Beneath The Perfunctory, There Is A Well

July 22nd, 2009

O.S.I.Wednesday!

surely there is more to life than…?

my answer: getting caught in the race for bigger and better. we should once in a while revel in the small and seemingly meager.

going for a much-needed movie tonight, providing we dont get caught in traffic. that’s my small joy of the day. and i’m very happy that i’ve decided on my plan of action for the next few years. it’s feasible, something i both want and need, and bound to be an abundant source of activity, engagement and thrills.

I couldn’t agree more with you, Pinkpau. Bigger and better is many times our exuse to have a goal that we many times know we won’t achieve, but we push ourselves forward, because we are scared to face our insecurities in life. Beauty is in small things.

MKL : but what if we achieve those goals? and you’re supposed to share what your “surely there is more to life than…” :)

surely there is more to life than – looking forward to daily hugs by my sweet owner pinkpau who seems to have grown up lately and looking to the simple joys in life. haha :P
there is definitely more to life than work and paying the bills and the unnecessary pursuit of “wants” and not settling for just the basic needs. It’s just so hard to not get caught up in the rat race…

surely there is more to life than constantly having to watch what you eat!
God I’m getting pudgier but fuck it I don’t care I’m still gonna eat whatever I want wtf *denial+giving up hope+acceptance*

This has got to me the most oft-quoted phrase, but surely there is more to life than money?
I’m 18, and money does not interest or motivates me any more. I have no idea if it’s a good thing or a bad thing.
I’ve just seen too many people sacrificing their happiness chasing money. That doesn’t seem like the kind of happiness I want to wrap myself in. Thinking about living like that is depressing.
But thank God life interests me =]

Haha… i guess I replied to your ’sure there is more to life than’. As for those who achieve all their goals, they usually never can’t stand still and find new challenges and everything starts over.

‘Surely there is more to life than’ money. If you think money, wealth and brands will somehow make you a person, you are dead wrong. Sure, people can think “wow, he is rich, he must be successful”. You’ll get more attention, but if you are shallow, if you have nothing to show beyond your looks, you will be a nobody. That’s why money is good until you know what is it good for: To make your life more comfortable. But it doesn’t make you a better human, if you have more money than someone else.

    Pinkpau, agree?

surely there’s more to life than:

    … oh i don’t know, hedonism?!

but of course it also depends on what constitutes ‘pleasure’ for the subject. if, for example, a subject sees helping people and serving others as his/her pleasure, then i guess it’s great. but for most people, it usually has to do with satisfying a certain desire/want in themselves (’it’ being ‘the pursuit of pleasure’).

and desire, as we all know it, is never ending. we mortals constantly crave and lust, for things that we don’t have. someday we’re all gonna set ourselves ablaze because we’re too consumed in our own desires. :P

surely there is more to life than…?

my answer: dreading over job, salary and politics :-p (and i can think so much more! hahaha)

  • 15. grumpy  |  July 23rd, 2009 at 10:33 am

surely there is more to life than having to prove yourself ?
we constantly try to prove (to others and to ourselves) that we are smart / kind / cool / have a big heart etc, that we have a good career / earn big bucks / happy family / smart kids etc
sometimes, we should just refocus on the priority rather than the end, it’s also the journey not just the destination.

than getting caught in the (corporate or otherwise) rat race amidst dreams of retiring at 35 =_____=

if it’s a job i love, i will do it till the day i die.

  • 17. fatcat  |  July 23rd, 2009 at 5:22 pm

Surely there is more to life than impatiently waiting for calls and letters! Su ann, I’m going mad from waiting for the results of my interview! D:

  • 18. joiz3  |  July 23rd, 2009 at 6:17 pm

grumpy, i totally agree with you.

surely there is more to life than achievements. any sort – academic, financial, career etc. these amount to nothing at all in the end if we fail to achieve genuine relationships.

  • 19. jeeng  |  July 23rd, 2009 at 11:02 pm

    Petty emotions ;)

Le sigh. On the eve of my 20th, I can only wish I can ‘look at the bigger picture’ more often, but, of course, not at the expense of personal happiness.

I’m presuming the internship has helped with your ‘action plan’? Congrats :)

Carol you wise woman, you took the words right out of my mouth. Dreams of retiring at 35 indeed. I used to want to retire by 30, but last summer realised that like my Dad, if its something I love, I’d do it to the day I die.

  • 25. joiz3  |  July 24th, 2009 at 3:56 pm

oohhh a friend of mine gave me an epic answer – surely there is more to life than just living.

ironic, but when you think abt it, it makes sense.

  • 26. Michelle  |  July 24th, 2009 at 10:37 pm

…to pour over lecture notes and try to devote every second of your life to those textbooks that you’re not going to use at the end of the semester.
