is it possible to find true love at a Halloween party? maybe somewhere among this throbbing, snaking, complex mess of bodies and nerves, lies a heart – big, red and protected; needing air, needing me. or maybe not. maybe there are no hearts left in this world, and everything needs nothing. i’ve spent two hours here so far. there are boys rubbing their hands all over me and grinding their uninvited bodies against mine. i shimmy uninterestedly, occasionally smacking roving hands away. the alcohol is bubbling nicely to my head. i feel happy. i feel angry that he hasnt called. i sing along loudly to that silly American Boy song. i take many pictures with fellow sailor girls. but all the while, i’m keeping an eye out for my true love. my The One. there is an infinite expanse of quiet within me each time i survey the room. and suddenly i spot this one guy. he’s Julius Caesar, sitting at the bar alone, complete with leafy garland-upon-head. he’s kinda chubby, but intense – i can see it in his eyes. he’s also nice – i can see it in his hands. briefly, i am mesmerized. i contemplate going up to talk to him, but there seems to be barricade after barricade of sweaty humans in between us. nothing meant to be is ever this difficult. and so i turn around, back to Pirate Guy who seems pretty intent on protecting me from other guys although we don’t even know each other’s names, and back to Pretty Korean Boy With Chest Hair. party! at 3am i turn around to find Caesar gone. he’s left. nothing meant to be is ever easy.
people always say, boys will be boys. i begin to reflect on the truth in that statement as i am groped at for what feels like the millionth time that night. as i watch eager couples – strangers to each other just an hour ago – make out against the wall like mating spiders, i wonder if the girls have boyfriends. and if the boys have girlfriends. is it possible to find true love at a Halloween party? conversely, is it possible to lose true love at a Halloween party?
the Pope, however, was very blessed with the ladies that night:
many more Halloween pics to come :) i was a sailor girl this year!
