ADV: My Lurve Affair With Malaysian Food

July 9th, 2009

i lost a lot of weight while i was away at college in the US. you all know what they say about the Freshman 15 -– people usually put on 15 pounds in their first year at college –- but it was more like the Freshman –10 for me. i actually did do the whole late night pizza thing like a normal college kid, plus there’s a diner in the basement of our dorm that sells the yummiest sinful food, but because i often pull long nights in the library, i tend to forget to eat. this can go on for days sometimes, and so i lost a lot of weight over the academic year from my ultra malnourished diet.

but now that i am back in Malaysia, i’ve gained all that weight back. all 10 pounds of it. and then some. MALAYSIAN FOOD IS SO EVILLY GLORIOUS :(((

growing waistline and hips aside, i’ve been enjoying the blissful gluttony of being back home. my first meal when i came back for the summer was my favorite beef noodles! then banana leaf rice at Nirwana for dinner. and of course, bak kut teh the next day, which drove me insane with delight.

this post is actually written in conjunction with the latest contest by Lurve Multigrain Chips called the What’s Your Lurve Affair? contest, where one stands to win a Macbook Pro (don’t fight with me for this pls!!) by blogging about their Lurve Affair with anything at all. The top 3 winners also get to go on the 8TV Quickie show.

to join the contest, you have to blog about your Lurve Affair and creatively integrate the Lurve multigrain snack into the post as well. do email your details to lurveaffair@nuffnang.com as per the microsite, and remember to read and agree to the terms & condition before participating. the contest period is from 23rd June to 12th July 2009.

i DO want that macbook pro, so here’s my Lurve Affair post. books, costumes and flea markets were very strong contenders, but my Lurve Affair is with none other than Malaysian food :)

i have plenty of pictures from my homecoming food spree at my regular haunts, so i thought i’d share some of my absolute favorites:

Hokkien mee! this is without a doubt the one local delectable i’ve missed most, since none of the Malaysian restaurants in New York can even come close to recreating it. i’ve been craving Hokkien mee almost every day since i’ve been home, and have to eat some about twice a week or i get grumpy. Hokkien mee in the photo is from Ahwa in Jalan 222 in Paramount Garden, but that’s not my favorite place. if you can guess my favorite, i will give you one buck. Naeboo cannot play!

Char Siew Pau. this is the normal char siew pau from Chuai Heng, the dim sum place on Jalan Imbi, but the best thing there is their char siew polo pau. that stuff is simply heavenly — juicy, tender meat encased in a soft, slightly crispy bun mmmm.

Prawn mee from Little Penang, KLCC & Mid Valley. no, i don’t care what you say, this is my favorite prawn mee in the world and nothing is going to change that. not even the real penang. yes yes i know about Pulau Tikus but not even that!!!

Banana leaf rice at Nirwana. tambah the crispy bittergourd stuff, of course :) my favorite add-on dish from Nirwana is the ayam kicap, though Timtam is a big fan of the sotong.

Beef noodles at Yang Mooi in Pandan Indah. apologies for the lousy focus of the photo, but i was rushing to attack the noodles! they’re soooo good and so much heartier than the famous place at Tengkat Tong Shin near Changkat BB. trust me.

Cendol straight from the truck, slurped down with a plate of spicy crunchy Indian rojak while sitting by the street. sigh, a Malaysian institution, that. this cendol is from the popular truck in SS15 Subang.

haha i recently announced my love for Domino’s Banana Kaya Dessert on my Twitter and a couple of people expressed disgust. what are you guys talking about!! the banana kaya dessert is AWESOME.

Kaya toast, best paired with soft boiled eggs and a cup of coffee. bliss bliss bliss at 7 in the grumpy morning.

