St Valentine Needs To Eat Too, Part 2

so here’s my next 5 best restaurants in KL to have a Valentine’s Day dinner.

for part 1, click here!

1. Rahsia

true to its name, it can be hard to miss this beauty of a restaurant when you’re driving down the quiet suburban street that effortlessly camouflages it amongst embassies and residential bungalows. but get down from your car and peek past the shrubbery-clad fences, and you will find Rahsia, its shady trees and path of pebbles welcoming the curious diner in.

Rahsia offers three dining areas. the first and my favourite is the terrace, where the weaved basket lights overhead throw swirls of intricate shadows all over the ceilings, creating a gossamer underwater feel. candlelight, cotton tablecloths and rattan chairs turn the terrace into a very relaxed and complacent area, almost beachlike in its casualness.

step inside the bungalow and it’s a whole different setting - all crisp and suave with its white tablecloths and white-clothed chairs. here, soft lighting and delicate wineglasses offset the white walls and smooth carpetless floor. slow jazz music is piped throughout the room. overall, very run-of-the-mill but still tasteful. and beyond a set of wooden doors, the third area is a tiny intimate patio with only three tables, perfect for customers who are big on privacy.

the fare here is Nusantara cuisine - Malay, Indonesian and a little bit of Nyonya. i’m not too keen on their appetizers like the satay and spring rolls etc, you’ll find them all just a tad too oily, but their salads are amazing. my fav is without a question the soft shell crab salad with pesto cream dressing! as for their mains, i’d think that the Balinese Suite and Chicken Kashnas are the best. would totally not recommend the Ning Noodles. the more worthwhile desserts are the bread and butter pudding and the brownie. check out their website for more menu details and pricing.

service here takes its time, good if you wanna linger over your courses with a loved one. all staff are polite and give you your space, but always attentive.

for Vday, Rahsia is having a 4-course dinner menu at RM120++ per pax. click here for the full Valentines Day menu.

2. Hajime

let us welcome with open arms the latest Japanese restaurant in town, Hajime! looking at Hajime, it’s hard to tell its a restaurant, because it looks exactly like a residential bungalow from the outside. so thank goodness for its quirky pufferfish signboard which immediately catches the eye as you drive past. and it’s not just for show either - Hajime is one of the few Jap places in KL that serves fugu.

i discovered this place by accident while i was on my way to Basil Leaf (which i shall forever boycott), and boy am i glad i did. nicely done up in concrete walls, slate tile floor and floor lighting, the whole place feels very contemporary and sophisticated. yet the ‘tatami’ seating area, featuring a polished wood floor and red cushions, retains a little bit of traditional Japenese essence for the restaurant.

patrons can also choose to sit at the sushi bar, where it is livelier. not only are the young men who work behind the bar chatty and friendly, they are also clearly trained well! i asked one of them about fugu, and his knowledge on the subject was most impressive. and another guy, i was told, is the one responsible for making the delightful sesame and azuki ice cream i thoroughly enjoyed.

service is absolutely fantastic, and that is surprising since Hajime has only been open about 2 weeks. the waiting staff are so warm and polite, AND they give good menu recommendations. i am a complete sucker for waiters who know what they’re talking about :D

food here is gooooooood. there is a noodle dish called the Inaniwa Udon, and i first tried it in hongkong. i dont think there this is a place in KL that serves this (though i could be wrong, do inform if there is any jap rest in KL that does!), so you can imagine my excitement when i saw it on the menu! you MUST have this noodle served cold - they serve the udon noodles (really kway teow) on a plate of ice, and you are given a soy sauce which you mix with finely-diced ginger and shallots and wasabi. you mix all those together, then you dip your noodles in it, and you eat. absolute heaven in your mouth :)

the last time i checked, Hajime’s chef hasnt decided on the Valentine’s Day menu, but i was told it will not exceed RM80++ per pax, and will come degustation-style with 9 small courses instead of a few big ones. i urged them to include the Inaniwa Udon, haha i hope they heed. if they dont, order it anyway!!!

