Liberty, London and Tubers
December 3rd, 2008
some thoughts, before my descent into the pits of final exam-induced hermitage:
i cant believe half of my freshman year is going to be over in a matter of two weeks. isn’t it crazy? life here still feels like an extended holiday. sometimes i catch traces of a make-believe world in my daily undertakings – like realizing too late that i bought toiletries in small quantities once again, and that i wrote my KL address and phone numbers on yet another sign-up sheet.
my brain is also stuck back home in a system where it’s easy to score A’s and one is taught that all battles can be fought with the perfected art of regurgitation. i’m trying my hardest not to make this an excuse for doing badly, but my hardwiring definitely still bears the distinct marks of a malaysian craftmanship. despite my best efforts at abstaining, i still keep fretting over using all the ‘right keywords’ when i’m writing my econs essays, cos back home it doesnt matter what blather you write, just so long as all the kata-kata kunci are there, right. i keep thinking that if i write anything that’s even a slight deviation from the textbook, i’ll get penalized.
and the math.. dont even get me started on the roundabout ways they study math here. for some inexplicable reason, merely getting the answer or knowing how to get it isn’t enough – you also have to understand all the laws and theories behind how you get all the answers, and you have to know how to prove these laws and theories. take a look at my extra credit assignment and you’ll see what i mean. sigh. if anyone wants to help me with my extra credit assignment, you are more than welcome to!!! in fact, i beg of you to help me; i would love you forever. i dont even know where to start in answering those impossible questions. i showed aira, the number one math genius in my life, and even she went like ‘whoa’. and didnt wanna help me >=(
speaking of math, i called my mom the other day and asked her not to be angry if i get a bad grade for calculus. or a fail, even. but she pish-toshed my request, and said that i shouldnt be making myself unhappy by doing all these things that i didnt like doing. and that i should give myself some room for a little bit of imperfection every now and then. it was very comforting. after that i skyped my dad, who scolded me for staying up so late to do homework. sometimes i think my brothers and i have the coolest parents ever; they give us complete liberty in steering our lives in any direction we want. it’s not the best child-raising policy – and i have good reason to suspect that they only serendipitously stumbled upon this formula that just so happens to work – but it’s been the best thing to ever happen to me. i’ve never had to live with the fear that any sudden movement is going to cause my parents great despair or disappointment, and this peace of mind has given me so much room to pursue the things that i truly like and make me happy. it’s also accelerated my maturity and broadened my horizons because i’m simply.. allowed to take on the world. with my parents, i’m not cloistered. i’m never stifled.
when i was three years old and got my first box of crayons, my parents never once yelled at me when i drew on the walls at home. and now that i am 20 and still drawing on metaphorical walls with metaphorical crayons, they’re still not yelling at me. even when everyone else is judging or nagging. and that’s why no matter what impossibly difficult crap i have to go through, and despite what stupid decisions i make in life, i still know that underneath all the turbulence, i will always find love within the walls of my home.
ah. home. i miss it so much. nick, a fellow malaysian who’s a sophomore here at columbia, told me the other day that i have way too much emotional baggage and that my heart is still stuck in malaysia. it’s true; i won’t even bother denying it. having said that, after a whole month of anguished pinging and ponging back and forth, i’ve finally decided to go to London for winter break, instead of going home. it will be good for me, on many levels.
so, London folks! hit me up if you wanna meet! i’ve got a whole month to kill over on your side of the world, from the 19th of December up till the 14th of Jan. though i wont be in London all the time, because i’m definitely dropping by Nottingham and Cambridge (possibly Manchester and Liverpool) to meet up with some friends, and will most probably be spending 1-2 weeks in neighbouring Krakow, Paris and Barcelona. no fixed plans, just a lot of possibilities, but drop me a line anyway :) i’m already so. very. very. excited about London. or England in general. is it really as magical as Enid Blyton makes it sound?
and before i delve back into my pile of books, i will leave y’all with a picture of something awesome i discovered over Thanksgiving. behold, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, only the best culinary accident to ever happen:

it sounds weird, but oh, trust me.