Pisang goreng. My absolute favorite is the one outside the Weng Hing coffeeshop on Jalan Imbi. the one from the little row of stalls in Sea Park is similarly good.

this is something i haven’t had since i came back – bak kwa and pork floss on a lightly buttered toasted bun. what a comforting combination of textures and flavors :) this one is from the long gone New Seaview in Subang SS15. not sure where there any more good bak kwa buns besides Seaview and the stall in Taman Segar -– most people just cant get the bak kwa right.

and finally, the notorious chili pan mee at Kin Kin near Jalan TAR or at Pandan Indah. as with hokkien mee, the week feels incomplete without a hot sweaty lunch of chili pan mee at either branch. when I was still in NY, i used to boil with such jealousy when folks like Yat announced on Plurk that they would be going to Kin Kin for lunch :( well, jealousy no more! chili pan mee, i has it. you know i really like it when i start making stupid lolcats references.

so it’s been a lot of eating for me since i came back. most days i schedule two dinners and two lunches just to squeeze in all the people i have to meet up with, together with all the food i’ve yet to have :P four birds in one stone! but the waistline has been complaining, and so does the scale every time i step on it. like today, i had an artery-clogging bak kut teh lunch with my colleagues… :(

luckily for me, the product of this contest that has to be somehow integrated into your blog post for the ‘What’s Your Lurve Affair?’ contest, is going to help me solve that problem!

Lurve is a multigrain snack that’s both yummy and healthy, which means Lurve should probably be replacing my super unhealthy diet for a while. it’s healthy because it has no artificial colouring, no added preservatives and is trans fat-free. i’ve got about 6 packs of Lurve sitting in my house from an overzealous run to the nearest 7-11. starting tomorrow i’m going to take one pack each day to the office for lunch in a bid to get back my pre-summer figure :(

so, had a Lurve Affair lately? :)

(also, do feel free to tell me if you think there are better places to eat any of the local food i mentioned above. i’m always game for jaunts to new places, and more so now because i’m in the midst of compiling a Best of Malaysian Food list. well, Klang Valley really, but you know what i mean. i dont believe that anyone goes to the place i go to for hokkien mee…!)

How come your hokkien mee is black?

  • 7. nyrac  |  July 10th, 2009 at 12:52 am

hokkien mee has always been black. at least, the KL area ones. to penangites their hokkien mee is our prawn mee. and how could you have not mentioned char kuay teow :(

  • 8. Hillary  |  July 10th, 2009 at 12:58 am

  • 9. fern  |  July 10th, 2009 at 1:42 am

mr cendol! is quite charming when you wish him “vannakam” and “nandree” hehe

i live within walking distance to ss15. you can find a bak kwa and pork floss on a lightly buttered toasted bun at the foh foh hawker place. that’s right behind taylor’s business school/subang square.

but i personally recommend the guo ti (fried dumplings!) or nasi lemak melaka from foh foh. the char kuey teow is also decent (says me the penang hometown girl) if you have a craving for that too. yum yum!

also, malacca’s cendol is so muchy betta! authentic! yum yum

  • 20. lishun  |  July 10th, 2009 at 10:11 am

lurve multigrain chips are awesome! they were handing out free samples at the actors’ studio farewell and i regretted not grabbing more before i left. sigh.

anyway, best cendol in my books is still the one in jonker street in melaka. a piece of heaven for only rm1.70! the laksa there isn’t bad either. curry mee at ho weng kee ss2 is fabulous. when i was with health equity initiatives in brickfields earlier this year, i couldn’t get enough of the pisang goreng and fried nien gao near ymca. hello, beef noodles in seremban! come and visittttttt! faster learn to drive laaaaaa!!!!!

  • 21. Ken  |  July 10th, 2009 at 12:15 pm

I just had my delicious brunch , but seeing the pics and description … making me feeling hungry again !! :D

  • 22. steph  |  July 10th, 2009 at 12:31 pm

    mmm chilli pan mee!

    adding to your list:

1 – segambut seafood curry laksa, at yu ai, jln segambut utara.. there is an outlet in ss2 but not as good. i think part of the charm is sitting under the trees outside behind the original shop for sunday brunch.