Hajime
(i heartilly apologise, but i no longer have their address coz i gave away all the business cards i took when i was there :( but i do know it’s on Jalan Damai, just opposite Basil Leaf and Soiree)

3. Nero Vivo

i blogged about Nero Vivo once over here, so i will cut this one short. Nero Vivo is a swanky Italian place in Ceylon Hill that is classy without being stifling, lively without being bustling. for some reason, the people who come here are really full of life - they talk loud, they laugh, they chatter away. i dont really like restaurants where everyone sits all prim and proper and are afraid to raise their voices above a whisper .. and that’s why i love Nero Vivo. easily one of the best Italian restaurants in KL - it’s right up there with Ciao. and the food here is great :)

Nero Vivo has apparently not decided on their Valentines Day menu, but it will fall between the range of RM120-150++ per pax.

4. The Ivy

because it is smack in the middle of popular party district Asian Heritage Row, people tend to think The Ivy is just another bar, just another English pub. but ah! look past the black doors and the little 18th century English lanterns, steer away from the men watching footie at the bar or having a smoke on the couch, walk up the carpeted stairs, and you will find yourself in a nice and spiffy restaurant the downstairs pub was merely a veneer for.

candelabras, pastel-coloured paintings and heavy floral-printed carpets are The Ivy’s decor. nothing that screams i’m-trying-too-hard-to-be-English! but not exactly the most impressive. they could do a lot more with the interior, i think. the upstairs dining area just feels like it lacks a little soul.

food is good but not great, i hate to say it but The Smokehouse makes better yorkshire pudding. the roast beef and fish and chips in The Ivy are pretty good, though! but it’s the dessert that’s ace, wicked, bazzing, brill - as the English would say. i am in love with the double dark brownie, the bread and butter pudding (hello, Baileys sauce!) and the chocolate mud cake. soooo yummy i could die.

The Ivy’s Valentine’s Day menu is a 4 course affair, and diners are given a choice of 3 mains to choose from, as well as a complimentary glass of bubbly. and it all goes for the totally ace price of RM188 per couple! wicked! just a little over RM90 per pax. email me for the menu if you wanna take a look at it.

5. La Risata

for a restaurant that touts itself as ‘the best trattoria outside of Italy’, La Risata has a lot to put out to live up to their claim. i dont know if it’s really the best trattoria outside of Italy, but i would say it’s one of the better ones in KL. i’ve been going to La Risata ever since i was little, and i’ve never stopped loving it.

refurbished a while ago, La Risata now sports a cheerful interior with bright red walls and quirky paintings. very apt indeed, for a restaurant with a plump red tomato for its brand logo, and a name that means ‘The Laughter’! the overall feel of La Risata is more casual than most Italian restaurants (hence the term trattoria), and leans towards the family restaurant type, though groups of young beautiful people coming here to enjoy a good glass of wine are not uncommon.

many people say that La Risata offers some of the best and most authentic pizzas and pastas in KL, and i dont disagree :) i love the food here, especially the pastas and their 4-cheese soup. their ravioli is utterly amazing, and so is their squid ink fettucine though i must say their house specialty marinara is a tad overrated. their Pizza Carbonara is worth a try as well! for dessert, it’s the flourless chocolate cake hands down.

service here is wonderful. they are so attentive and efficient. most of the staff here have been with La Risata for a long time, so they know their menu inside out, which is a good thing when you want a good and honest recommendation. i recently had a dinner party there for 28 people, and they handled us with the utmost care and hospitality. they have my respect- i dont think we were an easy bunch to deal with that night, haha.

for Vday, La Risata has a 4-course menu with a choice of red meat or fish for mains. going at RM80++ per pax. i have the menu, so do email me if you wish to take a peek.

St Valentine Needs To Eat Too

edit: Part 2 is over here!

last year i did a vday post on 12 different gifts guys could get their girls. this year, jonathan suggested that i do a compilation of the best and most romantic restaurants in kl to have a valentine’s day dinner. good idea, right?! soooo, here it is! in my humble opinion, 5 of the Best Valentine’s Day Restaurants in KL!