Wow! Those extra-credit questions are tough! Good luck!
About being homeland-sick, well I can share the same sentiments when I first left for US. You would be fine, since London is awaiting for your arrival! :D enjoy your trip!

“3. The logistic dierential equation is
dy/dx = y(1-y). . Solve the equation (fjnd y as a function of
x) and discuss its history and relation to population dynamics.”
“6. Are there more irrational numbers or rational numbers? Describe what “more” means.”
Seriously pinkpau, if I were you, I would write on the paper: “what the fuck?”

alamak…it’s so impossible!!…what extra credit?? sounds more like ‘extra torture techniques’ !
i suppose, to some nutty math professors who eat, drink, sleep and breathe math, they dont mean harm. it is probably their idea of fun?!
:>(
11. mac | December 3rd, 2008 at 4:05 am
yuck, the maths that is … trying to solve these sort of problems can scar a person for life
some parts of england still so enid blyton … and harry potter
12. pinkyboo | December 3rd, 2008 at 4:21 am
london for winter break sounds like a perfect getaway from all that math craziness. Enjoy and take lotsa pics for us! :) And go crazy in Topshop! Teehee.
13. Michelle | December 3rd, 2008 at 5:08 am
You should try mashed sweet potatoes with plain yogurt. It’s like having sweet potato with ice cream. :D
14. DolphyN | December 3rd, 2008 at 6:52 am
to reallybites: i think the 4seasons roast duck only tastes so damn good cuz as malaysians living in Englishland, we are so deprived of anything that remotely resembles our local food that we just go ‘OMG THIS IS THE BEST DUCK RICE EVER’ the moment we take our first bite. Thats what happened the first time i had the 4 seasons duck rice anyway. Heh.
Then i went back the 2nd time, and then the 3rd time…and somehow the magic disappeared and my friends and i found ourselves thinking that NOTHING beats our malaysian duck rice. Period.
and suann, drop by Newcastle if u can!!!!! I’ll be glad to bring u around. we could go open air ice skating!!!! Hehe.
15. chm | December 3rd, 2008 at 8:33 am

16. Alex | December 3rd, 2008 at 9:29 am
gee, those math questions really bring back (bad) memories of my 1st year calculus. Even the font and questions look eerily similar to what I used to get. I wonder if they use the same textbook ^_^
At least they tore down that lecture theatre for all the headaches it caused me, to make way for a law building :p
17. Alvin | December 3rd, 2008 at 10:26 am
Come over to Southampton if you’re interested! =)
18. ZeekNotGeek | December 3rd, 2008 at 10:38 am
wow. crazy maths questions!! anyways, london’s a metropolitan place,..you;ll see more foreigners than English themselves. weird! Paris is beautiful and krakow,.. ive heard so much of it. Nice place. It is very traditional and vintage in Europe. Though i prefer the US more.. places like SF, LA and NYC. Enjoy your holiday anyways…
19. LJY | December 3rd, 2008 at 11:05 am
I will also be going to England during that time. :O
16th to 23rd dec.
So we will be 2 malaysians in England for what I assume to be the first time? (from the way you speak of it, it sounds like it’s your firs time. :p)
it’s my first time so i’m excited!
20. Sze | December 3rd, 2008 at 11:12 am

I lived in Notts and spent a lot of time in Cambridge (it’s too cold to punt, but one of the things to do!), so I hope u will enjoy it as much as I have. :)
And no, it’s not that magical – as I have come to discover. :( My brit friends laughed at me at the mention. But England is still very impressive nonetheless. :) xx