2 – sentul seafood – this one u will hv to ask julz because he’s been there a few times with us, i don’t actually remember where it is because nik has always been the navigator! amazing place, i sometimes wish i was back in kl because of the pork knuckles.

    anyway i googled it: http://twurl.nl/sa7q0u

the first four pics are what we usually order!

  • 23. olivia  |  July 10th, 2009 at 1:25 pm

did you know that the pisang goreng man outside weng hing in imbi is no longer there! (unless he came back since the last time i was there which is…. not too long ago haha.) and we have no idea where he moved to :(
oh and i like the hokkien mee from this place in loke yew but sadly, i can’t remember the name of the place right now. haha!

  • 24. Jul  |  July 10th, 2009 at 2:03 pm

at changkat tung shin, there’s a herbal soup resto in an alley, cant remember the name but it was quite well know. love the place. it’s near jalan alor.

  • 26. hw  |  July 10th, 2009 at 2:10 pm

    nuuuuu another fuud post *drools*

Little Penang’s food is generally good, but if you ask me, the prawn mee at Restaurant Kam Heong in PJ Old Town tastes much better, although they dont have the big prawns and use the smaller ones.

Nirwana is no doubt the best banana leaf rice place, although nowadays the waiters really kiam siap.. have to ask them to tambah the fried bitter gourd many times cause they give so little each time. ><

For goreng pisang and fried nian gau, try the one in Brickfields next to YMCA right at the corner of the T junction. They have the sweetest bananas and crispiest. Next best one I think would the the stall in SS2 though I can’t exactly remember where in SS2 it is but it’s pretty popular and sells other fried stuff as well.

If you love rojak mamak, there’s a famous roadside stall in section 17 PJ that’s off Jln University and across the road from the wet market. There’s also a cendol stall next to it that’s decent as well but not the best. Best cendol is in Melaka unfortunately… but not the commercialized ones… those small and old stalls that dont have a name but have serve delicious cendol.

And wheres Nasi Lemak Famous?? :P

  • 27. bubbles  |  July 10th, 2009 at 2:37 pm

  • 29. formerly from ssg  |  July 10th, 2009 at 4:16 pm

ps and my family s a big fan of kin kin chilli pan mee as well !! haha aisay, good taste la pinkpau :P i lovee mashing the just-cooked egg and noodles together with my chopsticks before spooning unhealthy amounts of chilli on top of everything :D

  • 30. fatcat  |  July 10th, 2009 at 5:23 pm

I’ve never eaten any of those except for the pau and goreng pisang! D:

  • 31. Michelle  |  July 10th, 2009 at 5:24 pm

The best rojak goes to the old uncle that speaks english, bm, hakka, hokkien and canto at taman connaught pasar malam.

You ask him to give extra mangoes, he will give you wan.

  • 32. Shiau Lee  |  July 10th, 2009 at 7:06 pm

Fatty Duck Rice…… in SS2…. or the State PJ also…

  • 34. CraSH  |  July 10th, 2009 at 9:51 pm

hey!! there is a malaysian restaurant in flushing that has great hokkien mee too… anyway, your pics are making me drool here…

anyway, i guess you must have went to a small lorong in chow kit for your hokkien mee… i am not sure the ah pek is still there, but it was awesome coz he uses coal to fry the noodles…

  • 35. Cheryl  |  July 10th, 2009 at 10:01 pm

OMG, shouldn’t have checked out your latest post. Purposely wanting to make the Malaysians that are craving and starving for Malaysian food in US to dieeeee? hahah..just joking.

Ta pau Penang asam laksa please XD

    SATAY KAJANG!

  • 37. sheon  |  July 11th, 2009 at 1:10 am

    1. hokkien mee looks extremely lard-oily!!! must be hellava delicious!!
    2. i aint gonna debate with you on the best prawn mee, but my favorite is actually from bukit mertajam, penang. with extra fried onions, extra kangkong, and extra sambal!!!!
    3. banana leaf rice, i still havent found a place that has the best in everything…hahaha…..its always shop A’s mutton, shop B’s sotong, shop C’s fish…… sigh…..
    4. i LOVE beef noodles, my usual joint is the changkat BB one, i’d try yours soon enough!! thanks!!!
    5. i’ve never had chilli pan mee!!! dang!!! but my favorite pan-mee is my mom’s, and also a secluded stall very very deep inside kajang old town.

you look different in the last pic………in a good way, but still different.