1. Ciao

the ambience of Ciao is so quietly sophisticated and demure, that once you’re inside, you wouldnt be able to tell that it’s situated right in the middle of the booming and bustling Jalan Tun Razak. a bungalow-cum-restaurant, Ciao is spacious without being bare, cozy without being crowded.

there are two parts to the restaurant, the first is the inside of the bungalow where everything is done up in hues of white, off-white and warm sandy colours. decor is minimal with only a few Renaissance-type artpieces adorning the walls, and some very tasteful lighting. the general feel here is neat and crisp.

the second part of the restaurant is the patio and garden area, where the chairs and floors are wooden. at night this area is lit with dim lights and candles, very pretty :) there’s a gorgeous stone fountain in the middle of the garden that lends tremendously to the romance of the whole place. Ciao is pretty famous for it’s exquisite garden weddings!

i love the food in Ciao and always have. the quality of the food there has never wavered. all their pastas are good - i generally prefer their pastas to their pizzas or meat dishes. the cream marinara, squid ink, pumpkin ravioli and pesto there is top notch. also, anything that comes with their capers garlic dip is worth ordering, because that dip is SO YUMMY. and the seafood soup is superb!!! correct or not, azlan! as for dessert, i would not recommend their Cassata cake, but their tiramisu is goooooood. go for their Tartuffo if you like ice cream.

for Valentines Day, Ciao is doing away with their usual fare. they are serving only their Valentine’s Day Menu, which goes for RM180 per pax. email me if you’d like to have a peek at their vday menu! :)

Ciao also has two sister restaurants - Ciccio in Changkat Bukit Bintang and Cipolla in Bangsar. if you prefer a more casual cafe-type environ but with Ciao’s menu, then those two are the places to head to.

2. Moussandra

nestled in a dark little corridor on the ground floor of KL Plaza is Moussandra, a snug and candlelit Mediterranean eatery with the best tapas you will ever find in KL. of the 5 restaurants featured here in this post, Moussandra would be my top pick for a Valentine’s Day dinner, simply because the food is superb, the ambience is superb, and the service is superb. plus the tiramisu and chocolate cake here is fantastic. i really could not ask for more :D

the very first time i went to Moussandra, i completely fell in love with it. the interior of the place is so rustic and earthy, completely unlike all the other loud and flamboyant mediterranean restaurants in KL. with its rough stucco walls and simple wooden furniture, stepping into Moussandra is like entering a bona fide spanish kitchen. it is intimate in all its rawness.

and the decor items here are so confusedly haphazard, it’s almost endearing! a grecian urn here, a shelf full of empty wine bottles there, copper pans all over the walls, and there’s even a kettle hanging from the ceiling. the yellowed posters and still-life art hanging on the walls, in all their awkwardness, successfully blend into the surroundings to create this totally unembellished and provincial mood. it’s all so weird, i absolutely love it!

this is a small place, so service here is always attentive and warm. one time i went around taking photos of the restaurant, and after a while, the manager approached me worriedly and said that i should return to my seat and take pictures later. ‘the saganaki you ordered must not be eaten cold!!!’ he insisted. hahaha. soooo cute.

food here is THE best. the saganaki that must not be eaten cold is yummy, but i would put that aside for their tapas. i havent had the pleasure of sampling their entire tapas menu, but all the tapas i’ve ever had here have been scrumptious. the spanish rice dish, paella, is sooooo tasty here, it’s all i ever order when i go to Moussandra. and their herb-encrusted dory fillet is so lipsmackingly deliciously garlicky and melt-in-your-mouth, it’s hard to refuse it when it’s placed in front of you. as is their moussaka. sigh! and oh, their tiramisu!! i believe it’s safe to say that their tiramisu is one of the best in KL.

for Valentine’s Day, Moussandra has a set menu that goes for RM98 per pax. the prices of their ala carte menu can be found on their website.