london! exciting! i’ll be making that trip to vienna, but not budapest :( in exchange, i’m covering off on bratislava, stockholm and copenhagen <- bf’s dream city, then back to germany
cheers to european winter holiday vacations :)
24. CMC | December 3rd, 2008 at 2:32 pm
London welcomes you, Su Ann. Though we’ve got the biggest city shopping mall in Europe -Westfields (perfect for boxing day shopping), Oxford is too good to be missed! Oh, and check out Time Out London for events listings etc. Have fun, and good luck for your finals! :)
25. xiao | December 3rd, 2008 at 2:53 pm
I dread the prospect of math :(
On the other hand that looks delicious oO Where do you find that and who on earth made it!
26. mint | December 3rd, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Heya, london eh? I hope it wouldn’t disappoint you, considering everything is so bloody old anyway. I’m going back to Malaysia for winter break and will be back in London on the 5th Jan. Would you like anything from Malaysia? I don’t know, milo? Let me know if you do.
You might want to go to Hyde Park. They have the Christmas market thingy going on till 4th Jan. Have some mulled wine to warm you up while you’re there. Check out Westfield if you like. Truthfully, since we have our Pavilion and 1U back home, westfield is nothing to us.
All the best for your exams and please bring an umbrella with you.

28. reader | December 3rd, 2008 at 7:06 pm
i just read ur hongkong guide, may i know which shopping mall in hongkong has H&M?
29. radiance | December 3rd, 2008 at 8:02 pm
#28. reader: i just got back from hong kong last week and had such a huge blast buying random things at h&m. the biggest one should be the one in central.. on the way heading to the mid-levels escalator, if i’m not mistaken. just walk on after u see a huge Coach store on your left. the Central one is abt 3-4 storeys :D there’s another one in Langham Place, Mongkok.. quite alot of stuff but they only have a really small men’s section. :)
30. judy | December 3rd, 2008 at 9:09 pm
i’m also one of the msian studying in england.. read ur blog quite frequent tho.. er.. if u coming to manchester, we could hang out.. not christmas tho.. i’ll be in scotland!! anyway.. u;ll have fun with the sales going on that time.. good luck on ur maths thingy!!
31. kennysia | December 3rd, 2008 at 9:53 pm
oh ya the 4seasons roast duck. frankly speaking, it was no big deal. like dolphyn said, it tastes good only because it is authentic hongkong roast duck and most students studying there in london miss the food from home. hehe. personally i thought it’s just above average. you’ve had better roast duck at the midlevel elevators in hk i’m sure.
spend more time in paris. us museum nerds will like it better. :) and download the ricksteves podcasts (www.ricksteves.com) before you go.
32. pinkpau | December 3rd, 2008 at 10:13 pm
ktikat : wrong!! :( if i went home i wouldnt be emo. actually, i wouldnt be emo in both london and KL, but having to choose between the two definitely made me emo. omg sales days and i dont go well together.. i’m not aggressive enough to rebut with crazed shoppers :|
shaolintiger : ok if i visit liverpool ! eh but your mum doesnt stay in liverpool right
kiran : i will :) thank u!
grouchy : shame on you. your lamest comment ever. minus one point for you
kennysia : I KNOW RIGHT… but i want my extra credit………
gin : really ah! then u do for me la! :D
reallybites : i definitely intend to check out four seasons
patchi : i knowww but it’s just a goooood marriage of textures mm mm. apparently sweet potatoes + brown sugar is a popular thanksgiving combo as well
kiasu andrew : androooo behave!
makcik : crazy right… sigh
mac : good :) i cant wait for london
pinkyboo : see how la if it’s cheap then i’ll go crazy :D
michelle : i dont really like yogurt :\
dolphyn : really? i hear it’s better than any roast duck in HK and malaysia.. better than HK u know!!! it must be really good for ppl to say something like that. nvm when i get there i will pass my verdict :P i actually do have a couple of friends in newcastle.. so if it’s cheap to travel there and i have time, i will go!!
chm : haha geez
alex : hahahaha i LOLed at your font remark. where did you go to school?
alvin : if i have time i wanna do this england tour thing :D
zeek : i will :) thank u!
LJY : yup it’s my first time. i’m excited as well !
sze : szeee! i’d love to meet up but 26-30 are my tentative dates for krakow. will buzz u if that turns into the dates for paris instead :)
lydia : oh no :( but i shall keep my hopes up!!
honeybunny : THANK U!!! :D but actually i knew the answer to that one oredi. that and number 3 is the only one i know how to do
yosie : nooooo budapest is so much cooler than vienna. according to me anyway :P it’s the other way around for martian. omg u must tell me all about bratislava, stockholm and copenhagen!
cmc : i cant waittttttt. i actually dont know anyone who goes to oxford right now, so i dont plan to visit. will check out this westfields place on boxing day but i’m just going to spectate :) i dont fare very well on big sales days, haha. thank u for the well wishes!
xiao : it was during thanksgiving dinner! we bought it from freshdirect. it’s apparently a very common thanksgiving food
mint : omg i want so many things from malaysia.. will you bring my friends family and martian back for me please :( im going to hyde park for sure. will check out westfields since some of my friends have mentioned it ! yes i heard about the umbrella.. and rain boots :P
xxx : how do i let you know! you didnt leave an email or name..
reader : the only H&M i go to in hongkong (and that i actually remember seeing) is not in a mall. it’s on queen’s road central, in central (chung wan). not hard to spot :) it’s further up the road, closer to the soho/mid levels escalator side rather than the prince building side.
judy : i’m most probably not heading to manchester because my friends from there are coming over to london, but i’ll buzz you if i do end up making the trip! :)
kenny : but then right… some of my friends told me that 4 seasons is better than HK roast duck. quite unbelievable right!! i mean i’ve had some pretty good roast duck in HK.. yung kee and others. hmm. curious, curious. see how la :) planning to spend a week in paris, but if i do that i’ll have to go alone cos most of my friends are going back early january. haih!