  • 38. cheryl  |  July 11th, 2009 at 3:17 am

pinkpau, i saw on tv about this hokkien mee place in petaling street thought i can’t exactly tell you the location. somewhere in petaling street lah, i think it’s a corner shop and has long operating hours.
i craved for hokkien mee all the time too. but so far i could only figure out 1 shop in malacca that prepares hokkien mee the way it should be prepared. you know the anger everytime you order hokkien mee and all you get is the ordinary yellow mee in return? ish geram betul.

  • 39. stephen  |  July 11th, 2009 at 1:14 pm

sadly you’re not going to win this time around. it is not creative at all, people must have done this omg-best-food-where-to-eat compilation for over 9000 times.

i repeat, the content is NOT creative at all. is your brain out of creativity juice? perhaps you’ve been busy with work but you shouldn’t slack if you really want to win.

it has nothing related or connected to healthy snacking. all i see are sinful foods. but i personally condone this. but that’s out of the point. sixthseal might be able to nail it though.

  • 40. Zeek  |  July 11th, 2009 at 6:59 pm

as “kiasu”, egoistic and proud to be a Penangite myself, there is no way Prawn Mee in those crappy restaurant in Mid Valley or KLCC can beat the original one. Pau you come penang, i bring you to the best one. hahahaha…

The closest most delicious one in PJ is at Damansara Kim. That one i had every week. haha…

  • 41. cindy khor  |  July 11th, 2009 at 8:13 pm

T__T, now you make me miss malaysia even more… there’s absolutely no malaysian food here in northern ireland and the only option is that i have to take a plane to scotland to have a taste of home at a malaysian restaurant there…

chilli pan mee, prawn noodles, nasi lemak, kangkung belacan…

  • 42. fishnet  |  July 11th, 2009 at 8:32 pm

pinkpau… please blog about the decision to revert the teaching of math and science to malay. T-T your opinions would be pretty valuable and probably a lot more interesting than the rubbish that’s published in the papers nowadays.

  • 43. msihua  |  July 11th, 2009 at 8:32 pm

OMG.. is it possible to just die from food jealousy?!!!

I WANT TO GO HOMEEEEE AND EAT TOO!!!!

  • 46. :)  |  July 12th, 2009 at 2:45 am

The Sentul Ah Yap’s hokkien mee is not good. Too much sauce which splats everywhere & get icky (urghh.. :S) Trust me, hokkien mee in uptown is lousy despite lots of people saying it’s good. (even the other shop, D.U. hokkien mee)

Rojak.. uptown, weekends (afternoon), uncle with a motorcycle stall. He’s not always there though. I’ve been eating this uncle’s rojak since like.. forever? Yau zha guai sold nearby too.

I like the tom yam pan mee in section 17, corner shop in front of the night stalls. The other corner shop next to it called jackson has quite good hokkien mee and errr… “sang ha meen” i dunno what it’s called in eng, it’s something like prawn yee mee. (huge prawns.. :D)

Penang curry laksa in Kota Damansara’s D.U. coffeeshop is awesome.

Fish head noodles in Brickfields, corner coffeeshop opposite YMCA.. the best. The aunty’s yong tau fu clear soup noodles and curry laksa is good too. The fried kuey teow there was the best in KL till the aunty went MIA (if anyone knows where on earth is she, pls tell me.. i’ve been eating it since i was small and I can’t find the same taste anymore. :( Tried so many others, disappointed everytime.)