3. Cafe Cafe

since i blogged about Cafe Cafe a while ago, i’m going to make this one short. in a nutshell, Cafe Cafe is a completely gorgeous French restaurant with the most beautiful and opulent and chic decor ever. this place is almost magical in its beauty, and it looks like a Victorian painting come alive. it’s a pretty crowded and lively restaurant, with lots of chatter and laughter amongst tinkling of cutlery. however, if you wanna pick this place for your Vday dinner, come here for the ambience, not the food. the food here isnt that great for the price you pay, about rm100-150 per head. besides their ala carte menu, there are also several different set menus here. a must have is their warm chocolate cake! :D

Cafe Cafe (map!)
175 Jalan Maharajalela
50150 KL
Tel : 03-2145 8141

4. Tamarind Hill

this gorgeous Thai restaurant is designed in a way that the entrance itself whets your appetite. from the moment you push past the wrought iron gates, you’re holding your breath in anticipation. shady trees sway quietly above the entrance into the restaurant, there are pebbles beneath your feet, and your view of what is to come is blocked out by tall white walls. calm sounds of rushing water and a symphony of crickets surround you, and candles illuminate your path. you climb a few steps, and here you are. the beautiful Tamarind Hill awaits :)

like Ciao, Tamarind Hill has the bungalow-cum-restaurant concept going on. you can choose to dine in the bungalow or on the patio, but i usually opt for the patio. the open wooden patio of Tamarind Hill is really the most alluring part of the place, with its rattan lamps hanging from the beams and simple woven tapestries on the walls. there are also flowy orange organza curtains all around that give the patio a nice splash of colour and vibrancy, nicely offsetting the browns and oranges of the table settings. it’s all very honest and natural with a touch of class.. very very pleasant.

the Tamarind Hill bungalow sports an unfinished, raw, colonial look with its white walls and dusty corners. it’s nice in all its art-gallery charm, but kinda makes me feel like i’m eating in a museum sometimes. haha. which is why i always pick the tables at the patio.

service here is neither bad nor good. the staff here arent particularly quick or good in conversation, but they’re polite and helpful. food is just alright, not the best Thai in KL, but good enough! they tend to go a bit overboard on the taste, though. totally for you if you like your food with a lot of kick in it. i recommend the fried fish with cashewnuts! and the huge giant prawns with tamarind sauce. and their spring rolls with this superb peanut butter dip! as for dessert, the dragonfruit with rum&raisin ice cream is the best.

price-wise, Tamarind Hill can be a little expensive but you can cut corners if you dont order their ridiculously expensive prawns and crabs. tentatively, for 2 people the bill should be about RM180-250. also, they’re not offering any Valentine’s set menus so if you choose to dine here, there’s only the ala carte menu. and if you prefer Indochinese cuisine and a slightly quieter but similar environ, check out their sister restaurant Tamarind Springs, which is not too bad either!

Tamarind Hill (map!)
1, Jalan Kerja Air Lama
68000 Ampang

5. Cava

Cava is my newfound love! it’s a small and cozy Mediterranean restaurant in the shoplots of Jalan Bangkung of Bangsar, just a few doors down from Attic and Opus.

the interior of Cava is classy and modern, with it’s smooth parquet floors, warm yellow walls and quirky paintings. one entire wall is covered with several shelves lined with empty wine bottles, and one section of the restaurant can be lent some privacy with the help of a plush red velvet curtain. Cava’s charm lies in its sleek and simple design. there’s something almost easygoing and relaxing about the place. it’s all so casual and laidback (yet maintaining a certain polished look), that you feel like you could sit there for hours just chatting or reading a good book.

major props to Cava for having the best service i’ve had the pleasure of encountering in a long time. i always thought the staff of Opus had hospitality down to a perfect science, so i wasnt very surprised when i was told that Opus and Cava are in fact sister restaurants. both places have the friendliest and warmest and most polite waiting staff you could ever hope to find in KL. or maybe even Malaysia. i totally love the fact that they are so open to people taking pictures of their restaurant and their food, i mean wtf is up with this no-photos policy that some establishments just love to have these days? a lot of places could learn a thing or two from Cava’s hospitality.

a must-try in Cava are their 4 specialty drinks. the Sangria here is bloody fantastic, but my favourite is the Cava #1, which is a deliciously tantalising mix of white wine, apple juice, lemon juice and whiskey. can we say YUM??? i hear the oxtail pasta and paella here are pretty good too, though i havent tried them for myself. but oh my god, have i tried their warm chocolate cake. oh my god oh my god oh my god. it is to die for, end of story. wine lovers, for its uber extensive range of wines, Cava is the place for you.

aside from their usual menu, Cava will be having a Valentine’s Day 5-course set menu for RM120 per pax. the prices of their ala carte menu is on their website.