hi su ann! My bf and I are planning a trip to KL over the Xmas hols and I am just wondering if you have any hotels to recommend? I have read reviews but can’t decide on one! Jus wanted to hear yr opinions!
=)
Good luck for yr exams!
35. pinkpau | December 4th, 2008 at 4:15 am
michelle : haha ya i have marshmallows + ice cream quite often. actually come to think of it i’ve had mmallows with frozen yogurt too.. so i guess thats kinda like what you were talking abt
xinhui : what’s your budget and preferred location? also, what kind of lodging are you looking for? inn-types, hotels, dorms etc?
36. vvens | December 4th, 2008 at 4:53 am
how do they taste like? i am hungry and wants to try it. haha.must be very sweet!
37. gypsy | December 4th, 2008 at 5:18 am
Ah…Maths…I am never good at maths…always prefer Language tho now i am studying in a complete different field a.k.a Marine Science.
Owh btw, I think it’s perfectly alright to miss home. You’re all the way in the States and that is freaking far. Tho I am only studying in Sabah, only 2 and half hours by flight, I miss home. ALL the time.
So, i think nothing is wrong with being homesick no matter how long you’re in some other places.
Anyway, enjoy your London trip. Will like to hear all about it.
38. xinhui | December 4th, 2008 at 6:27 am
I am looking at hotels… four days three nights.. around three to four hundred for three nights? I was considering swiss hotel =)
39. fatcat | December 4th, 2008 at 9:02 am
ahhh, columbia’s marking system sounds like the one my school uses. we have to get every single step and keyword right before we get the marks. :(
that’s why most people who don’t study their textbooks for exams fail. but since textbooks are my best friends, i don’t have a big problem with this. haha. :P
40. mint | December 4th, 2008 at 10:07 am
A friendly reminder: Always stand on the right on escalators. You don’t want to get yelled at, especially at tube stations. Please visit Covent Garden, have a long lunch and enjoy the street performers.
You might wanna try fish and chips and eat it the traditional way. I know the best one somewhere near covent garden. I can’t remember the name though. If you like, I could check it out for you.
Boxing Day sales are insane, people actually start queuing up at 4.30 am. So that actually makes u wonder, “Credit crunch? Whot?”
Oh btw, remember uk has this 14 days rule thingy, where you would be fully refunded if you change your mind. My friends have been fully abusing this. They “buy” party dress and refund/exchange it within 2 weeks. Then again, it’s our statutory rights, innit?
41. linus | December 4th, 2008 at 10:54 am
hey pinkpau! :)
i’ve actually been lurking here for some time but this is my very first comment, haha.
i was just wondering if you’re on a scholarship in columbia?
42. leech | December 4th, 2008 at 11:09 am
hey! just wanted to tell you and your reader that there’s a H&M in Langham Place in Mongkok. I don’t know the exact location though, but those who are digging around to find the factory outlets will definitely chance upon the place. :]
have fun in London! once upon a time, i voted “yes” for Martian to take you to UK… =P
43. desmond-t | December 4th, 2008 at 11:59 am
it will very soon before you realize u actually gonna graduate..
after freshman, sophomore…woots final exam then working life!
44. Alex | December 4th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
Oh, me graduated from Sydney Uni :)
45. Sabrina | December 4th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
I feel for you…I have no idea how to do my extra credit problems too. Mine has stuff like calculus and criminology, balancing a block, Gaudi’s upside down scale model of the Sagrada Familia cathedral etc =p
46. lydia | December 4th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
how do you prepare the sweet potatoes and marshmallows? do you roast them or steam them together?? i actually saw this being served in one of the episodes in Chuck, a tv series, where it was a character’s favourite thanksgiving dish. it looked delicious! *drool*
