia’s mba cost, but whartons was about 100k 7yrs ago. and a 250k loan should covered 2yrs being in school full time then. its a good investment.. so be prepared to bleed like crazy in the begining, but you reap the benefits later down the road.
78. carolyn | September 15th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
that is a very nice campus! now i wish im still at your age too! =D
79. mei yueh | September 16th, 2008 at 1:33 am
At least you know your way around campus.. I’m still lost after the International Student Orientation. =_= But I’ve like another days of orientation, so hopefully by then I’ll figure out my way. Or more likely, go in a group and then learn. =D My classes start on 22nd Sept. Then I’ll be drowning in homework too.. =(
All the best in Columbia. ;)

Pleaaaaaaase walk us through with the uni applications! I am now in Taylors ADP, I know you used to go there too. The admin has totally changed- no more Ms Sharifah, Ms Alice and etc; all we have now is Mr Guna and Ms Tina.. WELL. I don’t really want to elaborate but this is pretty self explanatory, isn’t it?

“grass here is really different from back home.. you can sit on it and not get your bottom dirty or wet!”
YES YES YES YES YES i couldn’t agree more! i cannot imagine sitting on grass here in Malaysia! Omg when spring/summer first came around my favorite activity was to nap on the grass at bryant park.
and yes to the walkthrough, on behalf of my 16-yr old sister!

VAS DEFERENS!
and maybe you’re sitting on turf, which is why its cleaner. universities like to have picture perfect grassy lawns and just before the new academic year begins, you can see big rolls of old grass carpets being replaced by new grass carpets.
ps. i secretly used to think ULTIMATE frisbee was people playing frisbee while shouting ‘Ultimate’. How ridiculous is that?

Hey! I’m from New York City and I can tell you that NYC is very safe during the “normal” hours. But after 11:30pm, take a cab if you can.
NYC will get cold soon so enjoy it for the time being.
Have you made visit to Central Park? 5th Avenue? East Village?

106. just curious | September 18th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
Congratulations on getting accepted into Columbia. Just curious if you did apply to any of the HYPMS? My first choice is Stanford and I know my chances are pretty slim. Sigh!

It would be great if you could share with the students. It would definitely help a lot more Malaysians, and hopefully that would be able to help increase the number of Malaysians who would apply and get into their dream universities.
Thanks in advance for your effort to help fellow Malaysians!