Cafe Cafe

on new year’s eve, Martian wanted to take me out for dinner. it’s this nice French place at the Edinburgh roundabout, says he. there are NO restaurants there, French or otherwise!, says i. ahhh that’s what you think, smirks he.

okay, so there really was a restaurant there. hidden behind the bushes and nestled amongst humble coffeeshops on a five-foot-way creepy enough to make ladies wanna clutch their purses closer to them, is the french restaurant Cafe Cafe. and the first thing i said when i pushed open the creaky wooden doors and stepped into the place was, oh my god.

it is THE most beautiful restaurant i’ve ever seen in KL. you’d be hard pressed to find another place that’s more of a visual orgasm than Cafe Cafe. from that first step into the restaurant as the doors swing close behind you, it’s impossible not to be consumed by the splendor that is the interior of Cafe Cafe. the whole place is like a Victorian painting come alive!

dark velvet curtains cloak the huge glass windows of Cafe Cafe, coyly hiding its secrets from curious passerbys, but oozing romance inside. opulent chandeliers overlook the restaurant, and the floor is a sea of black-and-white squares, so simple and Parisian chic! and then there are the strings of crystals that hang from the ceiling, reflecting the flickering candlelight from the tables beneath, at which are seated happy, smiling people who are touching fingers across the table and talking softly to their partners.

even the sounds of Cafe Cafe are beautiful. in stark contrast to the busy KL roads outside, this little hideaway is a symphony of lover’s whispers, soft feminine laughter, tinkling of cutlery on elegant dinner plates and the clicketyclack of the waiters’ black polished shoes on the floor. the music is subtle and classy piano tunes, totally perfect ear food for the soul.

there’s just so much detail to the decor - berries and roses are the tables’ centerpieces, posters of the Moulin Rouge and old French movies line the walls, and the bartop is littered with antique lamps and tall vases of flowers. everything is just so plush and decadent and bohemian, you feel like you could sit there and sip wine forever. but perhaps the best part about Cafe Cafe is that despite all its splendor and allure, it’s not one of those pretentious establishments that make you feel oddly unbelonging. it’s cozy and charming enough to make you feel comfortable and like you’re right at home.

their food, although pretty good, is secondary to the sheer gorgeousness of the place. my truffle scented escargot and duck confit was really nothing to shout about (though i must say DONT order the duck confit, despite its Highly Recommended denotement), but Martian’s scallop starter and wagyu beek cheeks were damn good.

and their desserts! oh my god! we had the warm chocolate cake with ice cream, and this chocolate pie thing. both were sooooooooooooo indulgently good. i told a friend, who has been to Cafe Cafe prior, and he scolded me for not ordering the tiramisu :( could it really be that good? okay i’ll go try. like tomorrow. and i’ll tell y’all if it’s really that good.

oh and price-wise, rm100-120 therabouts per head should be just right.

Cafe Cafe is one of those restaurants to wine and dine your loved one. dont go there for the food, go there for the absolutely breathtaking ambience. i would totally recommend this place for Valentines Day.. which as we all know, is just around the corner :)

this is their website. clickety for more info (and the loveliest photographs of the place), and there’s a map to the place as well. i cant believe KL has been hiding this amazing resturant all this while.

Malaysia International Gourmet Festival - Marche

2nd MIGF do! this time we went to Med Marche at the Renaissance. i’ve heard many good things about Marche, plus their Festival menu looked very promising indeedy.

upon seating, we were presented with two glasses of cold sangria. truly mediterranean! the sangria was lurvely, with just the right ratio of fruit and red wine. yummy. i drained mine to the very last drop :D

this is the 1st starter, a seafood degustation called Around the Mediterranean Sea. clockwise from the top - Tuna Carpaccio which was alright. the Terrine of Scallops and Leek was the best on the plate. having the salmon roe explode in your mouth, along with the soft chewy texture of the scallop-cake … hello, heaven! next is the Blue Crab in Vine Leaf, which i thought was good too. the crabmeat and leaf is a genius pairing. the Clams and Preserved Lemon were just alright, with a nice zing courtesy of the ginger shreds, but i donno.. the clams coulda been a little fresher. the Salt Cod Stuffed Calamari with the lemon was very whatever.