47. chareli | December 4th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
yikes! your extra credit assignment looks somewhat like math mixed up with philosophy.
very. very. daunting.
good luck though!
and yes! how do you prepare the dish?
hahaha, i identify with how you feel over adaptation from malaysia’s academic system. i too had LOTS of trouble when first faced with singapore’s system right after spm. geez.
48. sheon | December 4th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
i cant even understand the calculus questions. hahahaha…. tho i took a few semesters of calculus back then, but i am sure it was not even remotely close to what you are getting there!!!
gonna be in hk for a week for new year countdown!! and will watch the fireworks from the balcony of my hotel in tsimtsachui. :) gonna use your earlier post on hongkong as a guide…but any other tips that you can share??….hehehehe….
49. sha | December 4th, 2008 at 10:13 pm
i was complaining the entire weekend abt my extra credit assignments but now i like mine more. watch a movie, read a book, write a 2 page paper. =x
50. Tyris Q | December 4th, 2008 at 11:48 pm
good that u can confide in your parents. i never had that. always had to do things my way and had to be as secretive as i can. even if i’m not doing wrong.
51. Honeybunny | December 5th, 2008 at 12:21 am
honeybunny : THANK U!!! :D but actually i knew the answer to that one oredi. that and number 3 is the only one i know how to do
—————————————————————-
Yeh I solved 6 and 3 also. The rest… fuck it. xD
The thing about American education system, at the end all the grades are ‘curved’ based on an average anyways. Like you mentioned before, 60% for your midterm is considered an “A”.
As long as you show effort, you’ll get a good grade ! >:O
52. Lyka G | December 5th, 2008 at 3:09 am
i was wondering a bit why you decided to go on a euro trip rather than be with your family back home in malaysia. and speaking of marsian, how are you both doing? i’m hearing less and less of him. are you both in an official “cool off” mode?
53. nisa | December 5th, 2008 at 5:02 am
walaa! that reminds me of my biometry class which i took last semester. daym hard.
have you ever thought about doing a discussion for it with your friends? (i can`t study math, alone. it gives me a headache, every freakin time!)
54. ida | December 5th, 2008 at 8:35 am
OMFG. Your extra credit ass (pun intended) stumped me. And to thing I’m a computer science graduate! Looking at the ass made me feel incredibly stupid! It’s like they’re asking if a = b and b = d and c-d = a, what would c b? WTF.
I wldn’t have graduated if I was in Columbia.
55. tzeching | December 5th, 2008 at 11:26 am
email me! notts to visit me right /shy
56. ven | December 5th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
London is definitely not magical but old, filthy and wet. Well, that’s what make London uniquely London.
By the way, traveling within UK is not that cheap. Train tickets cost a bomb. It’s cheaper to fly than to take the train at times.
57. L.vo | December 5th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
Don’t wanna discourage you but I look around me and wonder if there’s anywhere else in the world with weather worse than here? (ok, that’s insensitive cos there’s like Siberia etc, but you know what I mean.)
Don’t wanna sound geeky (ok that’s pointless cos I am) but those calculus questions are the sort that would make my weekends! in particular i am intrigued by the question 6.
but have fun when you’re here! gimme a buzz if you’re free / remember who i am! :)
58. pinkpau | December 5th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
vvens : not really actually..! cos the sweet potato is slightly salty
gypsy : will DEFINITELY blog abt london :) perhaps even more than i blog about new york.. i havent been poking around the city as much as i’d like.. and when i do, i feel too stressed out by the workload to blog abt it :(