Cendol & rojak van by the road (after section 17.. the very hill-y up and down road which leads u to the chinese newspaper factory thingy)

Can see that I love food huh? The list goes on and on and on………………………

  • 47. Michelle  |  July 12th, 2009 at 10:00 am

I found a new laksa place at Imbi market! It’s so good, the laksa there. :) The store is fairly new and its located near the last fruit stall down at the end of the market.

I wonder if i got my prepositions right.

  • 48. jiayoong  |  July 12th, 2009 at 7:26 pm

hillary : hehe i had a pic of that. was going to use it but decided against.

fern : thats where i took that picture of the bak kwa bun!!! glad to see he’s still around even though seaview changed owners.

kevin chan : i know right :( how?

michelle : hehe show only lah. hokkien mee is happy food.

ee vonn : i hope you’re coming back for good and not just a short break.. :( my summer’s feeling a little too brief.

    ping : nope and nope!

ky : but it’s a restaurant wor… i find it hard to get over the skepticism. must try one day!

annant : melaka’s one is a lot neater. the ones in KL and penang are just plain sloppy. but sloppy goodness!

li shun : is that the one in the aviation museum or something? the one with durian cendol? yaaaa that brickfields nian gao stall has been on my to-try FOREVER. let’s go one dayyyyy. haha i will never drive unfortuantely :(

    ken : yay :)

steph : someone just told me about that place in segambut! is it the store tht sells some tom yam prawn noodle kinda thing? haha okay will make julian go with me to sentul. but prolly not anytime soon — did you hear that he’s down with dengue? :(

olivia : there’s a place in sea park that sells pisang goreng and nian gao exactly like the ones outside weng hing! so fret not :) loke yew.. hmm.. behind a corner coffee shop near some big disco nightclub?

jul : is this place near the beef noodles?

    carol : COME BACKKK

hw : haha ya the dudes at nirwana purposely give small helpings when you say tambah. and yes i’ve heard so much about this brickfields pisang goreng. i MUST GO. and yes i know that rojak — good stuff :) and do you mean nasi lemak famous in bangsar? nice meh…………..

    bubbles : agreed :(

formerly from ssg : HEY! long time no see :) hehe dont forget to squeeze in a bit of lime in ur pan mee next time!! makes a huge difference.

    fatcat : COME TO KL

michelle : haha connaught pasar malam! have u had the chau tau fu?

shiau lee : hmm! i’ve only been to the one in pj state, but will definitely check out this ss2 one soon! thanks for the heads up :)

claudia : what kind of crab first!

crash : yes so i keep hearing.. but i havent quite found it! and you’re wrong abt the little lorong! though most of the good places use charcoal :)

cheryl : why didnt you come back for summer? :(

    maggi : YAAA

sheon : where is this bukit mertajam prawn mee!!! and omg you must have chili pan meeeee. come to kl i take u. haha ya i was crying buckets the night before i took that pic, hence the weirdly swollen eyes

cheryl : yes that place is pretty fehmes… it’s outside hong leong bank on petaling street itself. quite good! :)

stephen : joining a discerning commenter of the year competition or something? :) but thank you for the comments; i’ll remember to take it into account when i have the time

zeek : little penang prawn mee is damn nice laaa :(

    cindy khor : sorry :(((

fishnet : when i have time i will. i have a lot of thoughts to pen down on that topic.. i feel kinda frustrated that i cant

msihua : come back home then!

artificially : eh u got gtalk me meh. when

terence : according to stephen up there, i’m too uncreative to win. so oh well! :)

:) : WOW. that is an AWESOME list. the first place i’m going to check out is the sang har meen and fish head noodles!!! have you been to greenview in ss2 for the sang har meen though? that stuff is GOOD.

michelle : popiah in imbi market is good :)

    jiayoong : /pumps fist!

  • 50. steph  |  July 13th, 2009 at 8:51 am

mmm yes. but if you go there for tom yam instead of curry you might make me cry :(

also.. a long time kl classic: soo kee in imbi for probably the only sang har mee in kl worth driving out for. it’s a kl institution, just like the cancerous char siew near jalan alor..