xinhui : hmm swiss? is that swiss garden or swiss inn? also consider somerset serviced apartment/hotel which is located in bukit bintang.i really like somerset :) hmm.. there’s also cititel and boulevard hotel near mid valley megamall.. the former is cheaper but drabbier. check out the rates for those and see if they suit you
fatcat : no no columbia does NOT go by that system.. malaysia does! i’m still stuck in that system which is why i spend ages doing my assignments and exams here.. very inefficient and unncessary :(
mint : you mean fish & chips with vinegar, right? haha it sounds awful. but i will give it a try anyway. haha i was thinking the same thing about the black friday sales here in new york; sure doesnt seem like the country is in recession. as for the return policy, we have the same thing here too, but sometimes they only give store credit instead of cash refunds.
linus : why? are you planning to apply to columbia?
leech : unfortunately martian isnt going to be with me in london. haih :( so susah payah everyone leave 200 comments for me… in the end he’s not taking me also :(
desmond : i know! it’s a scary thought
alex : ah! a good school :)
sabrina : you’re doing architecture? zomg that’s so cool…
lydia : haha gossip girl talked about it too. you just boil the sweet potatoes, then when they’re done, you drain them and put the marshmallows on top while the potatoes are still hot! you can have some salt and pepper on the potatoes too
chareli : see above comment! ei singapore system and malaysian one very similar, yes? just that they’re more hardcore
sheon : omg so luckyyyyyyyyyy. please take some nice pictures of hk food for me! haha what other tips you want
sha : gawd. let’s trade
tyris q : i find that sometimes parents have to be reached out to little by little. so maybe if you took baby steps? would that work?
honeybunny : i have a feeling i’m not exactly at the apex of the curve :|
lyka g : you must either have selective sight or are extremely busybody – i just blogged abt martian two posts down. and he just spent loads of money coming to new york twice over the past couple of months.. i cant really expect him to keep spending so much time and money just to be with me. not that i owe you an explanation for it. “cool off” period indeed.. bajeezus
nisa : haha you are the 2nd khairunnisa i know who calls herself nisa. i thought you were her before i clicked on ur link. nayway yea i do discuss the math here with my friends but that only worked for the weekly assignemnts. for the extra credit, NO ONE knows how to answer them because they’re higher level math
ida : sigh at this rate i’m prolly not goinna be graduating too
tzeching : yes! you and songie pongie
ven : so i am learning :\
l.vo : really?!?! wtf alvo! help me do number 5 plsplsplpslsplspls. ya okay facebook you soon. im never on msn anymore but i dont think i’ve seen you online either. what la of course i remember you! what a thing to say!
59. themilkyland.blogspot | December 5th, 2008 at 10:55 pm

60. WP | December 6th, 2008 at 11:14 am

The sweet potatoes look good! I wanna try too…how is it done?
61. ashleighhhh | December 6th, 2008 at 11:36 am

62. justin | December 6th, 2008 at 11:53 am

Hello suann. I currently live in London, and have been to most of the places you are thinking of visiting. My thoughts:
Notts has what is supposed to be the oldest pub in the world (and a castle), but i found it a little quiet – though if you are visiting friends you’ll have fun regardless. Cambridge is gorgeous (especially the Backs, but it might be a lil dreary when you head down in winter). The Northern towns might be a little cold wet and rainy, I’d much prefer heading over to the continent instead, or even up to Edinburgh by train.
I just came back from 4 days in Krakow, so if you need travel tips etc drop me an email. Its a lovely little city, but i preferred Budapest which had more renaissance architecture.
Paris is always gorgeous in whatever weather, Barcelona an absolute riot. I’m not sure if you’ve been to Rome – that might also be a good place to check out for 2 or 3 days if you are thinking of options.
I have writeups of these cities on my travelblog, let me know if you’re interested in the link.
P.x
